I'm a complete beginner to Linux so thought I'd pick the easiest one to install in Mandrake. All I really want to do is set up an FTP server with ProFTPd. Can someone tell me whether its installed by default because I cant see it. All I can see when poking around is something called gFTP which cant be the same thing can it? I've run the updates and when I go to the install software all I get is the options for installing anonymous logins for ProFTPd. What I want is the main program but where is it and how do you install it?
Appreciate your help
Thanks

Try going into Remove Packages and searching for proftpd. Also go and see if the configuration files are there. Type "locate proftpd.conf" in the terminal and it'll tell you where it's at, most likely in the /etc/ directory. Then once you find it you should be able to do all your configuration there. If proftpd isn't installled go to Install Packages in the Control Panel type thinger. To start proftpd go to your teminal and type "service proftpd start" if it's not already up and running.

Hi, I've spend the best part of two days trying to get my head around this and am starting to despair. I am a complete beginner to the world of Linux so thought I'd install the so called easiest distro. What I have is the downloaded 3 discs which seem to have installed fine. All I want todo is get the FTP file server working.
My first question I supose is Is the program ProFTP there by default in Mandrake 10 or do I need to download something else. When I do that command loccate proftpd i see its there in the directory its supposed to be but how on earth do I go from here and get it up and running?
I'm really despertate
Thanks

Maderic - it causes confusion if you create 2 threads on the same subject, so I have merged them, and moved the thread to the networking forum.

It can depend on whether its "stand alone" installation or run from init.d Try this from a consol:
service proftpd start
If that doesen't work, try:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd start
If you have problems setting proftpd up, you might consider an easy and secure alternative called, "PUREFTPD" you can get it here

What DE are you using? I spend most of my time in Gnome, and use GProftpd as my frontend. It was really easy to set up, and once you have it going, you rarely need to mess with it.
*EDIT* I'm relatively new to Linux also, and this was the first FTP server that I had set up.
