Is there a way to add a shortcut for a new tab in the area shown in the pic below? Although it is easy enough to click file/new tab, it would be even better if I could make a little shortcut to it = ]

I don't know if that's possible, but Ctrl-T is your friend

I don't know a way to add such an entry there, but you can easily add one to the main toolbar. Right-click on the main toolbar, select configure and in the main toolbar "available actions" on the left, you'll find "New tab". Add it anywhere in the toolbar that you want it.

Also, if the tab bar is already visible (it may be configured to disappear when only one tab is open), you can double-click an empty bit of the bar to open up a new tab, or right-click on it and select "new tab". Might be slightly easier than using the menu.
