hi bob.
i'm not sure why APM/ACPI don't work, but i have a few questions.
1. is your hardware pretty new? if so, apm/acpi may not have supported that hardware (potentially completely wrong on this) yet. This leads to the problem that your install is using really old software. It's actually Mandriva now, and version 10 is quite old. If you're using a new version of Ubuntu in comparison, you could be comparing two VERY different Linux distributions. By now Mandriva has probably stopped supporting and updating that version of Mandrake at all. A new install with a newer version of Mandriva is probably your best bet if you're looking to stay with the Mandr(iva/ake) Linux products.
2. are you using a laptop? if so, newer distros are way more laptop friendly than they have been in the past. hence another reason to go with a newer version. plus, seriously, updates in Linux are key to functionality and security.
Good luck,
Jon
