In relation to the Mandriva 2011 operating system.

What do I need to know about the software entitled "Wine"?

...

First of all, based on what you know about it.

Is it worth having on a hard drive?

Also, is there a better alternative?

I'm curious to know if there might be a more recent version of Mandriva in an OpenVZ container than Mandriva 2006.

Having been a long time Mandriva user and now playing with OpenVZ on a nice, hefty server, it would be nice to be able to work in the nice, familiar environment of Mandriva.

I'm specifically looking for 2010.0 or newer. Or should I give the 2006minimal a try and see if it'll take an upgrade via urpmi... then clone it?

Hi,

I am trying to use my floppy drive (haven't done that in nearly a decade) so I can burn a new BIOS for an older computer (not mine). I need to burn this out of WinXP, which I am running in Virtualbox. WinXP doesn't see floppies when they are inserted and I have no signs of one within 2010.1. What am I missing? Any hints would be appreciated.

Hi All,

I've recently moved over to Linux ( having tried it in the past, but not having the free time to learn how to run it as I want).

I have worked on computers since the 8086 days/ DOS, in the early 80's and been through the Windows mill ( 3/3.11/win95/win98/win2000/winxp etc), running both desktop and server environments.

I am quite impressed with the 2008 build and am currently running kernel 2.6.22.16-desktop-1mdv. My problem is I cannot find the kernel files in /usr/src, which I need to set the KERN_DIR to enable virtualbox to run correctly.

I have installed Virtualbox 1.5.6 but am unable to start any virtual machines.

My error code is:

VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root.

the log file shows:

Makefile:75: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.

I would like to stick with this distribution, but am stuck between having already set up virtualbox on Scientific were the src kernel was in the usual place ( /usr/src ) and I could point the KERN references to.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Alright a big issue I see in Mandy 2010 is wine, and playonlinux menu creation.

It seems that neither wine or playonlinux menus are working with mandriva, I use both as I do need some windows apps here and there but not enough for a dual boot or Vbox install.

The menus work fine in openSUSE and Ubuntu in both KDE and Gnome, but not in Mandriva's KDE or gnome.

I installed it using urpmi on the command line. It installs fine, and I can run a XP-home-sp3 installation without problems. After I shutdown, and boot the system up, Vbox will not start the guest system. It reports a 'NS_ERROR_Failure 0x80004005' and RC= -1908. The prompts tell me to run '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'. When I do, it fails to build and insert the vboxdrv module. It reports a 'vboxdrv: No Sybbol version for Struct_module'.

I have verified DKMS is installed. I run a 3d desktop, and that will not compiled without DKMS.

I think something is not installed for the current kernel. Bit what?

If I uninstall the VirtualBox rpm and re-install it, all works again until I shutdown and re-boot. I don't leave my system running at night.

I recently decided to reinstall my virtual copy of xp, the only major change I made from the previous install was the partition on which the .vdi file lives and the mount point. So my setup is that I run vbox from ~/.VirtualBox as is usual, but the virtual hard drive is on /dev/sda12 which is mounted as /mnt/windowsvm or not - this is where the confusion lies. As I run vbox from a user account I have chowned both the folder /mnt/windowsvm and the vdi file itself (xp.vdi) to my username. The only difference from the way it has been running in the past is that previously I housed the old .vdi file on /media not /mnt. The old vdi file and containing folder have been deleted, so cannot be influencing things in any way.

At this stage I should tell you that the installation runs perfectly, there is no fault whatsoever with the way the virtual copy of xp runs and there is no fault with the way the computer runs, but something impossible is happening.

If I use fstab to mount /dev/sda12 as /mnt/windowsvm then start virtualbox, it immediately says that the drive is inaccessible. If I comment out the mount command in fstab so that /dev/sda12 is unmounted, then virtualbox runs perfectly!! Now that is impossible, but that is what appears to be happening.

I can confirm with both the 'mount' command and 'gparted' that /dev/sda12 is unmounted and yet the virtual hard drive that lives on that partition works normally. If /dev/sda12 is mounted (again confirmed by 'mount') the vdi it contains is inaccessible. WIHIH!

I don't want to overload this post with too much information at this stage, let me know if you want more, but I will include the fstab entry here - you will notice it is commented out - that is the only way vbox will work????

#LABEL=windowsvm /mnt/windowsvm ext3 relatime,rw,user 0 0

I should also add that /dev/sda12 is a freshly formatted ext3 partition that has been error checked twice now with no errors reported. Also I am not running xp from a 'saved state' or a 'snapshot' in my home folder, only from the 'unmounted' vdi file itself.

EDIT. I did change virtualbox versions recently as well (v3.0.4) is this new version capable of mounting linux folders by itself? It would certainly know where the vdi file is located as that information is in the ~/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml file. Having said that, I just started xp in virtualbox and then ran 'mount' in linux - there is no sign of /dev/sda12 being mounted.

Hello

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the Software, Games or Emulators subforum, so I decided to post this in the Software subforum.

I have a Playstation 1 and I also have a legal copy of the Playstation 1 game I want to play with the pSX emulator.

My computer has Mandriva 2009 Spring One withj KDE 4.2.

My computer has 1 GB RAM, a 200 GB hard drive and an ATI Radeon 9200 PRO graphics card.

I am trying to get the Playstation 1 emulator psX to work.

I previously had gotten psX to work fine on Mandriva 2009 and Ubuntu 8.04.

I downloaded the compressed file containing the latest version of psX from its official website, and then uncompressed the compressed.

The compressed file contains the psX binary for running the psX emulator, and a readme text file with instructions on getting psX to work and how to use it, and a folder named BIOS for putting a Playstation 1 BIOS file.

I followed all the instructions in the readme file, including putting a Playstation 1 BIOS file (SCPH1001.bin) in the BIOS folder, and installing all the required Linux dependencies.

After that, I made sure the psX binary was executable and then I ran it.

After running it, it asks me where the Playstation 1 BIOS file is,

I select the PS 1 BIOS file (called SCPH1001.bin) in the BIOS folder, and then a faint window appears and then disappears.

I don't know why the psX emulator isn't working.

Please help me get it working.

How to play Mu on Linux with Wine:

My install: MDK 10.1, Kernel 2.6.10, Xorg 6.8.2.0, Wine 20050211-2, NVIDIA acellerated drivers (GeForce MX 4000).

1- The Wine is the normal wine, is not winex or cedega.

2- Install Internet Explorer 6 with the script sidenet 1.8.1. Get this at http://sidenet.ddo.jp/winetips/.

3- Don't let the script Link the Fonts folder.

4- I installed the MS core fonts, but don't know if it is necessary.

5- Copy the fonts from /usr/share/fonts/wine and msttcorefonts (if installed) to ~/c/windows/fonts/.

6- The configs that metters to fonts are this:

***

"PerfectGraphics" = "N" <- You can let Y here to gain some glality.

"ClientSideWithRender" = "Y"                <- N will be a pain, but works too.

"ClientSideWithCore" = "N"                   <- N to gain some frames.

"ClientSideAntiAliasWithRender" = "N"   <- If Y here the fonts don't apper.

"ClientSideAntiAliasWithCore" = "N"      <- N to gain some frames.

"UseDGA" = "Y" <- Is needed to play games.

"Drivers" = "winealsa.drv" <- For good quality sound, but other works too.

"Managed" = "N" <- As a option to the launcher may be good.

***

7- Install wine-utils is not necessary but is good.

8- Remeber to put the Mu folder on a place that are seed as a letter drive for wine, ~/c/windows/games/muonline for example is a good place.

9- Go Go Go... Play Mu and be happy.

10- Smile.

Ps. All the versions are showed only to documentation, may be work with other packages versions.

In resume, wine run Mu, with IE and fonts right configured. :D

My entire ~/.wine/config file if you want is attached and is here:

Hi,

I'm toying with VMWare 2 and it's currently driving me mad !!!!!!!!!!!

It installed OK, I created the VM, OK.

BUT how do I see the GUI of this damn thing???? Not the web one, that one's fine. With VMWare 1, starting the VM allowed me to SEE it booting. Now all seems to happen in memory and I can't find how to SEEEEEE the guest!

I found my way to the vmrun command and tried this:

[yves@sedentaire ~]$ /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmrun -T server -h https://localhost:8333/sdk -u yves -p xxxxxx start '[standard] VM/VM.vmx'

Although I see things happening in the events list in the web GUI, still nothing REAL on screen! Even if I append 'gui' to the command above, as suggested by the help text.

How does it work?

Hi there.

For many reasons I want to run some Windows programs (Office 2007, CorelDraw, etc.) on my Mandriva Box. I tried to install Office 2007 through wine but couldn't succeed. Anyway I succeed with Office 2003.

Now I want to try to install WinXP on my Mandriva with a virtual machine. In MCC I search for VBox and I got dkms-virtualbox - VirtualBox OSE kernel module Version: 2.0.2-2mdv2009.0. I don't know if this is the package for running Sun VirtualBox?

Do you know some other VM that can be run in Mandriva?

I have a dual boot system with Mandriva 2009 and Vista. (The Vista, alas, came first).

All of my documents and such are stored on the Vista partition, and I access them freely from Mandriva.

I noted that the WinHQ claims that OneNote works with Wine 1.14 (my version).

How do I set it up? I have never used Wine before, and don't know what to do. Can I use the installed version on my other partition? Or do I need to install it again?

I'm running a Virtual PC 2007 machine under WinXP SP2 and I want to install Mandriva 2009 One KDE. I downloaded the BitTorrent and put the ISO in the Virtual Disk drive, and booted the Virtual Machine. It came up with the Mandriva logo and all that, said it was "booting linux kernel" and then it went blank and nothing happened. I rebooted again, pressing F3 and changing the graphics mode to Text. I got a whole bunch of wierd messages going too fast to read, and when it was over I captured the screen with VPC and got this:

I'm thinking that it may be possible to get a virus within the virtual XP, but it wouldn't effect anything on my Mandriva install, the need to defrag from within the Virtual XP, hmmm, I'm not sure, the whole concept has sought of blown my little mind, and I'm trying not to think to hard about it.

I extracted the tar file, and put SCPH1001.bin ps1 bios image (this image worked perfectly on WIndows) in the bios folder of the emulator.

I followed the instructions in the readme.txt file which came with the pSX emulator, including installing al the required packages.

After doing this, I followed the instructions to open pSX, including making the binary executable.

I ran the pSX binary from the terminal.

Also does anyone have any opinions on the relative merits of these 2 packages. I must stress that virtualbox looks very good to me. I used the binary to get usb support. I haven't tried connecting to a networked printer yet but hope that a straight windoze printer driver install will look after that.

I installed wine and tinkered around with it a bunch tonight. The biggest headache so far was switching directories. Navigating to long file paths that you don't have memorized seems to be quite the pain. Is there an easy solution to this?

Anyway my first challenge is with steam. I got a handful of other windows apps running including utorrent, which is fairly exciting, so I know I have it installed correctly. I followed some instructions on a website; it looks like wine makes a fake windows of sorts in /drive_c/ so I installed steam in there and it seems like everything went fine. So I go to run it and it updates and gives me the login screen, but when I go to log in it gives me some authentication error like my account doesn't exist. Now I could be typing in my password wrong or something, but I really don't think so. I can check in windows later.

I noticed I got these warnings when I was trying to log on:

[root@localhost games]# wine steam.exe

The part after the 30 is where it stops, then I try to log on and I get the stub! things and it fails. I tried installing samba because that's where the file is from that it's complaining about earlier on, but that didn't seem to help any. Of course I could have messed up the install for it since I don't reall know what I'm doing. Also got a few warnings while steam was loading that I figured I'd throw up just for kicks.

So. Anyone know what I need to do? Was i on the right track trying to install samba? Need to do something else? I've seen a bunch of people running steam so I know it's possible...
