OK 2 PC's both dual boot XP/mandrake 10.1. I have a working network when both PC's are running XP, but when one PC is running XP and the other PC is running Mandrake or when both PC's are running Mandrake I DO NOT have a fully working network.
In the mandrake to XP networks and the mandrake to mandrake network I can ping by IP address successfully but I CAN NOT ping by PC name. The IP addresses are "static"? on both PC's with one being 192.168.0.1 and the other being 192.168.0.2 . I am not certain what to set the "DNS server" addresses to and I seem to be getting differnet opinions over what I should set as DNS server addresses.
I would like the names of the PC's to be, for 192.168.0.1 Mk3, and, for 192.168.0.2 Mk2.

Curiously from the PC running XP, currently this one i.e. Mk2, I can see and read the contents of a 'shared' directory on the PC running Mandrake

BUT

I CAN NOT see anything of the XP PC on the Mandrake PC. I attempted to set up and or use Samba but its use 'crashed' when it couldnt find 'the other' PC by name.


Going from what I can see on XP, XP setup a network by the name of Mshome, Mandrake set up a network by the name of Mdkgroup.

I am obbviously faling to understand something in the network setup process and would be grateful if some one would walk me through it.

Isn't 192.168.0.1 reserved for the router? And why use Mandrake 10.1 and not 2008?

Are you sure you don't have the same IP on both machines when running mandrake (IP conflict)?

Also in XP you can see which dns server you should use by setting dynamic IP (recieve automaticly) and checking "ipconfig /all" in cmd. (Start --> run --> cmd -- ipconfig /all). Alternativ in mandrake as root "ifconfig" in a console window.

"why use Mandrake 10.1 and not mandrive 2008?" ----------I have 10.1 on a dvd. I'd have to buy 2008 and money's tight at the minute, the download would take me 3hr+ for each CD, I have had a look. I'd prefer cd's as I only have 1 dvd reader and swapping it about is becoming tiresome.

I see one 'problem'(is it a problem?) immediately the broadcast address is wrong..............now that's interesting on the mandrake pc I can ping 195.168.0.255 ........... trying to ping 195.168.0.anything times out on the XP machine

Download Mandriva One 2008.1. It's a single cdrom. It will run as a live cd or you can opt to install it from the desktop. You can add the repositories (sources) later to give you full access to available extra software. 10.1 is really old (and probably no longer supported), you may have a smoother experience using a more current version.

Also it might be better to leave things on Auto discovery until you get the networking sorted, you can assign fixed ips after.

Thanks and ultimately I will get an up to date OS but that wouldnt necessarily teach me anything, solving this problem would, and I tend to learn more by fixing things than have them go smoothly

Ahh the problem has become irrelevant, the older mo bo just threw up its head in disgust at the abuse and died, the remaining backup pc's run pentium II and it isnt worth the bother of trying to network linux on them. I'll stick with a microsoft network.

I've been trying for a week and I haven't much hair left but there's less steam coming out of my ears now as I have found a Abit KR7 mo bo in the attic. So Ian if you have some answers to the problems I have encountered I'd be grateful to 'hear' them.

To ping by name you would have to add to /etc/hosts all the machines - or alternatively run your own DNS server for your internal machines with external addresses being resolved by a DNS forwarder configured in your DNS server. However, if you're a beginner, just adding the machines to /etc/hosts on all machines is enough and quicker.



Make sure when you configured samba that you have the same workgroup configured between Windows and Mandrake, so that they can be accessible easily enough. You can also use lisa as a Network Neighbourhood type browser - or just open konqueror for KDE or nautilus if you're using Gnome and type smb:// to gain access to browsing the possible machines to connect to.

I believe that helps answer your problems.

Thanks Ian, unfortunately the Abit board wasnt working reliably so I will have to dig out and even older PC to try the network on, your help is appreciated though.
