Receiving "unable to create modem lock file" when trying to connect with kppp. I have installed martian drivers for an Agere winmodem. Permissions for /usr/sbin/pppd are set to -rwsr-xr-t. Device name is /dev/ttySM0. In kppp config, ttySM0 is not listed, so linked it to /dev/modem. With the martian drivers, modem connected fine in Suse, but cannot make it work in Mandriva. Anyone have any advice?

Unless this is a machine where several users log on at the same time, it's probably safe to dispense with the modem locking altogether. It's been a while since I used dialup, but I seem to remember there is a 'nolock' option you can specify somewhere in kppp - it might be worth giving this a try.
