Can any ADSL users clear up this query for me. I know nothing about ADSL but from what I've read so far, it should be pretty straightforward to get my friend up and running again.

He has bought an Edimax AR-7084A adsl router:

My question is, will using this router will eliminate the need for him to use his usb adsl modem? He's on Pipex.

I would say so. You should just need to enter the User ID and password when you first attempt the connection.

I am not familar with Pipex in particular. I am just making a general statement regarding ADSL.

The quick answer is yes it will replace the USB modem and should be better for it. Setting up the connection depends on the provider but there should be plenty of information at Pipex. I did notice it was also a router, but once again should be straight forward to set up via the web interface especially if there is only one computer involved. Rest easy there should be no surprises. smile.gif

PIPEX and most broadbands in the UK are PPPOA - therefore just providing the username and password, configuring for PPPOA should do the trick. Normally the VPI/VCI numbers are 0 and 38 for the UK from what I remember (0 and 35 in Poland), so just need to make sure these are set correctly.

Cable networks are different, so probably PPPOE - as I bought the wrong router once in the UK smile.gif
