Ultima On-line...

Anyone done it successfully??? Trying to find a way to run it because I can't figure out for the life of me how to install and use wine. Thanks.
JaseP
DOlson is going to probably tell you to post your concern in the Emulation section of the board, since to my knowledge, the only way to run Ultima is through wine/winex.

Some people are touchy about keeping this sub-forum about NATIVE games only (I'm not one of them, however).
Grimey
Oh sorry, I have no clue what I'm doing so for all I know I could be posting in the wrong place.

Just trying to figure out how to get it to run....
DOlson
Actually, there was a Linux port of it out there, and there was a SourceForge project to recreate it, IIRC.

I posted about this not long ago in the Emulation forum.

JaseP, thanks for reading my mind ahead of time.

From what I understand/remember the Linux native is next to impossible to find, and of questionable,.. erm,... legality (perhaps why it's so hard to find).

And, DOlson, it's not mental telepathy,... it's learning from history...

Amazing what turns up when you've searched on Google, isn't it?

That's all there is to it right now. If they don't work, and I don't anticipate they do, then either you can attempt to run it in Wine or WineX, and when it fails miserably, you can crawl back to Windows, or give up on the game.

If you want role-playing, check out Neverwinter Nights. I don't know if it's your style or whatever, since I've never played Ultima Online, but lots of people seem to like it.
Grimey
Yea I've been to that like a million times and I don't know what to do with that, that's the problem that I'm having. Not to mention that I'm running on a free shard not on OSI so it's a different login.cfg file and older client. So I guess I'll have to go with Wine, thanks.

And NWN is alright...not that great tho, reminds me too much of Diablo which was such a terrible game. UO I guess is more addicting, lol tongue.gif
JaseP
And you have to pay for an online subscription... no?!?! I never will play games that require a monthly subscription,... ever. I want to buy the box, and play the game, and never have another expense associated with it unless there is a sequel.

I love NWN. I finally have it running in Linux and think its the greatest. The Beta 4 runs better for me in Linux than the final release did in Windoze. Now, I'm pining away for Knights of the Old Republic, which is based on the NWN engine...

If you love both Role Playing and Star Wars,... you'll love KoTOR. I'm not terribly encouraged about a Linux port however, since the game is comming out on EcchsBox first, and you know what a juggernaut Micro$haft is... But since it is based on a re-vamped NWN engine, there is always a possibility. And perhaps they don't want to say if there will be a Linux port due to the fiasco around NWN release.

I completely agree with your sentiments... Pay Once, Play Forever. I did buy Tribes 2, for real cheap though, but it does seem to have some sort of single-player stuff in it (training or something). Aside from that, I don't really buy games unless I can play it without an internet connection. And I don't think I'll ever subscribe to a game... It's just wrong.

NWN rocks for me, and you can get so many mods for it... It's nice.

I'd like the Star Wars game, but when I asked someone from BioWare on IRC, I didn't get an answer... Someone else who was in the chatroom said that the question had been asked before, and that the answer was Microsoft has exclusive rights to the game - so it will be Windows and Xbox only. We may as well forget all about it now, and concentrate on rallying for their next non-Microsoft-controlled title, which has been announced, but no details disclosed. It sucks, but that's how Microsoft works.

They could always release an unsupported Linux beta... as nothing more than a technology demonstration sample... I'm sure M$'s license agreement is not THAT specific. Remember, the M$ license agreement should only include EcchsBox, not any other release, unless LucasArts bound up putting in with EcchsBox in some exclusivity agreement. LucasArts doesn't need M$. The Star Wars franchise could thrive on any platform (read: console). ST: Ep II was rendered on Linux machines after all...

The fact that they are being tight lipped about it seems to me that something is up, or else they would simply come out and say that the title is being developed exclusively for M$ platforms...

you are both off-topic and out of order!

Haha it's all good. But I DON'T pay a monthly subscription, so I'm not sure where that all even came from...I bought the box and play for free, where did you pull the monthly paying thing from?
JaseP
Ultima Online is an online game for which you must buy a subscription. They may give you the first 30 days are for free, but after that, you have to pay.
Grimey
Wrong...OSI Ultima On-line you buy the game get 30 days free then must pay 10 dollars per month. If you go to www.santiago.havagame.com you will notice that you don't have to pay a cent to pay except for the cost of the game. biggrin.gif

methinks Grimey's in for a rude awakening at the end of the monf.

...*scratches head* Now I'm confused what was that about?
DOlson
There are server emulators for UO, so you can just use those......

I assume that the site you linked to is a free server that you can force your UO client to connect to...
Grimey
Yes that is what it is, I payed for the game now I play for free. It's on a Sphere server that is completely customizable. I've been playing for free for 3 years now.

There are FREE Ultima shards out there such as Sanctuary Shard www.sanctuaryshard.com or Medieva www.medieva.org. Medieva is down at the moment. There is also another one called Draspha.

As for the Ultima client these links might help:

Seeing as you don't know much about CVS www.rpmfind.net and www.rpmseek.com are great sites to find a RPM of something, i use them heaps.

If you are looking for games, you can find many easily at http://www.icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php

As for your question on Wine, does it support NTFS, i don't think so, it may, but i heard somewhere it doesn't.

If you want to simplify your install of Wine you can get Winesetuptk. It simplifies the configuration heaps. An RPM and some instructions are available at http://digilander.libero.it/winehqitalia/

Hope this helps, Good luck

Nopers. That's what is becoming Era, and it's a single-player-only game.
