Grim Fandango and ... Ghost's n' Goblins and BomberJack!

BTW: I found a CD with 500 C-64 games for PC for 5 bucks. I will install that on my girlfriends PC (She still uses WinME. smile.gif) and see if I am still able to play some of those funny games.

The best game included there: FROGGER!!! biggrin.gif 2thumbsup.gif
foot
Battlezone 1 (from 1998) wasted far too much time and money on that game. Never really seen anything since in the first person strategy genre that compares and the follow-up was disappointing.

my first console games were on the atari with space invaders, asteroids, frogger, and pac-man. they were fantastic. on the compy, there was some weird bass fishing game that my cousin had that i loved. but we also played sim city all the time. i also play doom and the original wolfenstein, but they always made me sick after about 2 hours. on a mac i also played this game called spectre and pong.

good times.

I could probably go on all day. I've owned any number of PCs since the 8086, spent many hours in arcades and I had an old Atari system with Tanks and really old stuff that I bought second hand when I was like 9 years old. A friend of mine had a ZX and I also bought an old Tandy 200 laptop that was already ancient when I found it. I hand-coded some games on there, but soon lost interest lol (reading through bible-thick reams of code and hacking them in before playing - and then losing them - is not my idea of fun).

I also had a NES, a Master System, A Megadrive (known as Genesis in America), A Sega Nomad and then I skipped the 32 and "64" bit phase and went straight to the Playstation 1, the the GBA and then the PS2, all the while upgrading my computer and playing on that too.

I've been a gamer since I remember. Now I'm restricted to my Powerbook and my PC (when it's not in a million pieces) and I'm seriously considering getting a Nintendo DS Lite... when the Wii comes out I will get either that or an XBox 360. I just wish I had more time for my oldest hobby smile.gif

Ooh ooh - Dune (the strat game)... and and Doom I and Return to Castle Wolfenstein and....
ramfree17
UFO: Terror from the Deep [1]
UFO
The Incredible Machine

i once played a sharewaregame that called somewhat like 'gearheads' which was pretty addicting. the premise was you have a chessboard like playing field and then you unleash a variety of wind-up toys to get to the other side. each toy has its own strengths and weaknesses (great power but slow, fast but too easy to push, moves in zigzag pattern, etc.). my brother and i had a blast making pileups in the middle of the board.

anybody know what exactly is the name of that game? gear and head reveal too much hits on google. :(

[1] I like drilling lobstermen. twisted.gif

ciao!

For me it goes something like this -

DooM
DooM II
Final DooM
Quake + SOA, DOE Mission Packs
Quake II + TR, GZ Mission Packs
Quake III Arena + Quake III Team Arena
Descent
Descent 2
Wipeout 2097 (You may know it as WipeoutXL) Perhaps the best racing game EVA

I find it hard, well actually, I find it impossible to play any game that isn't in the First Person view, not just Shooters, any game, be it a racing game what ever, if it's not in First Person View I won't even consider it. I've tried lots of games, Half Life series, Unreal Series, Far Cry, and on and on, but they don't last long, I don't even bother finishing most of them, I always find myself returning to the Quake and DooM series of games. They just have the feel, the gameplay, the fast action that I like, too me nothing else comes close, they give me what I want.

Of course I would put DooM3, DooM3 Roe, and Quake 4 in there, but that may not fit in with 'Oldies' theme

pffft, people with gaming consoles. what a waste! back in the day I only had a computer! no consoles were allowed in my house, and i prefer gaming on a computer anyways tongue.gif

I'm sure there were/are quite a few cool games available for console that aren't available for PC though... ohmy.gif

neddie
On the BBC: Revs, Thrust, Elite, Jetpac, Citadel, Monsters, Chuckie Egg
Archimedes: Interdictor (fantastic flight/attack sim)
Arcade: RType2, Sega Rally
PlayStation: Wipeout (the first one, not 2097) especially linked up 2-player, Bubble Bobble (like Frozen Bubble), Micro Machines
On the PC: Just the usual Doom, Quake and Descent, although there was a patch for Doom which turned it into something out of the film "Aliens" which was verrrry scary...

the big issue for us was that i was a kid and mom and dad bought me video game consoles. they didn't cost $2000 at the time and were far more movable. even when they bought a computer, they didn't trust me on it for about 2 years. they thought i'd break it. silly parents. in retrospect, i can't blame them.

Console gaming just feels right. Relaxing on the couch is a more logical place to game (which is for relaxation... with me anyway) than sitting upright in an office chair.

I've always played games on anything that can do it - computer, console, arcade... even on my iPaq, mobile phone and iPod... but a console is the preferred platform.

Some more I've remembered:
Commander Keen
Duke Nukem
Final Fight
... I had a fighter game with robots on my 386... can't remember the name... it rocked.
Loom
4x4
California Games
Skate or Die
Search for the King
Macross
Top Gun
Prince of Persia

This may show my age, but I used to enjoy arcade type games on my PC including:

Raptor
Flying Tigers (I and II)
Overkill
Epic Pinball

All are playable using dosbox on linux, but the speed of some of them is too slow to be enjoyable. The mindless shooting was very relaxing.

Some windows games that were fun include:

DX-Ball
Full Tilt! Pinball (cutdown version was in some versions of Windows)
Shanghai Dynasty

I also enjoy playing some of the arcade games that are emulated under MAME (galaxian, gyruss, 1941, puyo puyo, truxton etc) , and of course I own all of the ROMS. ahem. The Metal Slug games were a lot of fun but are not playable under recent versions of MAME.

Not advisable when the keyboard and mouse are used. It's ok relaxing with say a joypad, complicate things and you really need to sort yer posture out.

Anyway between consoles and PC's both have their merits.

I would rather be playing a First Person style or strategy game on a PC, but absolutely hate doing so on a console, sorry but the whole mouse and keyboard combo beats a joypad ands down in this instance.

But when it comes to your traditional beat-em ups/action/platform/sports games consoles win hands down. Okay yo can get a joypad/stick for a PC, but IMHO, they don't compare in quality terms with say a joypad on a playstation, or a megadrive, etc.

I totally agree. I have tried playing FPS' on a console and it just doesn't work, except on the DS where you can use a thumb-stylus to look around, works very well smile.gif

I stopped enjoying strat games so much a while ago but I still like FPS' and I love World of Warcraft - couldn't play that on a console though, need a keyboard for chatting and stuff.

The best control pad I've used imho is the Playstation dual-shock controller. It's a pity they've dropped that design for the PS3 - yet another dumb decision by Sony. The Xbox 360 controller is nice and I can't wait to see if the Wii lives up to the hype.

Back on topic: I have MacMAME loaded on my powerbook and I have found some rad old ROMS. Been reliving Ghost & Ghouls, Final Fight, Bubble Bobble and some of my other old arcade favourites 2thumbsup.gif

Ok, there's been many good games, but really on top were:

- Elite (THE best game for many, many years.)
- Silent Service I+II (Aaah - the destroyer's coming!)
- Civilization (*Real* strategy, no bustling action game on maps AKA "real time strategy".)
- FATE - Gates of Dawn (Biggest CRPG I've ever seen or bought with only very best awards, but economically a loss - sad story.)
- UFO - Enemy Unknown (Addictive from the beginning even before having the first small squad.)
- Ports of Call (Are there still people playing computer games together, i.e. not online but in front of the screen?)
- Pinball Dreams/Pinball Fantasies (Why there's no good pinball game today?)
