Hello friends,

i´ve finished my first live-Mandrake-distro. The main language is german (like my own, so sorry for my poor englich...), but I will add an international profile in english soon.
It fits on a mini-CD (~200MB), Desktop is XFce (Mac-OS X-look), Kernel 2.4.25 (2.6 created many problems on my test-machines).
I see it as a mobile desktop. So it is not a system-rescue-disc.

Software-List:
-----------------

File-Management: - Xfe (very nice), MC
Office: - Abiword, Gnumeric, Gcalctool, XPdf (maybe change to GPdf), GXedit
Network: - Mozilla Firefox, Gaim, Balsa, gFTP, LinNeighborhood, RfbDrake)
Multimedia: - XMMS, GXine, Grip, Gnome-Toaster
Graphic: - Sodipodi, GThumb
Games: - Frozen Bubble (yeah!!), XPuyopuyo, Quadra, Supertux, Rick Dangerous
...and of course: the complete Mandrake Control Centre

First screenshots you can see here:

This evening I want to add a little website and next days hopefully there is the Iso ready for download.

Oh, forgot something important (at least for me 04.gif ): the name: MAX

And one question: I´m searching for a nice little WYSIWYG Html-Editor. I tried Ginf, but it hangs many times. So is there another useful one ?

Greetings from Germany,
Nico

Willkommen.
Welcome to the board.
The screen shots look cool, hope you can do that international version soon. 2thumbsup.gif 2thumbsup.gif

Check out Quanta BE 2 http://quanta.sourceforge.net/

It does pure HTML and WYSIWYG

I have virtually no experience in HTML and its what I am using for my site. I started with Nvu but quickly switched to Quanta Bleeding Edge. I at one time even installed Linspire just to try Nvu. again quickly ran back to Mandrake

Yippeah, Nico found our board juggle.gif

Welcome, looks very nice.
kernel 2.4.5 finally, so you couldn't solve the 2.6.x problems?

I forgot to email you that MAX is already the name of a Spanish Linux distribution:

Hi Anna,

yes I found it... headbang.gif

Hmmm maybe I should use another name. But MAX was so cool... I'll see. unsure.gif

Html-editors: Thanx for your answers, but I know all of them and they are much too big. My own first joyce would be Mozilla Composer or NVU, which is based on Mozilla. But as I said, much too big. Another thing is that Quanta is based on all the stupid KDE-libs and tools (...I like KDE, but not in my live-Distro. twisted.gif ). So no way to take it.

The app has to be max. 10MB when installed.

@anna: No way! It should have wysiwyg.

What about the name "SAM" ?
I think there is no SAM-Linux out there.

IMHO, by hand is better.

But, Add mozilla & mozilla composer as the browser and editor, and together it should be under 20mb. And with it it will bring Mozilla Mail which is pretty decent and Chatzilla which is a basic yet effective IRC client.

It is XFce 4.05.

The whole thing is 56 MB.... But maybe I can do some changes. Yesterday I replaced Xpdf with Gpdf, which freed 11MB. Today I will try to remove Balsa and Firefox and incude the Mozilla Suite. It would make me happy because on my desktop I use Mozilla Composer. It would fit perfectly my needs. headbang.gif

We´ll see...
Darkelve
Cute!!

Definitely gonna try it. I've always wanted a small LiveCD with only XFCE and a few basic apps (Firefox w00t.gif ) on it!

I'm so touched now ... cry.gif
nico
Sorry Darkelve, no more Firefox now.... Some things have changed:
Removed Balsa, Firefox. Added the Mozilla Suite: Browser, Messenger (Mail), News, Addressbook, and: COMPOSER!!! icon_mrgreen.gif

And another file-manager: ROX. Just as an alternative... cool.gif

And removed Sodipodi. Its now THE GIMP 2 !!!

But another problem remains: the name: I´ve to choose between NIX and SAM. What do you think? icon_idea.gif

I don't like NIX. It reminds me of the ugly nix-hounds in Morrowind. Also in Dutch, 'Niks' (sounds the same as 'nix') means 'nothing'. So I'd go for SAM, or something else.
iphitus
bugger, you should have put inkscape in instead.

And. If you can, make it support firewire CD drives and I will be a VERY happy bloke.
nico
Now my first try of the SAM-Live-CD is finished. You can download it under

sam.hipsurfer.com

It's only in german, but a international version is in progress.

And remember: It' s my first try on live-CD' s!

Here just a quick feedback on SAM 0.1:
(They'll send me again to Munich (ggrrh), will be away til june,19)

Well done, Nico.

Problems and errors:

- While booting: error: "mount fs type sysfs not supported by kernel"
Solution: disable the service 'netfs' in MCC

- *Major* issue: the German nodeadkeys don't work, so you are not able to type: \ ~ @ | and so on.
This a known bug in mklivecd !(for many non US keyboards) There is a temp workaround, don't have the time to explain, please browse the livecd-users list (Nora's postings !).

- MCC --> software install/uninstall: you managed to break your urpmi database! Delete your urpmi sources, all! Rebuild the database. - Before you build your iso: as root, perform: updatedb

-- Software: starting Linneighborhood: error, does not come up.
-- Software: ROX, when starting error: can't find Icontheme blah blah

Tips:
- Disable the following services or check if you really need them on a livecd:
crond, fam, hotplug, keytable, kheader, netfs, netplugd, partmon, random, syslog

- add a start message/startscreen to your livecd, that's a text/asci file, with certain limited dimension, you add this file with the option: --bootmsg /home/$user/name.of.file.here (this is an example) Take a look at the attached example, and keep exactly the dimension when you edit the text, otherwise it will scroll out of the visible screen while booting.
nico
Hi anna,

thank you very much!

That' s right. I only left out the /var/lib/rpm and /var/lib/urpmi to save space (around 100 MB!!). I don' t think this is a problem in using SAM as a live-CD. But I need them for myself on my installed SAM.

Fixed. There was another: the Firefox-link in the desktop-menu. Also fixed.

It' s not ready yet, but I'm working on my own start-screen. But thanx for the tips!

Hi, I'm a french user of mklivecd.

I have built a french mini live-cd based on kde.
What about this error message "mount fs type sysfs not supported by kernel". I have disabled the service 'netfs' but this message appears again while booting.

Regards
nico
Its a problem of mklivecd. The actual version works with kernel 2.6. Sysfs is a filesystem only supported by kernel 2.6. The mklivecd-scripts build the fstab-entry around sysfs (if I did understand what someone told me). So if u use kernel 2.4, the error occurs. But thats no problem because nothing will happen.
If you want to change this error, you have to change the mklivecd-scripts. But dont ask me how....
marc
Thanks a lot, nico.I will try with a 2.6 kernel.
And what about no sound when i'm root in KDE ?

Looks great! I see you use XFCE and Rox-Filer?

Is there an English translation or version of the LiveCD available?

Edit: woops, sorry, I should learn to read the posts before commenting... ohmy.gif I see there's an English version as well.
