I was hoping this would be simple, but I am getting lost so easily :(

What I have is I have built a new PC running Mageia to be my server/main business desktop. On this machine I will do most of my creative stuff and store my data.

I have a windows 7 laptop which is neccesary for some programs which I need to use that are proprietary.

What I had planned to do was set up a samba share so that my windows 7 laptop can access the linux server with all the data on it, and treat it as a local drive/file.

Am I going the right way about this? If so, can I please get some advise on how to make this happen?

Or if I'm going about it wrong, a new plan of attack?

I want one laptop with the same wifi adapter (internal) to connect to :

1. Home net (wpa pre-share key)

2. Library net (open)

3. coffee shop net (open)

4 friends net (wep- password)

(obviously not at the same time) whenever I go there. Seems I have to delete the interface and re-enter each network's configuration in network center or in tray icon as I move from one network to the next over the course of several days. i might not go to coffee shop for two weeks or Library for a month but I want the connection there when I need it.

Doesn't drakconnect have a profile saved somewhere? Once I set up each network I would like it that whenever the network I want shows up I can just click on it and it connects me? Am I missing something simple?

Sorry about the above formatting I am not sure what I am losing in regards to the spaces that are supposed to be there.

The actual server IP and Domain are properly setup as my webserver and e-mail server are working fine.

I am trying to route all the internal PCs of various types with the Manrdake 10.1 DHCP server. I had it actually working but not sure what I may have broken as after a reboot and reading Isle of Wight's simple tutorial about how to set this up and following his instructions.

SMB locked on boot also but I have disabled that for now.

So the server has a static IP from my ISP, it is my webhost and has the domain name setup on it. All through eth0. eth1 has a static IP of 192.168.1.1 and is where I want the DHCP to offer 192.168.1.X ips to internal computers. Eventually I want to add a WAP for the business as well.

Problems

1: DHCP stopped working. dhcpd start returns "failed" and nothing else.

2: Allow traffic between eth0 and eth1

Sorry for being slightly paranoid here but I also have spent many hours adding IPs to my iptables to block hacks.

So what other information is needed and suggestions where to check as well as what would be recommended to upgrade software wise. It is a very standard install of mandrake 10.1 with just about everything and the kitchen sink thrown in.

I did update webmin to 1.580 and I use putty to access the command line from my office computer which is on a separate network and from home.

I really am sorry if I am rehashing what others have asked but I have not seen a clear and obvious answer of what to look for and how it should actually look.

I have also tried doing a lot of this through the "Configure your Computer" on the KDE install.

As much as I know and can do this one is escaping me for some reason and if you want to treat me like an absolute total newbie I do not mind.

I have My Main fully operational Computer complete with extensive Hardware upgrade and running with Mageia-1. It is connected by Wi-Fi to my ADSL-2 Modem operating over landline.

My Spare and Backup Computer, now using major components taken from my Main machine, and running Mandriva2010.2 is now fully functional and connected to the same landline ADSL-2 modem by Wi-FI also.

Both are working perfectly this way.

Now I would like to be able to swap Photos, Videos and Music between them.

Can anyone tell me what programmes I need to install to be able to do this. Please keep the suggested methods as simple as possible.

I would hope to be able to do it via the Mandriva/Mageia Control Centres. I have tried some considerable googling on this subject but most of the suggestions are overly geekish and very difficult to understand or follow.

When I ran the above command, it killed my internet service, and I had to run MCC again to get it up. Of course, as I said, MCC said there were problems, but it still gave me internet service. Here's what it said (and always says):

Problems occured during the network connectivity test.

 

This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.

 

You might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings.

Any ideas on how to resolve the problem?

I have a new router. I have been able to connect all my wireless devices including Win7 PCs, Wii, DSi's, wireless network printer with no trouble except my Mandriva 2010.2 KDE PC. From the graphical control panel I am not getting any useful feedback beyond a connection failed message. I am using WPA2-PSK which I have used in the past with no trouble. Any suggestions on trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated.

Free would be nice, but pay-as-you go is OK as well, provided we talk consumer rates.

Has anyone managed to get it working with a Netgear Wireless Adapter MA101?

Most forums suggest using an NDISwrapper from Sourceforge but the MA101 isn't on their database.

Any help gratefully received.

Just loaded 2010.2, and am having problems with accessing web pages. I have the firewall off, and seem to have no problems with pages that are not secure. Secure log-in pages, such as for eBay, won't load. I can get some of them finally with Chromium (in an unformatted state), but none at all with Firefox. Not sure if it is a security set-up issue, or if there are some plug-ins that are required. Do I need to add user permissions, or alter the setup in some way? I was running 2008 previously, and did not have this problem.

Suggestions appreciated. I think I am most of the way there on this install, but have a few bumps to get over to get the system really usable.

Ok I have a mixed OS Network, WinXP, Win7, MDV and Puppy

Coming from the wall I have the cable broadband fed into the cable modem

From the cable modem I go into my Linksys Router (4 port wireless)

Port 1 of the Linksys goes out to my garage which right now is not used (too cold)

Port 2 of the Linksys goes to the BACK of the office where I have an 8 port Netgear hub which leads to a cluster of 6 PC's (mixed OS)

Port 3 of the Linksys goes right into my TVSERVER which is new and whose intention is to show media files straight from the net, and possibly become a DVR

Port 4 of the Linksys is EMPTY

Wireless of the Linksys connects to a Laptop across the house and a Wireless Print Server

Everything on the Netgear 8 port hub can see each other, ping each otehr and reach each other, EVEN the Laptop and the Wireless Print Server.

The TVSERVER can see a FEW of the other PC's but not all of them (the TVSERVER is XP at the moment) and can ping everything it can see including the wireless laptop.

NOTHING can SEE or PING the TVSERVER.

I have asked the Field Support guys at my office and their question is "If you plug it into the netgear can you see?"

My answer is PROBABLY, but that defeats the thought of having 1 40 foot cable and would get messy quick.

I have three machines runing Windows and Linux, like this:

1 - Windows 7 and Mandriva 2010.0

2 - Windows XP and OpenSuSE 11.2

3 - Windows 7 and Mandriva 2009.1

I have SAMBA installed and set up in all of them so that all three machines can connect to each other no matter the OS the machine is currently running (they all act as servers by the way). Everything is fine except for one thing: te connection from machine 2 to machine 1 is slow.

If machine 1 is running Mandriva (it only happens when it's running Mandriva, which means the problema must be in SAMBA) and machine 2 is running XP, and I if try to access machine 1 from machine 2, it does work, but it takes like 50 seconds to load. I mean I double click on the machine 1 icon and it takes a lot of time to load. After this wait, I can access the files and folders in machine one without no delay, BUT if I close the window and wait for several minutes, then the next time I try to access machine 1 I have to wait again.

It looks like for some reason there is a timer or something, if I remain inactive for some time, the connection kind of closes and I have to wait again.

Tell me if you need my samba configuration file.

I have a Mandriva Free 2007 machine with two network card. Durig the installation process I configured the network interfaces with two different static ip an two host name: host and host2. In the consolle the name displyed were host.

Then I decided to switch off a network card and the host name is changed to host2 that is good for me. The problem is that now I have an error in the crond application:

Dec 28 12:34:01 Host2 crond[28654]: Authentication token is no longer valid; new one required

I have this error every one minute.

Does anybody knows how can I resolve the problem?

I'm running Mandriva 2010 Spring & I 've got X11vnc installed & it works for me in that I can connect remotely to my desktop (mandriva) via my laptop (windows). I've even got it configured so it works over an SSH Tunnel, which is great. I've even found the cures to a couple of bugs that I had (keyboard shift key wouldn't work over x11vnc fixed using the -xkb switch & the screensaver would disable & instantly started again, which was fixed using the -nodpms switch).

Anyway the problem that I'm now having is that the display disconnects after a period of time (not sure how long, but when vnc disconnects & I then reconnect to the display it's at the user login screen).

If I then try & login vnc is disconnected & the login doesn't appear to work on Mandriva as when I reconnect, the display is back at the user login screen.

I did some reading up on Karl Runge's site and have used the script to find my authority file. The -authority switch looks like it is looking at the correct file when using the "x11vnc_sh" on Karl's site.

I've also set the KillInitClients=false in the [daemon] section of /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf but have now run out of ideas of things to try.

I was also hoping to install this as a service, but due to the differences of Mandriva & other linux flavours that Karl references I wasn't able to get this working using his guide.

I'm using vino and vinagre for VNC connections in my network. I am the one (ninja) in charge of monitoring people's behavior and providing remote support via vnc. However, whenever I connect to another machine via vinagre, a message asking for a password pops up in the other machine, which totaly blows the idea of secret monitoring. Is there any way of disabling this gnome keyring or something so that it never asks for pasword? I mean, the idea is that only I can access other machines using the password, and that other users do not use vnc to connect to other machines (because they do not know the password), but the problem is that the observed machines keep asking for the password to allow the administrator to see them!!

I would like to request your help with the folowing problem:

I have a WinXP machine and a Mandriva 200.1 machine. I decided to share files via SAMBA. I read the tutorials here and in many other places before installing and configuring. Everything went well, I can see the Linux shared folder from Windows and all, BUT...

It seems that, in Mandriva 2009.1, the 'sharing' tab in Dolphin's properties menu does not work. I right click on a folder , select sharing, press the only button that appears there, then it asks for the root password, and I enter the correct one, but then it just

does nothing, the button goes gray for one second, but then the window does not appear. If I choose ignore, the right window does appear, but everything is grayed out because I am not root.

I have managed to share the files via control center, but I'd like to do it from Dolphin, as it is faster that way.

I have a problem in Eclipse for accessing update sites (for plugins). I am behind a NTLM proxy.

Strangely, this proxy asks for a password while in Linux but not when in Windows…

To get around this annoying password issue, I already setup a working cntlmd proxy. I can use this proxy for mounting a remote DavFS2 share, for example.

But the issue I have with Eclipse seems to involve proxy configuration. So I decided a transparent proxy could solve this issue. I installed tinyproxy on top of cntlmd, and added the following rule to the firewall:

iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to 8888

Now, I can configure Firefox for direct access to the Internet, and display a web site only if I give this web site's IP instead of its name! I surmise that it's because when configured for direct access, Firefox performs DNS lookups using the local (intranet) DNS, instead of squeezing its lookups through the proxy and accessing a broader DNS (I wonder which…).

So my question is: How can I make all DNS lookups go transparently through the transparent proxy?

With a bonus issue: Will it then be possible not to go through the proxy for a local domain?

The NIS account server and NFS file server (as home directory) is installed in a IBM server (named ServerA).

Several PCs (named ClientA )access the accounts and home directories from ServerA.

After setting, I can use ssh to remote login to ClientA, and every thing is work.

However, when I login to ClientA locally, I found that the Gnome panel on the top and bottom of the desktop are disappeared.

Later I found that when I login to ClientA locally as some account and the account's home directory are in the NFS file server, the Gnome panel will disappear. On the opposite, when the home directory are in the local file system, the Gnome panel works normally.

Does somebody meet this problem before? Or, is there some log file about the gnome panel?

I have the following hardware configuration:

Mobile broadband <--> USB <--> PC ("Bengt") <--> eth0 <--> PC ("Shaobi")

The internal communication works fine - I can ping, see each other's files the way they are set up, see printers connected to Bengt from Shaobi, etc. Bengt can also communicate with the Internet (obviously). Shaobi is running Mandriva 2009.0 and Bengt is running Mandriva 2008.1.

I have tried to use MCC (and also manual configurations) to share the Internet connection with Shaobi, but that machine can not see anything on Internet., nor can it ping anything outside the local world. What have I done wrong? I assume there has to be some sort of setup on Shaobi to accept the Internet info, and I have been looking and looking everywhere for information without finding it. https://mandrivausers.org/style_emoticons/default/wall.gif

I have what most would consider a pretty basic system and would like to get a few tips on assigning variables to each of the 2 NIC's I have in this Mandriva Box.

This box is connected directly to the 'Inet' via a fiber connection and acts as a FQDN http and FTP server for testing purposes and at times an 'on by request' FTP server. My domain name associated with this box is: fsx-planet.info . That NIC is eth1. The 2nd NIC is assigned 192.168.0.2 (local LAN) via NIC 2 (eth0). I want to access the LAN via eth0 to connect to my FreeNAS box and other machines on that subnet (192.168.0.x). The address of 192.168.0.1 is my Smoothwall box which in-turn feeds to my HP Gigabit managed switch. At this time I do NOT have this machine (the FQDN) behind the smoothwall box via port forwarding. I just want to access the LAN via eth0 (192.168.0.2).

My understanding is that I can have only 1 (one) gateway assigned to my box. Right now that gateway is setup to access the INET via my WISP. Now....I have been assigning the eth0 NIC the address of 192.168.0.2 as stated above WITH the gateway field filled in with 192.168.0.1 (the smoothwall box). This I understand is NOT the right way to do it...as I am getting substantial LAG because I have both NIC's assigned separate gateways. I was told I need to assign a 'static route' from the LAN NIC (eth0) to the smoothwall box address so I can properly access the LAN. I do not know where to enter the appropriate information (the route) within the /etc/xxx scripts.

My problem or question at this point is: How is the traffic I want to tx/rx via the LAN side able to 'know' to use the correct (eth0) LAN NIC ?? This is were I was told I needed to assign a 'route' to point to the 192.168.0.1 smoothwall box.

I have the host 'fsx-planet.info' assigned to the INET NIC (eth1) and the host 'internal.fsx-planet.info' assigned to the LAN NIC (eth0). Both entries get overwritten with 127.0.0.1 each time I reboot. I would like to 'statically' assign those host names to each of the NIC's in a way that they don't get over-written by 'drakhost' which is the Mandriva utility that automatically assigns that info upon start-up.

Can I edit say..../etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and eth1 to include host info so it 'sticks' each time.

I just received an email suggesting I try using 'iptoute2' to allow for multiple gateways on one machine. It seems this is possible, but will wait for more input

I've tried wget with the --no-proxy (I'm not using a proxy though), --no-dns-cache, and nothing works. Any ideas? I am running wget version 1.12 on Mandriva 2010. Here is my /etc/resolv.conf:

First the theory. I've read over and over again that “TCP over TCP is badâ€, and I even think I understand why. But most of those reads were about PPP over SSH, which means a TCP network through PPP over another TCP network, if I understand correctly.

1st question: As I understand it, an SSH tunnel is simply this: SSH listens on localhost:XXXX, encrypts the data, forwards it through the SSH connection to remote:22, decrypts it, and makes it all available on remote:YYYY. Even though SSH connects over TCP, and in my case the data is HTTP(S), I have the feeling that this setup is not “TCP over TCPâ€. Or is it ?

Now in practice. I have this setup:

JBoss/machine A <---( local network X )--->[Firewall]<---( local network Y )---> machine B <---( internet )

Aim: view JBoss pages from Internet.

Considering HTTPS is already encrypted, I suppose using SSH for the tunnel is a bit overkill. Is there a more efficient solution?

My Mac computers can see the Ubuntu Computer and the Ubuntu can see my mac. But the Mandriva computer is not seen by either Mac or Ubuntu. I am on the Internet with no problems.

The network is a wired network using a Buffalo router.

Using exchange connector, I can access all my resources, and Global Adress list (GAL), but when I try connecting to other users calendars I receive the "Folder does not exist" error. Is there a solution to this?

I tried using MAPI plugin instead of exchange connector plugin but I could not even browse GAL. I read somewhere that MAPI requires samba4. Samba4 packages are available in the repos, but the packages installed on my machine are called samba - I presume that's samba 3? Do I have to uninstall those packages and install samba4, or can I just install samba4 on top/in addition to of the installed packages?

I use iwconfig command to set wireless key,but I don't know how to know the key I was setted is right.

for example:

My wireless name is "abc_test", the key is "5472547266".

and now I want to know if I was connect to the wireless net.so I use iwconfig command to set name and key,and then get ap,but I found that if I set an error key,I still can get a ap ,so I don't know how to know I have link the correct essid name net.

My set essid and key command is:

iwconfig wlan0 essid abc_test key 5472547266

I would like to use this network storage as a storage for all home files (photos, videos, music, documents etc.). I currently don't have any need for an FTP server on the internet, but I would like to keep that possibility open. The drive must be accessible in my (w)lan from PCs running Linux as well as WinXP and Vista (or soon Win7).

I have a tabletop PC (number 3 in my sig) that I could turn into a network drive. It currently has a 200GB drive with both Mandriva 2009.1 and WinXP Home (dual boot), but It's left almost unused currently. This PC is connected to a WLAN AP so the traffic will all go through WLAN (802.11g) "bottleneck". I will also need to consider if the power source is big enough and if the cooling in the case is adequate.

I'm thinking of buying two 1 or 1.5 TB drives that I would RAID for redundancy reasons. I could:

i) install two additional drives into that frame and leave the 200 GB drive and Mandriva on it as is. The additional drives would be seen as one (RAID1) extra network drive. I would use the current Mandriva 2009.1 as the OS for the network drive system.

ii) discard the 200GB drive and set one of the new drives to boot as default from BIOS. I can leave the 200GB drive in there if I would like to boot to that for some reason

Another option is naturally to buy an NAS case, but it always comes with an OS of itself and some are easier to "hack" than others. I would very much like to go with the system I know best: Mandriva Free.

Any thoughts and advice?

I'd like to learn how to set the default network card when I have two installed. I have one 100M card and one 1000M card; both are connected to their own nodes on my switch on my home Ethernet network (the switch has no control interface to my knowledge). Mandriva is automatically selecting my 100M card as my default card which seems to make my 100M card handle most of the incoming signals while my 1000M card handles most of the outgoing (which I think would be great if I wanted to ever make this computer a web server). Is there a way I can switch their functions when I know traffic will be acting in one direction or the other?

On another note, but on the same topic, is there a way to dedicate one card to one path? I was thinking the network would operate efficiently if one card was dedicated to the Internet and the other would be allowed to handle requests from my internal network; do you think my reasoning is correct or would this particular computer be better off with one card behaving as they are already (one in - one out)? I use this computer personally while two or three remote users on my network would access files and print from this computer - the remote users bypass this computer and connect to the Internet from the DHCP/Gateway/Router.

Something, though, keeps dropping my internet connection. I have been testing as best as I can, and this is the behaviour that I see: the wired desktop will connect for awhile, then drop the connection with Firefox saying that it cannot connect. At the same time, wireless connections seem to keep working. Sometimes the wireless goes out too, but less frequently. I've made another wired connection with another computer, but it shows the same problem.

I've had the cable company out, and the only thing they've noticed is a slightly less than average signal strength on the cable going into the modem. (It is apparently only slightly below normal.) The modem seems to be fine, but they said it may still have something wrong with it.

I am dual booting Vista on my main desktop. The other wired desktop runs only Mandriva 2008, and my laptop runs Ubuntu 9.04.

My question is this: is there anyway I can detect where the problem actually is? It is in the cable modem, or is it in the D-Link router? Thanks for any advice.

I thought this page was quite good in giving advice, but couldn't get it to work (my config file seems a little different from that of the opensuse one).

I did make some additions to the cupsd.conf file, but I am really not sure what is wrong with it and why I cannot connect to the printer. I have disabled firewall altogether. From my Vista laptop I can ping Mandriva system OK and I can connect to the cups page: http://192.168.254.5:631/printers/. But I cannot set the printer up in Vista (or in Mandriva 2009.1).

Oh, and I have installed and enabled sambaserver on this Mandriva desktop, as I would like to share some files later on between Mandriva and Windows. Hope this doesn't interfere with ipp printing. I did also try to get the sambaprinter working, but that didn't work either. I couldn't get Vista to print to that printer, even though I did find the network printer (samba) from the Vista laptop.

Where to go from here?

Is it possible to route C nets?

I'm trying to get the IT department to add some routes so that our lab machines get access to a server in another network segment. However they are refusing and telling me they need to add routes for this one by one, and find it to be too much work. I want all networks 192.168.X.0 where X is 100-254 to go one way and the others to go wherever they need.

Are they right that C nets cannot be routed like

ip route 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.254

ip route 192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.253

or something to that effect?

It's using a rather popular CMS, which is working fine.

However, I want to test an alternative CMS on the same server. I can put that one in a folder inside the root folder, and I can assign a DNS to it (say a free one from dyndns). I also want, if possible, to use another port for that one- say 8088 instead of 80.

Question no.1: Can I create another Apache virtual host, which will use as root the subfolder with the new CMS?

Question no.2: Is it possible to run on Apache two virtual hosts, which are using a different port?

You may well assume that I'm no techie, when coming to Apache configs- hence the questions...

2WIRE Router (not connected to the world wide web)

So I have my laptop connected wirelessly to the router and my desktop connected to the router via cat5.

I have a fresh install of Mandriva One 2009.1 on the desktop that I installed off a live CD.

I want to use the desktop as a home server for my laptop so I can store all my music, files, ect. on it instead of my laptop.

I've been reading about all this "use samba!! use samba!!" stuff and samba isnt on my mandriva, i dont think.

Ive never used Linux before and I need instructions on how to set this up...

Oh, and some miscellaneous info that may be useful:

Ethernet card: BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX

Mandriva version: One 2009.0

Kernel version: 2.6.29.1-desktop586-4mnb

ndiswrapper version: 1.55

I am new to Linux. Installed it on my home machine a couple days ago, loving it so far.

Can anybody tell me if there is anythin similar to logmein that can be used in gnome-Mandriva? I want to work on my home pc from work. Usually i use logmein on windows environment.

If there is something similar, can you point me in the right direction of installing and using it?

Directories are there, but not files!

I mount the share with autofs, but the same happens with mount, or directly with ncpmount. Example mount command:

mount -t ncp -o tcp,ipserver=SERVER,volume=VOL,multiple,uid=501,gid=500,filemode=0664,dirmode=07
75,passwd=PW,codepage=cp850,iocharset=utf8 SERVER/USER test/

(all parts in capitals were substituted).

A “find -noleaf ! -type d†in test/ returns nothing.

Stranger still: I can create and delete a file but I don't see it happen! Example: I ran “touch test/SOME/DIR/test_fileâ€, and a coworker on Windows could see the file, but I could not! And I ran “rm -f test/SOME/DIR/test_file†and my co-worker reported to me that the file disappeared! Neither command gave any error.

Edited to note that we use tunneling. I believe it is this that is causing the problem. It is as though rdesktop is not using the tunneling ip, but is instead trying to go out over the network.
