I want to get a usb cable to allow me to download photos from my Motorola v3x cellphone. What I want to know is: will 2006 powerpack automatically recognise it when I plug it in ?
My digital camera is recognised straight away without any prompting but all the usb cables (for my phone) that I have seen come with a cd that is windows oriented.
Is anyone able to confirm auto-recognition for my phone?
Many thanks in advance.

Don't know for Mandriva 2006, but 2007/Spring and 2008 all recognize both my RAZR 3i and 3xx without problems, they show up as USB-Devices, I can copy data from/to them just like any ordinary USB-Stick

btw. even in Windows I do not need the software, since the Phones are handled like a standard USB-Device (I can access them through the file-manager), the software is mainly for calendar and mail synchronisation.

I have a Motorola V3i, and all I have to do is using a common USB to miniUSB cable. It's instantly recognized ( usb_storage ).
There's also a Linux program for Motorola phones, named Moto4Lin
It isn't terribly usable, though.
Rowan
Thank you all. That satisfies my needs and it is as I was expecting. The only other way for me to get photos to my pc is to email them to myself but the cost of that is horrendous - NZ$60 for 6mb. Ouch!!! For $8 I can buy a cable and use it over and over.
Once again many thanks.

You can also use a Linux compliant bluetooth adapter at your PC... they are quite a few of them, and they aren't particularly expensive.
Rowan
Hold everything.
I have just got a usb cable, plugged it in and, lo and behold, my 2006 Powerpack does NOT automatically recognise my cellphone. I know that the cable is working because my phone is charging up via the usb connection.
Is there some program that I must activate or set up some synchronisation system to make it work ?
Thanks

I can't tell for Mandriva 2006, because it's some time ago I used it, but with 2007/2007.1 and 2008 I had no problems connecting my 3i and 3xx, they showed up as usb-mass-storage devices, only with my new v8 Mandriva 2008 insists that it is a camera huh.gif , bluetooth works fine with 2008, although it is a bit slow
JonEberger
it isn't automatically recognized and mounted for me in Fedora 8. i run a v3xx.

p.s. Moto4Lin is painful

This is actually becoming more interesting to me. When I hook my Moto RAZR V3xx into my PC and issue /sbin/lsusb I get

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 22b8:6402 Motorola PCS

which signifies that it finds it. Woot! Then when I do a ls /dev, I see that there are now entires labeled usbdev3.2_epXX where XX specifies that there are in fact 4 entires: 00, 01, 81, and 82. However, when I try to mount these (probably stupid I know) I get the return that usbdev3.2_epXX (00,01,81,82) is not a block device.

So what's up?

Jon:
Have you had any progress with this? I just purchased a AT&T RAZR V3 and I am interested in getting photos off of the phone before my wife uses all available space!
JonEberger
Hi daniewicz,

i unfortunately haven't even spent any more time on it. let me know what you come up with.

OK

I think my first attempts will involve using Windows 2000/XP and some software from ModMyMoto
AussieJohn
Hello Rowan.

Considering how rock solid Mandriva2007-Spring is, why not upgrade (preferably fresh install) since you have a much better chance of getting it to work. 2006 really is very very old and a lot of the phone technology was hardly around then.

I see you are in Kiwiland so if you have a problem getting hold of 2007-Spring or even 2008, such as no ADSL, then I would be happy to post you a copy of the dvd for free.

To do that just send me a PM (Personal Message) containing a Postal Address and it will be quickly be done.

Cheers. John.

ModMyMoto suggests P2kCommander for Windows. This will sound irrational, but the download website (http://s5vi.vxxxstuff.com/) has so much bling that I am apprehensive.....

From a linux point of view, the program of choice looks to be moto4lin. However, this software does not appear to support the V3xx from what I have read so far.

I think I will take a break from this project and get back to it in a few days. All of this seems unnecessarily complicated. unsure.gif

if you have the data stored on the microSD card in the 3xx, there should be no problem accessing it on windows (no extra software needed) it will show up as removable media, the same goes for mandriva 2007.1 and 2008, you can access everything on the microSD card through your file manager (at least for me this worked), v8 is recognized in windows as removable media too, only mandriva still insists that it is a camera (still haven't tested this with other distributions).

Under ArchLinux the RAZR V3i I have is appearing as a regular removable harddisk named "Motorola V3 series music player".
No custom udev/hal rules needed.

To update regarding the moving of pictures off of my RAZR V3xx:

I decided against P2kCommander for Windows. This phone hacker software just made me wary.

On the linux side, it appears that moto4lin does not support the V3xx.

I am ashamed to admit this here, but I have given up and installed the motorola phone tools software. blush.gif Moving pictures to and from the phone is easy.
lavaeolus
Are the photos stored on your phone or on the SDcard ? I wonder why it is not accessed as removable media like any ordinary USB-Stick (at least in Windows it should work this way). I did not need phone tools for accessing the pictures on my phone.
daniewicz
The phone does not have a card. I verified this by removing the back cover.
lavaeolus
but there is a card-slot ? (just curious, maybe there are different 3xx versions out there), that might be the problem, you can somewhere specify how the phone connects to your computer (modem, storage-medium, if it uses telephone storage or card). Sorry but please don't ask me where to find this in the menu of your phone, I know it's there, but I can't tell you the place exactly and I haven't my 3xx here for looking).
daniewicz
There is a card slot in the back of the phone that is empty. So it does appear that I could expand the phones capacity by buying and installing a card.
lavaeolus
if I recall correctly the phone is normally set to connect as modem-device with the computer, but there is an option that it connects as storage device, if it is set to storage device you can either chose to access the internal phone memory or the slot-mounted card, then you can access it directly with your filemanager (no extra software needed). at least for me it worked this way

i'll second this. on saturday i bought a 1 GB microSD card from Sam's Club (for 14 dollars with the adapters for other SD card slots). I changed the setting to storage device, formatted the card and gave it a name. now when i plug it in, it automatically gets mounted. i already have ppt presentations on my cellphone.

i don't know if this will work without the microSD card.

Jon:

In an earlier post, you indicated you have a v3xx. Where is the storage device setting you speak of? I cannot seem to locate it on any of the menus from my AT&T v3xx.

My current status is that I am able to download/upload to my phone from Win2K using the Motorola software. This is adequate for my needs. However, I am curious about the storage device setting you speak of. Recall that I do not have a supplementary card like you do.
Rowan
Back again. Firstly AussieJohn thanks for the offer of a dvd or 2007 or 2008. If I decided to take you up on your offer I would need to think a little - I want to keep my home directory intact and only work on the os.
My wife just bought me a usb bluetooth with the intention of making life easier - and also more portable. I plugged it in and tried to use my cellphone to find it - it is found but unable to connect. I went into MCC to check that it was detected and it is but it needs configuration. The three sections are: ignore, reset and isoc. I have no idea what parameters to put in these three sections and any advice would be appreciated.
PS the bluetooth unit is from Dick Smith Electronics and states that it will work on any system with kernel 2.4.? and above.

If I do

Main Menu->Settings->Connection->USB Settings

the only setting to change is "Default Connection" and it has three options. They are

1. Data Connection
2. Memory Card
3. USB Printing

I just select Memory Card. I hope this helps.

Jon
daniewicz
Hmmm. My phone settings are identical to what you described, and this is the default setting since I have not changed it . The difference between you and I is that I have an empty card-slot.
JonEberger
Perhaps the card is the issue. It mounts easily now since I bought the card (on my Mac, my Fedora 8 install, and my WinXP).
daniewicz
Thanks for the response Jon.

As I indicated in a previous post, I am content using the Motorola software under Windows on those few occasions when I need to offload pictures.

Most of this offloading involves my wife and her pictures. She is more comfortable using Windows anyway. rolleyes.gif

Hey guys
pls look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhxRqiEnaxk ( no one has try google("p2kcommander linux) ? )
Not completed yet, but under heavy development, and partially usable even if your phone is p2k05 as V3xx.

Hi Folks,

So after way too much tinkering, I figured something out. I got the phone to be recognized under Linux for a modem using KMobileTools. You can check out this blog I wrote about it.
