Not sure if anyone remembers Red star here, but he used to make packages for the Mandrake community before moving on the Pckinuxos. Anyways, it seems cancer is trying its best to take him down. Think of him in your thoughts and prayers, he needs it.

As I was doing it, I realized that while I keep my system updated all the time, rarely do I update my Kernel. Am I alone in this? I can still remember using the command line in Mandriva, or was it still Mandrake, 9.1 to update my kernel and being worried that I was about to fork my install. Now, in Mint I can simply choose a kernel, apply and reboot to use it. For the average users, how important are the kernel updates?

Why not to use Arch Linux

This is probably out of left field given I haven't posted here in a while, and this forum is not as active as it was back in the day, but for anyone who is still around:

Any of the old heads around here will likely remember that I was a fan of Arch Linux when it first started. However, I've watched the Arch community over the past few years and it's turned into a bunch of unhelpful pricks, with standard "RTFM" replies. As such, I can no longer recommend it. I've watched time and time again as people ask rather simple questions, stating they tried to figure it out on their own and couldn't understand what they need to do, only to be linked to the same wiki page they already read and didn't comprehend.

This is the antithesis of what we need in the Linux world today, which is a more helpful community willing to walk people through the steps they need to take. Much like the attitude we've had on these forums. If you, or anyone you know, is looking for a new distro, I recommend steering clear of Arch. There are better options with more helpful communities.

Support distros that support their users.

Hi all, It has been a while. I miss this forum and in an attempt to get some good discussion going.....

Ok, you just finished the install of {your distro here}, and signed into it. What do you generally do next? I always do a system update, and if I am trying a new distro, make sure all of the sources I need are setup. Then I always install K3b, DVDrip, playonlinux, gpodder and Xtrkcad, along with any missing multimedia codecs. Then with playonlinux, I install office 2007. I like libre/open office but if I need to do work from home, I need to make sure the format is correct, and I have had some issues in the past with libre / open office.

Now, while I do my updates and installs, the stock wallpaper is gone and I either search for a pic or use one I already have.

So, how do you set yourself up?

I know this topic has been covered several times, even by me, but this time I can't figure out how to get the video working. I've googled until my eyes are starting to bug out. I think I'm just missing a file somewhere, but I obviously cannot find it. As always, I'm mine own worse enemy. The problem was caused by my upgrading my system, then "demoting" it back to 2009.1. After I quit using 2009 a couple of years ago, my computer just wasn't been the same, but always had some annoying "twitches" here and there. When I had 2009.1 the first time, the video in skype was working, and even with 2010, but after going to 2011, no. I even went to using backports from MIB. That's when things were the best, but still not perfect. I got frustrated with it all, and decided to return to 2009.1. I think my computer is just getting too old for the new programs. Anyway, back to my present problem. I'm still using the script that Ian wrote for me. V4l works, because when I put this command, vlc v4l:///dev/video0, in console, vlc comes on. Obviously my web cam works with cheese, too. If I start skype in console, there are no messages.

Ideas? Thanks,

Hi there,

My name is Bertrand, from Glasgow. But, I am French originally. Last year, in December 2010, I wanted to put a website on e-mail encryption and protecting the secrecy of correspondence on the Internet. This is probably one of the less known and less practice aspects of network security (protecting data communication).

A few weeks ago, I went back to it, added some text to it and improved the written articles which had already been prepared. The original name of it was protecturprivacy.org, I had purchased the domain name and recorded the video tutorials using this domain. Earlier this month, I made the decision to use encryptyourmessages.co.uk. So, this is the story around it.

The website is now online at www.encryptyourmessages.co.uk. It is built on the CMS CMS Made Simple. Nice and easy collaboration platform for me.

It is intended to be read by non-IT literate people too. That’s why I tried to explain everything in plain English.

The reasons for me coming to post here are I have no specific knowledge of the distribution, for the moment I am the only person involved, and I am highly interested in contributions.

I would like to find people who would be interested in participating in the project. Hoping to find people who like the idea and who could write and maintain tutorials on a specific Linux distribution. For example, the tutorial can be a different visual tool or command-line tool available on your distribution. The website is in English so everything has to be in the same language.

The idea I have in mind is first to find people who can write and keep these tutorials up-to-date, and second, once the tutorials are available, install a message board in order to help people/visitors.

All this is and will be time consuming. That’s one of the reasons to look for people who desire to join the work and submit texts and/or videos. It also true I very rarely use Linux and don’t have too much practice on it, one more explanation to try to find motivated minds.

Another important point is I want people from the future team to use their real first name. That’s because interacting with Steve, Andrew or else is much nicer than if the other person is called Tux2000, SuperDragon or else. It brings respect and politeness naturally during the exchanges. Have seen it working on another website a few years ago and it doesn’t reveal too much about yourself, so there is no breach into your privacy.

A message board would first be installed for the team to exchange messages, ideas and else. Then, it would be open to visitors later.

Many thanks for your time with reading it. Hope a few of you can offer their help.

The website is still under construction, a few things have to be finalized. But you check it online now.

Regards,

Bertrand

Unfortunately, I gotta get another computer. An old computer with some even older parts has decided to start limping.
Native Client – a Google open source project more than three years in the making – is specifically designed to run native code securely inside web browsers, putting web applications on "the same playing field" as local applications, providing the raw speed needed to compete with traditional software on 3D games, video editing, and more.

I've got various pieces of hardware at home, but sometimes it was a bit annoying from one piece of hardware to the next. Some had more functionality, and some didn't and neither would have what I needed. Then came the age-old problem that sooner or later, no more firmware updates are released by the vendor. Although it's not a problem, because you can always change it. And so, welcome DD-WRT.

Now, my hardware has much more functionality. I'm now running Linux on my router, and will most likely now be able to upgrade to newer DD-WRT firmware as it becomes available. Now, my web interfaces on all my devices are now the same. I have a Netgear WG602v3 and ASUS WL-330gE running DD-WRT and in terms of management, everything is in the same place on both devices. I have functionality that I never had before, and I have some cool features such as showing me the quality of wireless signal.

Outstanding is my ASUS RT-N10 router which I'm looking to upgrade in the near future smile

I have been running Mandriva (Mandrake) since 2003 and have had good luck with it. But that was partly because of the support supplied by this forum.
I'm using it in Linux and will need to send encrypted files to Windows users, so I wondered if ccrypt-1.9 works in Windows vista and 7. Can people let me know? Also, what are encrypted files called? For example in Linux it would be, filename.mp3.cpt for mp3 files.

ccrypt-1.9 is from http://www.mathstat.dal.ca/~selinger/ccrypt/ 650Kb. There is a version for Windows 95-XP. You also need ccrypt_gui_integration.zip 20Kb from http://ccrypt.sourceforge.net/VF/README.html which allows you to encrypt/decrypt files/folders by right-clicking on them in Linux KDE, Gnome, and Windows 98+. I think that in Windows you double click 'ccrypt-Win32-install.bat' to install it.

The Brazilian government education authority has selected Intel-powered classmate PCs running Mandriva Linux for educational use nationwide. Mandriva is working with the hardware manufacturer partner Positivo, to deliver this open source solution which will help teachers to improve students’ education. Also, this will be one of the world biggest organized deployment of Linux, with potential to get to 1.5 Million units, and confirms Linux as a key, cost-effective alternative PC operating system. The hardware, operating system and software is targeted to have a per student cost around USD $200.

The Intel-powered classmate PC is a small and rugged, fully functional mobile PC, specially designed by Intel for primary students in emerging markets. Brazil will be one of the first countries to deploy Intel-powered classmate PCs in their schools to such a large scale. The Brazilian government’s decision to choose as Intel Learning Series solutions running Mandriva Linux on a classmate PCs reaffirms Linux as the preferred operating system for the global education market with Mandriva as the Linux education market leader.

Linux is fast. That's why 90%+ of the Top 500 fastest supercomputers run it. What some people don't realize is that Linux is much better at delivering speed for servers and supercomputers than it is on the desktop. That was by design. But over the last few years, there's been more interest in delivering fast desktop performance. Now there's a Linux kernel patch that may give you a faster, much faster, desktop experience.

The patch by Linux kernel developer Mike Galbraith adds a mere 233 lines of code to the kernel's scheduler, but it cuts desktop latency down by a factor of ten. That's impressive — it's almost like getting a new computer.

Eugeni Dodonov, newly appointed Mandriva Cooker Manager, has posted the details of the next two Mandriva releases as well as announced the new release schedule policy. One of these release comes as a Christmas surprise, something seen from the Mandriva project before.

Dodonov posted to the Cooker mailing list that Mandriva will be releasing two releases in the coming months. The first will be seen around December 22, as a Christmas present for all Mandriva users. Mandriva 2010.2 is a freshly updated version of 2010.1, or Mandriva 2010 Spring, with all the security and bugs fixes that have been implemented since 2010.1 was released, "plus also lots of improvements, stability and performance fixes in many, many packages."

In addition, Dodonov announced the release schedule for Mandriva 2011. An alpha will be released January 31, 2011; Beta 1 will be released February 28, 2011; Beta 2 on March 28, 2011; Release Candidate on April 25, 2011; and Mandriva 2011 Final should be announced on May 30, 2011.

Starting with the 2011 release, Mandriva will change to a one release per year schedule replacing their previous two per year practice. Dodonov said this is to give developers more time to cook "greater releases, and - of course - will give us more time to test, validate and further improve the overall quality of the release."

Exact technical specifications for each will be published online in the coming days and weeks on the Mandriva Wiki.

Open sourcers have seized control of the OpenOffice project and product and declared their independence from database giant Oracle.

Oracle had been OpenOffice's principal contributor - a role it inherited thanks to its acquisition of the well meaning but slow-witted Sun Microsystems earlier this year.

Driving home the changes, OpenOffice.org project is now The Document Foundation while the OpenOffice.org suite has been given the temporary name of LibreOffice.

Oracle, meanwhile, has been humiliatingly invited to re-join the OpenOffice community by applying to the Foundation. It's also been asked to donate the OpenOffice.org brand that it owns to the community.

As most of you know I've been with Mandrake/Mandriva for a couple of years now. I was always under the impression that the distribution was based around Red Hat. That assumption has been now brought into question. I have been toying with building Mysql-Workbench from the source files from the mysql website. During the process I came across some dependencies and discovered they were more pertinent to Fedora. The question is Are we Fedora rpm based, Redhat rpm based or a mixture of the two? I am confused. Easily done for me I know.

As we all know, ZFS is by far the best file system.

KQ has ported ZFS to Linux and was a much awaited release since January 2010.

No, I am not talking about the bugfest named gimpshop (R.I.P.). I'm talking about the regular, official gimp.

Gimp devs have stubbornly rejected for years the requests for single window mode in Gimp (Photoshop-alike). Now on the devel version of Gimp (currently 2.7.1) the single window mode is embedded in the program. It does start the traditional Gimp way, but you can pick single window mode from the "Window" menu anytime you like.

While at first I was excited by this feature, I do have to say that a) the devel version of Gimp is still quite buggy, and B ) I am so used at working in Gimp in multiple window mode, that I have hardly used the new mode up to now. Oh well... :P

They have also clarified the products covered under the bounty to better reflect the threats they are focused upon. They still include Firefox and Thunderbird obviously, but they have also added Firefox Mobile and any Mozilla services that those products rely upon for safe operation. These are products they have traditionally paid bounties for in a discretionary basis anyway, but they wanted to make that explicit. Release and beta versions of those products are eligible.

Ever since Google announced its purchase of video codec company On2 in August 2009, there's been an expectation that On2's VP8 codec would someday be open-sourced and promoted as a new, open option for HTML5 video. An open VP8 would offer comparable quality to H.264, but without the patent and royalty encumbrances that codec suffers.

Google, Mozilla, and Opera have announced the launch of the WebM Project. The goal of the project is to develop a high-quality, open-source, royalty-free video format suitable for the Web. WebM video files do indeed use VP8 for their video compression, coupled with Vorbis audio compression. The video and audio data will be combined into container files that are based on the open-source Matroska container.
