Full Version: Static when playing sounds
MandrivaUsers.org > General Help > Hardware
jonny2gunz
I just installed Mandrive 2008 Spring on my system after I installed a new mobo (Biostar TForce TF8200 with integrated GeForce 8200) and the sound is working but terrible. It has a lot of interrmittent static. I've tried switching audio drivers around without much effect.

Can anybody offer me some help please? I've been a long time Mandrake/Mandriva user and this is just driving me nuts.

now the bad news you will have to try all the following models below

in the file /etc/modprobe.conf you will find a line like this:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

substitute auto with the following models and see if it works for you, you will have to reboot each time

(or close all audio apps then

rmmod snd-hda-intel

change the model in modprobe.conf and

modprobe (ie enter the command modprobe in a console))

My modprobe.conf file looks different. I don't know if it's messed up from all of the driver changes I was trying, here it is:

then just add the line at the bottom

like so:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

one more tip in kde arts uses the audio device and make it impossible to rmmod the sound module, so disable it...

(@lex, even 20 reboots is faster than downloading anything from the realtek servers....)

I gave the realtek download a try and ran the installer -- sound still has static. ffi, is it worth going through the steps you mentioned or is that redundant at this point?

i would try it, just to give it a go

I gave up and just pulled a separate sound blaster card out of an old machine and disabled my on board sound. I also pull an old separate geforce 6200 card and am using that in place of my on board 8200 because the 8200 generates a bunch of nasty artifacts when using compiz-fusion.

So much for the little upgrades I was hoping to get with this new mobo.

I really appreciate the help, thanks again.

I think it sounds more like a defective Board regardless of it being new.
I would suggest returning it if possible and replacing it.
On board audio chips are cheap, that is why they are used.
I say that even though I use it myself. biggrin.gif

Cheers. John.

Maybe trying a newer kernel revision?
Your lspci lists too many "unknown devices".

I would recommend trying a different kernel version as well. I have major problems with the sound on my Jetway J7F2WE Mini-ITX m/b on Mandriva 2007.0. It got so bad I bought a Turtle Beach USB sound "card" to give me useful audio.

When I upgraded to 2008.0, the sound was perfect.

You could use numerous NEW Live distros as tests to find which one works best with all of your devices.
