After struggling ot figure out how to get my cd to mount to install unreal tournamnet, i was greeted with the following when I tried to play the game:

How do I correct this? I need it in newbie style. I just want to see how it runs on linux as I'm starting to convert over from windows. Also can you download the ut2k3 demo for linux on windows? I have a dsl line at work (windows) and dial up at home.

I cant give ya too much help with UT seeing as im still having problems with it myself but as for ut2003 ive got it and it runs GREAT in linux you should be able to grab the demo over here http://3ddownloads.com/Action/Unreal%20Tou...6%5B1%5D.sh.bin

what kind of video card do you have? (grasping at straws...)

Nvidia- I have the lastest driver working (Tuxracer works, well in root anyways.-if I try to run it as a user it tells me I dont have permission)
I had tried mandrake 7.2 when it came out, loaded ut no problem, but it wouldn't run, so this was my way to see if I could now make the switch over to linux, so far I'm happy with how everything else runs(but what do I know Im a newbie!!! )

are you still running 7.2? because that's _extremely_ old, and may have something to do with your problems. I would try to get 9.1...

I think there is a bit in the nvida faq/readme about the permisions problem, not sure if that will help with ut, i dont have any problems with it in 9.1 tho,

the install is corrupt.

No i'm using 9.1 now, i'm was just going to use ut to see how far mandrake has come since 7.2.
if the install is corrupt should I reinstall? It took forever to get the cd to mount and install. I dual boot, can I install it in windows and copy any of the files over?is this possible??would it fix this install problem? or should I just pony up the money for ut2k3?

id just go out and buy yourself a copy of ut2003 its got the linux installer and such on the third retail cd - http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/GoGamer.sto.../View/001UNRT23

Do you have supermount on? That may be part of this problem. If you do, disable it and try again.

Don't think this is possible as the executable files are different, it may be possible to copy some data from a windows install, but not all of it.

I say you should do this anyway, even if/when you get your UT install working, ut2k3 is still a great game. Better graphics, better engine(IMHO), and it's an all around great game.

Yeah a buddy of mine had ut2k3, but sold it on ebay. How do you turn off supermount(I'm a newbie here)?
does quake3 or Unreal2 run very well on Mandrake9.1?

(from memory, so bear with me)

Go to Mandrake Control Center -> Mount Points -> CD/DVD/CD Writer (whichever you want, I would do all that apply to you) -> Choose options and click OK; uncheck the supermount option and check both of the other options. Click ok, done, when it asks if you want to save the modifications to the fstab, say yes. Do the same for any other cd-rom drives and floppy if you want.

Then, on your desktop, right click and choose create new -> CD ROM device. Choose your icon if you don't want to use the default. For the mount point, I think it's the third tab on the top, choose the mount point of your cdrom from the list (I think /mnt/cdrom by default) and choose ok.

After that, you can right click on this new icon and choose mount to mount the disk. Then open a console and try to reinstall ut. Give it a try and let us know.

Supermount only causes problems with a loki installer not being able to find the CD. UT has been installed, but something is corrupting the files.

I had a problem back in the 8.0 days that was similar to what is being described, disabling supermount and reinstalling fixed it.

Grandal have you tried running UT in root? I only ask this because you mentioned that tux only runs in root. I was thinking that maybe you have a permitions problem with the vidio some how.

Yes, same result, I tried that after it wouldn't run as user. Last night I switched from KDE to Gnome and Tuxracer ran fine.Which desktop is better for gaming by the way? does it really matter?But I still couldn't run ut. I will reinstall tonight after work. Should I uninstall ut first (and how?) or reinstall over top of it (like you can do in windows).

Ok guys, I still need help.Over the weekend, I was able to find a new ut-install-436.run file and I was successful in disabling supermount. Once agian the install seemed smooth but in the end I received the same error. (should I uninstall, and how do you uninstall?) I did some digging around and decided to load all of my libsdl drivers since they mentioned open-gl support. Once agian Im using mandrake 9.1, I have a 1.53gig athalon, 256megs of ram, Nvidia 64meg gforce(Lastest Linux drivers installed and functioning). All I originally set out to do is show a friend that Linux could run ut just as well as Windows, but maybe not 9.1??
Is there something I maybe missing here? a driver, a file, a setting??? I'm a newbie with linux and so far its been a good experience, except for this. I thought about buying ut2k3 but now I wonder if it will run. thanks for the previous help any any other you can give me.
