Hi all,

I'm gearing up to become ready for the current world in which we live.

What I'm wondering is how is everyone accessing their data on the move?

Given Apple's some what 'take it or leave it' approach, I assume most Linux users have stayed away from the i devices?

I personally are thinking of setting up a "one" account through Ubuntu, which can be accessed through a browser. That way, I can access it at home on my Linux box, I can access on the move through Android devices "eg phones or tablets" or even windows pcs. For music I would probably use a generic MP3 player rather than the ipod path.

Does this sound wise? Does anyone else have another method they are using?

I am most interesting in hearing how people are managing this.

Thanks

Hi I got my netbook root partition about to be full and I want to know how can I bootstrap it. I found out with filelight that I get a lot of size from the locales used. I dont have much need for these so I want to know how can I get rid of the locales cleanly. I am including snapshots from my disk.

I am including shots of /usr/share/ and /usr/share/locale from my disk.

Please advice how can I get rid of it, and which packages to remove.

Recently picked up an Itronix Gobook 3 (IX260+) rugged laptop off ebay.

Was considering getting a Netbook of some flavor, but realized that for my needs, something more or less indestructable could be handy,

and having a "normal" screen resolution and real HD/CD etc was a nice bonus.

In any case...

Basic specs:

12.1" screen

Pentium "M" 1.8GHz, "Dothan" 2MB cache

(now has) 2GB PC2700 (DDR) memory (max 2G)

40G HD (Rugged IBM laptop drive, in shock mount cage)

CD

1x USB2 (bootable)

FW400 (Probably bootable) has the mini connector

2x cardbus slots (external) 1 internal

1X miniPCI (the wireless card currently lives here)

Optional touchscreen (works great under XP)

Optional GPS (internal, lives on ttyS3 on mine)

Optional wireless a/b/g (Internal, Mine was Intel PRO 2200 b/g)

Optional cellular modem (Not on this one, would live under the CDROM, extra internal cardbus connector)

Optional Bluetooth (internal, mine not so equipped, would live next to the GPS card in the lid)

Rated for repeated 3' drops onto concrete, water spray from any angle, and many other creative forms of abuse.

Not only could you use it on the toilet, you could use it in the shower if so inclined...

It weighs nearly 9 pounds, due to it's mostly cast magnesium construction.

Do not drop test on your foot.

Install

(HD came wiped)

Put 2009.0 KDE international CD

Booted

Got to X and .. mouse moved spastically for awhile and machine quickly became unresponsive.

As this is not my first rodeo, power cycled, and added "3" to the kernel command line, brining it up WITHOUT X11,

also set fb to 1024x768 usung the F3 hotkey in the installer (f4 to get the kernel command line up.

allowed it to boot again...

Ran XFdrake from the console, and turned off 3D accell and HW mouse

(HW mouse later turned back on, 3D was the issue)

typed "telinit 5" and it came right up in all the glory KDE4 can manage, which is actually pretty decent.

Install from the live install ran fine, was able to configure the Intel B/G wireless either before or after install, (the settings get loaded into the fresh install) and the machine works VERY nicely, with only minor issues...

(The other (optional) wireless that might come with a gobook 3 would be an Atheros unit, which would also be handled out of the box)

1) The Semtech touchscreen is nonfunctional, supposedly the evtouch X11 driver can deal with this, haven't gotten that far yet.

There IS a Semtech kernel driver specifically for this laptop in the wild somewhere, but all the links are dead.

(It is actually worse than nonfunctional-- It you try to use it, (works with a stylus) the data IS getting to the mouse driver (psaux device), and it usually renders the kbd/synaptics mouse inop, causing a need to power cycle)

2) 3D still does not work.

Using "ati" driver, current fglrx versions do not handle this old ATI R250 card.

Annoyingly, I was playing with some xorg.conf files, got 3D working fine, managed to get fragged a few times playing Alien Arena 7.20 on low settings at a reasonable framerate (a REAL mouse is required for FPS use)...

...Saved the "working" xorg.conf, and powered off for the night... Wouldn't work again this morning using that xorg.conf.

The issue is loading "dri" --- causes the same symptoms seen initially, X11 slows to a crawl with a jerky mouse and eventually hangs completely.

EDIT--- 2007.1 and 2008.0 ONE works flawlessly as far as 3D accel goes, using the old fglrx driver of the day.

Sadly fglrx no longer supports the R250, and the ati driver seems to have some issues...

2008.0 is going on... The amusing thing is not only is it sucessfully using the "ati" driver (with working 3D) but evdev loaded as it "found" the touchscreen...

I'm interested in getting a little netbook to while away the commuting time, and I'm surprised how cheap the current offers are. In particular, there's one by Acer which seems to fit quite well. I'm well aware though that it's no supercomputer, so I'd like an idea of what it's realistic to be able to do on it.

Here are the listed specs:

CPU - Intel Atom N455, 1.66 GHz (I guess this means single core)

1 GB DDR3-RAM

250 GB HDD

Graphics - Intel GMA 3150

10.1" screen, 1024 x 600

So it's a low power CPU with only 1GB RAM and sub-stellar graphics - it's a netbook of course. But compared to my old (now sadly deceased) laptop, maybe it's not as slow as I think? That only had a 1.6 GHz Centrino and 700 MB RAM and that was plenty fast for regular stuff.

So what can I reasonably expect? Is it only going to be able to handle typing emails and showing a few photos, or can I run something like Eclipse to play with java development, or run something like Stellarium? Maybe even play videos? Should I go for a lightweight desktop or would it be happy with the demands of Gnome?

Has anyone any experience of these little things?

On my wife's IBM thinkpad T40, whenever we close the lid, you must put a password back in to unlock the user. However, in KDE4 I have all of those settings turned off. When I researched, it said to go after files in /etc/acpi/events but I didn't see anywhere to turn off the xscreensaver lid password deal. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Experts..

I recently got a new laptop (HP EliteBook 8540p); 4GB, Intel i7 vPro (quad-core). I'm running 2010.2 (2.6.33.7-server-2mnb #1 SMP) and was quite happy until recently I have experienced issues with the system freezing and/or becoming unresponsive while running minimal workloads and performing normal research via internet browsing.

When this occurs, the system locks me out completely and the only work around is to -- gulp --, power cycle the system

At first, I had know idea why the system was locking up, but I was able to ssh into the system while it was locked and " top " revealed " X " was taking 100% of the cpu. Whenever this occurs, no matter what process I kill, nothing will change the locked/frozen state of the system.

The only constant, or seems to be constant, is that this occurs when a browser is running. It doesn't matter if you are actively browsing or if the browser is just idle running in the background.

As far as browsers are concerned, I have had this happen with both Chromium & Firefox.

If it helps, I have graphics via nVidia NVS 5100M for notebooks

Any ideas???

Okay... so... I tried Ubuntu, liked it but couldn't stand the interface. It felt like I was on an iphone all day and I hate iphones. Learned about Mandriva, which looks more like windows and wanted to try it. (Dom't get me wrong, Ubuntu was awesome, but the way the desktop was set up just bugged me.)

Ubuntu installed fine from the USB, didn't take too much time and actually did something.

Set up a usb flash drive using Mandriva seed or whatever, using the one version of Mandriva 2010.

Plugged the usb in after setting the bios to boot from usb, like I did when installing Ubuntu, and it goes to this pretty blue window with different options.

I can't take a screen shot setting as how I'm on my desktop, and I'm installing it on my netbook.

~Blue Screen~

Boot Mandriva 2010 Spring

Install Mandriva 2010 Spring

Boot from Harddisk

F1 Help F2 Language F3 800 x 600 F4 Kernel Option

Then it flashes too fast and does a script thing that I can't see or read (black screen, really quick white writing) and then goes to a loading screen.

It did this last night when I checked the 'Install' option from the origin blue screen, and left it alone to do it's thing.... 8 hours later, upon waking it, it was still going. So I closed it down, redid it thinking I missed something and it reset itself and was stuck in a loop (because that's what it's been doing whenever there was an error in windows, I had 7 installed on it, then XP which blue screened, then Ubuntu which worked beautifully, and now I'm trying this.) and four hours later it was still in this loading screen.

Blue screen, with a flower looking thing on the side, huge bold Mandriva 2010 logo up top and then a light going in a sort of circle in the bottom and nothing else.

Please help.

Thanks,

Chey.

hi every body

I tried to install Mandriva 2010 on my (MSI cx620) laptop , the installation operation completed successfully , but when i restart the computer and boot on linux , many words on a black background appeared and disappeared quickly , and the screen remained black for unlimited time without any sign confirm's that the system is working . I don't know what is the problem here , but i think its a drivers problem .

these are my laptop's specifications :-

Hello all,

I'm having a hard time finding a vendor who sells a reasonably priced laptop with a 17+ display with a minimum of 1920x1200 resolution. They seemed to be easy to find a year or year and a half ago, but not now that my ancient laptop died (4+ years old, resolution: 14??x1050).

I've been using Mandriva since Mandrake 9.0 on Dells, but Dell no longer sells a 17 inch 1920x1200 unless you 'upgrade' to their hardcore alienware machines. Gateway a year ago or so used to make a FX ??? that had 1920 x 1200, but word on the street was the hardware was buggy with Mandriva.

Wish list:

Screen: 17+ inches preferably non-shiny

Resolution: min 1920 x 1200 (absolute min: 1400 x 1050) (Widescreen WUXGA better, and WQXGA (2560x1600) would be a dream)

Processor: Core 2 Duo (Core 2 Quad better)

Anyone know of a laptop maker that sells these? And anyone know if Mandriva 2009.1 will install on them? Worst case, anyone know of an older model that I can get off ebay or craigslist?

Thanks,

I have an HP NC6400 laptop, and I'm running Mandriva 2010. Currently, I have no battery and am using the adapter constantly. Whenever the machine is on, the fan keeps spinning up, then slows, then stops, over and over again in a cycle of about 15 seconds. As far as I can tell, the cpu is not overheating, but I am not certain of this. I have a load sensor going and it puts each core of the cpu at about 4% to 5% when nothing is happening. I am not sure how to check the temperature more precisely. Anything I can do?

I can't get this tablet to properly work. Here are the details:

Tablet: Wacom Graphire CTE-630BT (Wireless over BlueTooth)

Mandriva: 2010.1 Free 64 bits, all repositories configured

Problem:

- I can only left and right click with the pan (stylus)

- I can not move the cursor

- No pressure is sensed

What happens:

- bluetooth adapter is recognized and working (generic BT adapter)

- gnome-bluetooth finds the divece

- HAL finds the device

- x11-driver-input-wacom is installed

- I can read/write parameters with xsetwacom from console

- if I change something in 10-wacom.fdi and restart the device, lshal reflects the changes

I'm thinking of buying a graphics tablet. I've used one Aiptek model in the past, but I was not very happy with it's operation in Linux.

I wanted to ask your advice on the make and model that would work in a modern Linux (I've got the latest Mandriva Free installed). I would at least like to have the pressure option work on the pen. The function keys would also be nice.

If you have any experience or have heard any comments from other users, I would appreciate your input.

I've at least found Trust tablets and Wacom's bamboo tablets in local stores.

Thanks.

I have not tried safe settings yet. If I use no acpi it boots fine it seems.

2010.0 looks absolutely stunning on my ASUS EEE 1201HAB. That is, until booting after the first major update (which includes the two desktops). The boot procedes as normal until I get an error that the X-server has failed to initialize. I can get to a place to adjust the settings, but after I set the correct screen resolutions and run a test, it tells me about something that is missing (I'll fire her up and get the exact error in a mo).

I don't get it because the live CD and the initial installation appear to work perfectly.

ok, I'm at a loss

I tried for 3 years to sync a palm lifedrive and decided that due to its connect/disconnect there was no way my wife would ever be able to do this on her own.

SO I bought 2 Dell Axim X51's both of which run WM2005 which supposedly has been installed and supported in MDV since 2008

and yet NOTHING I do gets me connected and synced. Although I use KDE I even installed GNOME and nothings working.

A GREAT deal of it SEEMS ti be revolving around 2 things.

1) I cant install KitchenSync. Every time I try to install task-wm5sync-kde I get an error message saying it cant install because of a missinmg kdepim-kitchensync, which apparently doesnt esist in 2010, and when i get the one from 2009 I get a whole series of incompatibilities.

2 Synce-TrayIcon keeps saying thees no connection even though lsusb shows the dell is there. Then when I try ans check he box to start dccm I am told that it "cant start vdccm" well that was installed years ago w/ 2008, but god knows where it is now.

As I say I installed gnome and it SEEMED like it was working for a minute, but then it doesnt actually import data (under GNOME) I have Traicon, MultiSync -gui and synce-panel-monitor all installed and none of them find the device

the device is told to look on USB and it DOES sync under XP

anyone with ideas, I am all about them. AWILLIAMSON was a HUGE help when I was working on 2008 but unfortunately I really cant see bugging him now that he firmly entrenched in Fedora.

The video that USED to be available for 2009 is gone,

please help. anyone,

How can I get my subwoofer and side speakers working in Mandriva 2010.0? In Ubuntu, I had to edit this file:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and add this line to it:

options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo-sky

I didn't see a file named alsa-base in Mandriva 2010.0, so I added it to the end of the /etc/modprobe.conf file and rebooted ... but then my laptop went into an endless cycle of rebooting itself. I had to boot off another CD, mount the drive, and modify the modprobe.conf file back to its original state.

So, what's the proper way to do this in Mandriva 2010.0? I want to be able to use all my speakers on my laptop. Thank you! :)

Ok, Awilliamson and I used to go back and forth a lot trying to get my palm lifedrive to sync with MDV. After MONTHS of work it was determined that there was no way to make that happen in 2008.

Well my battery just died so now I have a Dell Axim, but I need 2, so, IF I can get the 30 running I'll but an X50 (or 2) for the replacement.

The Axim I have is an X30 which runs WM2003.

SO in 2010 there is a GREAT package called TASK-wm2003-common. The idea being that you load that and BAM youre ready to synce 2003

Unfortuinately everytime I ttry and load it I get an error saying that there is a compatibility issue with libopensync :=> 1.22.1

so I try and install the libopensync manually an i get another error (sorry I didnt copy that one down).

Now I can install the TASK for wm2005 just fine, but I dont own the X50 yet

If anyone has actually used an Axim X0 or X51, pLEASE message me back.

thanks

For awhile I have been trying to get J-Pilot working on this dinosaur

using #!-lite (crunchbang) 9.04 (can't use KDE or GNOME on this dinosaur).

The J-Pilot folks couldn't help. I also tried coldsync and PilotManager

(other Palm sync programs) with compilation error. So I decided not

to fuss, but just use a liveCD to add a few applications into my Palm Treo

700p (already have cable). I don't want to sync my calendar or addresses,

just add some applications, so this approach makes sense.

I want to boot a liveCD, access my palm files, sync, and logoff. I do

NOT want to configure any program and worry about any other hassle.

I.e., the distro should have whatever it needs to sync.

Does Mandriva 2010 has J-Pilot, kpilot, or any other Palm sync

program by DEFAULT? If so, which window environment (KDE, GNOME, or XFCE)?

Please take a look at your Mandriva, if you have the latest version,

and see if you have a Palm sync program built-in.

If not, which linux-based distro(s) has (have) a Palm sync program?

I purchased and tried InstantOn which has recently become available in the Mandriva store. In seems to use Gnome but I did not find any way to add packages. I see that the minimum hardware requirements for InstantOn are 256MB RAM, 1.4GB drive storage. Most netbooks come with drive storage 8MB or more, which is large enough to load one of the Mandriva editions with a full desktop such as LXDE or maybe Gnome.

I am wondering when, if ever, would InstantOn be a good choice for use on a netbook? Is it good only for the few netbooks with drive storage larger than 1.4GB but less than what's needed to run a full Mandriva edition?

My daughter recently received a new Toshiba laptop from Best Buy as a gift from the grandparents. She is 9, so her only computing need is web-based games. I tolerated Vista for awhile, but then one day the laptop had trouble booting and I used this event as an excuse to wipe the drive clean and install the KDE version of Mandriva 2010.0.

All seemed to be fine for a week or so and then she began to have trouble with the laptop intermittently freezing for a minute or so. I ran fsck on the boot and home partitions and found errors which were repaired successfully. The freezing continue however, with dmesg showing hard disk errors.

At this point I am ready for some warranty activity. For no reason at all, I asked my daughter log in using the xguest account instead of her own account. To my surprise, she has been playing for several hours with no freezes.

So, I have HP nx6125 laptop and cannot run the 2010.0 live cd (with KDE, haven't tried with gnome yet) on it - it takes over 25 minutes to boot and when it is ready for use, every mouse movement freezes it for about 5 minutes. Anyone else having similar problems?

Hi,

I've a Mandriva 2008.1 and recently I've updated my kernel to the new 2.6.24.7-laptop-3mnb.

Since this update the wireless card doesn't work.

If I try to enable it from netapplet the system say:

Could not install the packages (madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-desktop586-1mnb, madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-desktop586-2mnb, madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-laptop-1mnb, madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-server-2mnb, madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-laptop-2mnb, madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.7-server-1mnb, dkms-madwifi)!

and than:

Some packages (madwifi) are required but aren't available. These packages can be found in Mandriva Linux One, Mandriva Linux Powerpack, or in the official non-free package repository.

The following component is missing: ath_pci

The required files can also be installed from this URL:

Now, I guess you: wath can I do to install this ath_pci module ?

I give you all info you need to solve my problem.

My wireless card is:

ok, wifes new laptop (well 6 months but just getting to it)

Its a compaq dual core 2.3GHZ intel MB/SOUND with built in NVIDIA 6800 display adapter.

I loaded 2009 when she 1st got it. but never got the chance to really tighten it down, so when I went in the other night to change the grub settings imagine my surprise when it took 10 minutes to get a desktop and THEN things REALLY started slowing down!

So I figured I would try 2009.1 so I loaded the FREE DVD , having just burned it, and rebooted and started a fresh install.

Everything goes fine until the very last screen when you are preented with all the options and asked to agree or congigure the zones, hardware.nic forewall etc.

Well I knew that since it was a wide screen laptop a slightly offset resolution might be in orders, so I went into MCC to change it to 1024x600 and things got REAL weird.

I reset the driver (NVIDIA 6000 and up) and hit TEST and got "could not load module FREETYPE" try again, so I tried again, and tried changing things ever so slightly, each time, getting more and more generic each time, always with the same result.

so i booted xp (its a dual boot device) logged into the forums and found someone saying to use the boot command SPEEDBOOT=no

that worked well, and things started to hum after that, but still with pretty generic settings.

is there an NVIDIA driver I need to get?

anyone have any ither ideas?

Thanks

I'm trying out 2009.0 live on a borrowed Thinkpad T41p, and it seemed to be working fine. I wanted to try out Skyping with two-way video to see if it's just my laptop which can't do it or if it's a general problem. So I got as far as installing Skype, disabling pulseaudio, testing the webcam, and making the test call, but then I left it alone for a few minutes and it went to sleep.

I've tried the Function - F4 (with the moon symbol), I've tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F7, I've tried Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and Escape and Fn and Ctrl-Escape and everything else I can think of, even shutting the lid and opening, pulling the power out and back in, tapping (but not holding) the power button. It reacts, making a noise when I unplug the power and adjusting the screen backlight for the function keys for brightness, but I can't get it to wake up. Any clues? Or is the only option forcing a reboot with the power button?

Assuming I do have to reboot it, is there a way to stop it going into this sleep mode if I know it won't be able to wake up again?

Yes I know people have moaned about yet another such thread, so I'll try to keep my questions a bit more specific. It looks like my current laptop is too sick to be made better (according to the shops I've taken it to so far), so it looks like I'm reluctantly in the market for a new laptop.

My most important requirement is the screen, it should be around 15 inches and preferably non-widescreen (but that's looking difficult to satisfy) and preferably non-shiny (ditto), and preferably around the same resolution I've got now (1400x1050). I don't care too much about speed, or graphics speed, but it should be decent build quality and reliable. Obviously it should be linux-friendly too.

So I'm looking at a few different models like Dell Latitude (business model), Lenovo Thinkpad (probably R series), maybe Samsung, but I wondered if you lot have any particular advice. An advantage of Dell is that I can choose every aspect (including which keyboard I want), but of course the disadvantage is that I can't see them or try out the keyboard before I buy... interestingly though I've been told I can buy a Latitude without an OS if I do it by phone!

In particular, I have no clue about the graphics cards - my old laptop had integrated Intel graphics and was fine for what I use it for. In the higher end laptops you get one of the two other major brands, am I right in thinking this only has a noticeable effect for fast 3d games? If my 4-year old laptop could run Google Earth fine with a cheap graphics system, is there any reason to go for a more expensive one? And between the two big brands (Ati, Nvidia), would I be right in thinking that there are just as many people saying "don't buy A, buy B" as there are saying "don't buy B, buy A" ?

I cannot connect Bluetooth input devices (mouse and keyboard) as a normal user on my Dell Latitude D630 (Mandriva 2009.1). In the KDE Bluetooth Device Manager, the devices get picked up and shown as "connected" but they do not respond. If I then move the mouse, the status switches between "connected" and "not connected" but the mouse does not respond (i.e. cursor is not moved).

When I try to add the device manually as a normal user, I get the following:

$ hidd --search

Searching ...

Connecting to device 00:07:61:63:77:CD

HID create error 13 (Permission denied)

So it does seem to find the device but there is a permissions problem in connecting.

When I run the command as root:

# hidd --search

then everything works as expected and I can connect the devices. However, this is a pain because

1. the devices do not connect automatically on startup and I have to manually issue this command every time,

2. the devices don't reconnect automatically after a timeout.

Any ideas which permissions to set? Everything worked perfectly under 2009.0 and this is really annoying me....

My laptop (with Centrino processor) seems to be running hotter underneath than usual - either it's the summer heat or something different with 2009.0, but whatever, the base of the laptop feels hot. This may or may not be the reason why my RAM died this week, but I'd quite like it if the new RAM I just bought didn't go the same way...

Frequency stepping certainly seems to be enabled, gkrellm shows 600MHz when I'm not doing anything, which is good, but I'm wondering if there's a way to control the fan settings so it comes on at a lower temperature. The fan does come on if the processor really has to do work but I'm wondering whether that fan cools the RAM chips anyway.

Hi, I've just installed 2009.9 on my laptop, and have a couple of niggles with kde 4.2 ("only a couple" you say?)

Also, my synaptic touchpad is very sensitive to touch, but how can I configure it?

Qsynaptics is installed, but has no ability to control sensitivity, (perhaps it's a driver issue?)

On my wife's laptop I have installed Mandriva 2008 and 2009. 2008 works perfectly, but every time you boot/reboot 2009 you get a scrambled graphics image that looks like it is being viewed through some particularly irritating filter. This does not occur up to and including the log in screen, but after that the screen is pixellated and horrible to look at. Normally you would expect this to be a problem with xorg.conf, but I know it isn't, because if I restart the X server then the screen returns to normal - now xorg hasn't changed because of an X server restart, but what you see has, so wihih?

Since 2008 is perfect, I tried copying xorg.conf from there to 2009, but it makes no difference. I can't think of a way around this at the moment, can you?

Incidentally, it is an ATI graphics card using the fglrx driver, and I have tried 'aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and that doesn't make any difference either.

Hi, have a thinkpad x61 tablet here. I cant get the volume buttons to work. I installed tpb, but when I go into tools-> thinkpad configuration I get an error about /dev/thinkpad not existing.

How do I get them to work with the OSD and stuff? I have gotten it working before with another top. But no luck here.

What would be a good Linux to use on a laptop with an 8GB flash disk? How about Mandriva Mini? I see an iso file named "mandriva-linux-2008.0-free-mini-dual.iso" HERE, what's that?

Of course an OS for use on a flash disk should not write to the disk often, so I am looking for something with a non-journaled file system and very little system logging.
