Use the installer, the other files barely work. (btw if you were to use them you would use both.)

Cool avatar razor.
Okay, I finally downloaded the installer from icculus. Can't seem to find an installation guide though.

Yeah, I downloaded it too, but when you go to run it (on Mandrake9) it keeps looking in the floppy after it asks for the Quake2 CD.
Then it doesn't recognise the CD and gives up.
Don't work for me.Maybe try getting these which DID work for me.
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2
Get the one called
q2-3.20-x86-full.exe
Please let me know if it works.
Also check out this page for help.

I have tried i_o_quake2-0.15.run and icculus_org_quake2-cdless.run.
The first one tries to install Quake 2 in my PC but fails. It does not seem to copy the data files of the CDRom. But mabe I am running the install wrong.
The cdless installer simply wont run from my PC.
I can't seem to find install instructions with either package. Does anybody know of a link with install instructions for these installers.
Back to Wolfenstien I guess.

ral,
You should have icculus_org_quake2.run from the link that I posted above.
As root
sh. icculus_org_quake2.run
The installer will ask again for the CD but will install after that.

ral;
I thought you said that did not work? Yes you did say that, I just looked.
I'm only trying to tell you what worked for me.
The icculus_org_quake2.run did not.
You might try compiling it from the source, which also worked for me, it's on the same link that razor posted.
It's a little more complicated than RPM, but it does have all the instructions included.

Icculuses Q2 installer worked great for me, and the game started up fine, but once I configured everything and went to run the game, it kept crashing on me or locking up the desktop manager. I think I will give the other file a shot.

Yeah, I got the source from
http://icculus.org/quake2/#download
and look at the readme/install files FIRST!
It's sorta wierd how to install, but it does work.
It will tell you to get
q2-3.20-x86-full.exe
from
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/
That is one cool game, IMHO.

Got it to work for me.
Log in as root. Used the cdless installer.
Open a console and locate the installer.
Type: sh <filename>.run
A dialouge box comes and and select begin install.
After that follow the read me text.
Also get the update and unzip it. You need some of the files there to update your install. The game runs file even without the update though.

That floppy problem is probably because of supermount...
I know that other games wouldn't install without disabling supermount (UT for one).
