Hi all

Since I'm using Linux, I've always use KDE. IceWM is on my server and I don't like it that much (not for everyday use at least). I like to clic, this is why I have stick to KDE 'till now. So the question:

Which desktop environment should I emerge now? Don't just say 'whatever' and clic 'Submit'. Please provide some explainations as for why I should use 'whatever' environment instead of KDE.

Thx for helping me ...

gnome is a nice gui, just as gui as kde, but a litttle "macish" looking. That is, it has a smoother graphic appearance. Now, for something really gui but interesting in a different way, enlightenment. It plays differently than kde, and is not as cluttered. But, kde is a real windowish de! I have kde for my main, but I play with gnome and enlightenment all the time.
bvc
DE? There's only 2 (G & K), so you don't have a lot of choice here  If you're going to consider ice and E DE's and you're not wanting ice then gnome and E are you're only 2 choices. Gnome is all I use anymore. Why? Cuz I don't like anything about kde other than it's usually stable and everything usually works. Gnome can be a little sticky, especially since it's being completely re-worked. I'm excited about the end result but devel is sloOoow, and gnome won't be what I want it to be til probably 2.6  I've always thought gnome was lighter, faster, smoother. Although it's not really lighter on resources anymore I still feel it's faster and gtk smoother than qt. It's much easier to customize as well. Don't want nautilus to draw the desktop but want icons? Tell nautilus not to, and use Esetroot for wallpaper, idesk for icons, and use Endeavour tongue.gif (no, I use nautilus) ...or something else.

Ok thanks guys for your input. I really appreciate it.

Now look at what I would have to emerge to get Gnome up and running .. this is awesome.

CODE
bash-2.05b# emerge -p gnome

How come Gnome is so big? ... wow.. I'm a newbies to this. Didn't know Gnome was so big. I'm gonna search the Gentoo forum about a way to install the strict minimal. I don't want to compile unnecessary stuff...

Thx

MOttS
bvc
Gnome isn't any bigger than kde, heck I think it's smaller. Just has a pkg for almost every app where kde has one big pkg with 10 apps. You're not going to take a lot off because of deps. BTW, it's because of there being so many pkgs that gnome is extremely hard to compile from tar (not to mention all the typing/time), with a end result of bug city.

Oh really? .. I don't want to contaminate my system man! What's wrong with Gnome 2.2.1? Is there anything I should know before starting to compile?

Thx

I'm referring by tarball ..../configure | make | make install.

I don't know about gentoo...but I'll be finding out soon (prebuilt cd's)

I know a lot of gentoo'ers use gnome so it can't be all bad.

I know for a fact that emergeing KDE takes much longer than Gnome, so it wont be that bad.

I use Gnome mainly! It feels faster and is PERDIER!

Hi MottS
Gnome later, skip it, gtk "blurs(tache)" display, not cool !
My main GUI is Kde just love the "signets" on desktop.
However
export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86
Check out :
/usr/portage/xfce-base
/usr/portage/xfce-extra
i.e. xfce4
Light, small + fast compiles.
Ohlala definite contender, and soon more to come I read.
Just might cookup/find a "signets" solution but
won't part with konqueror, whatever.

i was going to suggest XFCE 4 aswell, but final isn't out until august 02nd (i think) so you will need to wait for it to come up in portage.
sud_crow
Hey,
I like Fluxbox, im currently using it on my LFS, becouse its light and fast. Also, its almost no-dependable so, you can have it without almost any dep-problems.

Also as mentioned, Enlightenment its pretty good, actually its the "prettiest" of them all...
the CVS version is the pre 0.17 wich is supposed to be a DE from now on.
Also XFCE is going to get the DE title in its next version, for what i read.

Anyway, for heavy GUI i like KDE, its very complete, and i like loading all kind of applets and extension bars...

And like i sayd, when i want something fast and light, Fluxbox... Also there are plenty of plugins and such...

Oh wow.. XFce4 seems nice from the screenshots on http://www.xfce.org/ . It will be out August 3 though. I think I will wait 'till there. KDE is usually in the portage tree the same day it is out .. hope it will be the same for XFce4.

sud_crow, thanks for the offer with FluxBox but to me, this is too much like BlackBox. I compiled BlackBox last January when I first installed Gentoo. I used it a couples of day while KDE was compiling (haha). Since then I reinstalled the whole thing and the only DE I have on the system is KDE. I'm looking for something else .. but not Blackbox/Fluxbox.

Thx guys!

Ah yes, xfce4....forgot about that one  I used it in Libranet2.8, heh, the beta never gave me one single proband it is very nice/fast/light....uses gtk.
vande198
XFce4 does indeed look awesome, and I can't wait to give it a run once the first full release comes out and I get back on T1 at school. Anybody been fooling around with the betas and RCs?
vande198
Also, I wonder what might be the best webbrowser for XFce. Would that be Firebird or some GTK2-based browser like Galeon or Epiphany (or do they require too many Gnome libraries)?
bvc
As I said, xfce4 uses gtk, so any browser except Konq and Opera are fine, though all opera needs is qt with qt deps being kdelibs.
manly
For a lighter setup, I would give WindowMaker a try. It's not a DE, but it's really pretty and functional as well. I'm using KDE with it configured to act like windowmaker. I can't live without using the mousewheel to scroll desktops :-)

--Andrew
vande198
But if I'm not mistaken, doesn't Galeon (and probably Epiphany) depend on some gnome-specific background, e.g. Bonobo? How much would such libraries and apps bog down my system as compared to the relatively independent MozillaFirebird under XFce4?

a lot if you don't have much in the way of resources, and hey, the fewer the better.....less room/chance for bugs and deps, when upgrading.

State of the project

XFce 4 is under active development. It's now in the testing phase which precedes the final version release.

Here is current XFce 4 development roadmap :

20 July : RC2 release

6 August : RC3 release

XFce 4.0 release : When we will be satisfied with current RC smile.gif

If you were looking for informations about XFce 3, which is current stable XFce release but will become obsolete soon, you will find them on this page.

Well, I'm gonna have to wait more. Was it August 3 the date they were supposed to release the final version? Seems it has changed.

So I'm emerging XFCE4-RC2. Here is what I have to install:

I put the size (manually) to the right of the package. As you can see it shouldn't be long to compile.. almost no package with 1MB+. I'll let you know what I think about that..

i just installed it....really like it. don't think i'll be going back to gnome anytime soon :!:

it looks alright in the screenshots.

I may try it, but I do use desktop icons for certain things... I did use XFce 3.x for a short while, before I settled upon Gnome...

But then, I really love my current layout.

Not bad. The thing is I installed Gentoo in like April and use KDE since then. So KDE suit my needs #1 with this installation with all the icons, KMail, KWrite, Konq with all my favorite etc... So I find it hard to switch to another desktop, find where everything is and configure it for my needs. Right now I'm back in KDE. oops.gif Will give it another try soon.

BTW, when one left click on the desktop, you can chose "Web Browser". Now Mozilla is selected. How do I change it to Firebird?
