You don't need to download or install anything to have mp3 or ogg playback.

1. In the panel, in the run command applet, type: kmix

Play with the settings.

2. Click up a terminal, type: lspcidrake -v

did not try terminal suggestion yet but used mcnlive as live distro on another pc [compaq laptop nc6000] and sound works fine

will try the terminal suggestion on my dell desktop [dell 4600i] and let you know how it goes
