After installing mandrake 9.2 my superuser filemanger disappeared. I regard this as one of the most practical tools. The only way to manage files is by using the terminal or by using Konquerer Home. However, the last option tells me over and over again that the access to certain directories or files is denied. How do I get it back?
Thanks in advance
paCkeTroUTer
you mean its not there in Applications>> File tools>> File Manager ?
chris:b
No, it isn't in 9.2

You get it back creating a new shortcut/icon on your desktop.
Execute command is: konqueror.
Then check: run (or execute??, sorry no English version here) as different user.

If you want a konsole su:
execute command is: konsole
Check the 'run as different user'

In Gnome btw I found the neat little gnomesu, works the same way.

Thanks maatje, Can I use root as the other user?
So I did but after clicking the new icon, nothing happens (other than that the system asked me the password and the "zandloper" in the manuba)r. What did I do wrong? Also logging in as root in Konsole and type konquerer didn bring me far.
chris:b
Don'T fill in a user, just leave it empty!
And the command is konqueror (with an 'o')
Earny
It workedjava script:emoticon('biggrin.gif')
Thanks a lot!

:mrgreen:

And if you want your screensavers working (mine did not):

In a terminal su to root, cd to /usr/share, then type:

ln -s ./applnk-mdk/.hidden ./applnk-mdk.hidden

Go to the KDE settings, (configure your desktop), look and feel, screensavers, there they are!

The screensaver tip worked like a charm.

Thanks,

He he,

After a totally new install of 9.2 (I was forced to) the trick with the screensavers doesn't work anymore.
This is also true for starting rpms from the filemanager (konqueror)
chris:b
When you did a standard install I am almost sure that you are missing some or maybe a lot of kde packages. They are now separated.
Go to the MCC, software install, search for kde - and install them all (except the devel rpm's, if you don't plan to compile kde software).

Screensavers are in kdeartwork.blala.rpm
Earny
I did, but no effect. Screensafers limited to blank screen and random
chris:b
Do you have some of these:

/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KBanner.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KBlob.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KBouboule.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KEuphoria.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KFlux.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KFountain.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KGravity.desktop
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/KLines-saver.desktop

...??
Earny
No, the only items in the directory are Kblankscreen, Krandom, Krozat and Ktux. The last two items don't appear in the menu in config/kde/look and feel/screensaver.
chris:b
Ok, *my* way would be now - but its a nasty way:

- uninstall the kdeartwork ...rpm
- delete the link in your /usr/share (the link you have set, that is ...
- reinstall the kdeartwork package
- set the link again

LOL, I've nooo idea if this works.
Earny
I took the risk (well not without saving the other saving dir in my hom dir).
Lots of savers in my new dir (usr/share/<applnk/screensavers) (you may say it works. The problem is that they don't appear in KDE screensaver menu. They are simlply unfindable for KDE. The only thing I got more are lines (very boring)
Earny
I found out that most of the screen savers are also in the /usr/bin directory. These are all the files with the extension .kss. The question is how these things can de activated in the scresaver menu of KDE
chris:b
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you did :(
Earny
I first deleted the /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers directory (or better I moved the data to my personal directory in order to prevent definitive loss of data). Than I uninstalled kdeartwork after which I reinstalled it again. in the newly created /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers directory there are 23 screensavers now. However, in the kde menu (appearing after config>kde>look and feel>screensafers) there are only 3 savers visible (blank screen, lines and random). I wonder to what files these three savers referred to, so I looked for files with similar namess and whcich started with K (using Kfind). I found these in /usr/ with the extention (I mean ending with) .kss. However all 23 screensavers in the /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers directory appear there, Is this a help?
Thanks for your help (even during hours when most people sleep)

Hi again earny,

hmm, I am not sure, but I guess you tried a different way than the one I suggested - you deleted a whole dir first? I don't understand why.
And did you uninstall the kdeartwork package via the MCC?
What did you do with the symbolic link - that was the important part?
You had set the link by typing in your /usr/share

ln -s ./applnk-mdk/.hidden ./applnk-mdk.hidden

When you navigate with konqueror to /usr/share you can see this link - the name is: applnk-mdk.hidden (its not a directory)

I am a bit lost here. Maybe someone else can can be more helpfull than I ?
Earny
It worked. The only thing I needed to do was to uninstall kdeartwork and reinstall it again. I discovered that all the savers used are in applnk-mdk.hidden/screensavers. Whenever you download another screensaver with the extension .desktop, you only have to place it in applnk-mdk.hidden./screensavers. applnk-mdk.hidden may not be a directory, but it more or less behaves like that.
Thanks for the help and regards.

A note for great helper, ANNA and others.

Open up Konqueror and click on VIEW then click on SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS.

Go to /usr/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/screensavers.
in there you will see a .directory, open it with Kwrite and you will most likely see a text something along the lines of
[Desktop Entry]
Name=ScreenSavers
Icon=applications_sections.png
Type=Directory
Name [eng_Gb] = ScreenSavers

This entry is wrong and needs to be edited to read PRECISELY as follows:-

[Desktop Entry]
Icon=go,png
Type=Directory
X-KDE-BaseGroup=screensavers
Name [en]=ScreenSavers

Upper and lower case must be correct as shown.

Save the changes and reboot. All yor screensavers should now reappear in KDE.

Cheers and hope this helps everyone.

PS this only applies to Screensavers that have got lost and not to screensavers that have not already been installed.
AussieJohn
It shoul d be a . (dot) and not a , (comma) between go.png in
Icon=go.png

cheers. John

AussieJohn:

Many Thanks !!!!

I had tried several fixes for this problem, yours was the only one which fixed it.

I've taken the liberty of passing it onto some other sufferers at the thread below:-

Cheers, Mate...
