Hi all

PC no1 - Win ME dual boots with MDK10CE (I've got an official 9.2 still to go when this is resolved)

PC no2 - MDK10CE

Trying to connect to internet with speedtouch 330 (yes, all these weeks and I'm STILL trying)

From the dual boot windows partition, I've copied the file alcaudlsl.sys to a floppy and renamed it mgmt.o

In an effort to get PC no2 connected, I need to install the mgmt.o file into the Speedtouch directory.

Using the GUI I open a window with the mgmt.o file
I open a second window using the pathway /usr/share/speedtouch

I try to 'copy' or 'move' the mgmt.o file into speedtouch directory, but I get the following prompt

"Access denied
could not write to /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o"

I presume this is because I attempted this as a user but not as root.

can anybody advise how I can install this as root - I'm still new, had tons of problems trying to get this modem installed and I'm unfortunately not up to speed with comamnd lines yet. I'm hoping to network three linux machines at home, using a standalone with Shorewall, but I'll still face the exact same problems (alternative is to buy a modem/router) so any kind words will VERY GRATEFULLY be accepted.

Still in hope...

Cheers.

I assume that you are using KDE as your desktop. So, run konqueror as root by doing the following:-
Keypress 'alt+F2' this brings up a dialogue box into which you enter "kdesu konqueror" (no quote marks) you will be prompted for your root password. Konqueror will then lauch in superuser mode so that you can copy your mgmt.o file to the required place.

Give up on the USB and use the network cable with the modem. Its much easier and in the long run will be worth it. Apparently some people have had speed increases using it too.

vdemuth, yes you're right, I'm using KDE. Thanks for your reply, I'm gonna try this out, I didn't know about super user.

iphitus - I so want to give the USB up man. You say ditch the uSB and use the network cable with the modem - are you saying use network cable with the speedtouch? If so, how - network cable conenction is a bigga fitting and won't fit the socket on the modem. Or do you mean give up the uSB and install another modem? Sorry if this sounds stupid wub.gif

vdemuth THANKYOU! at long long last, I have managed to connect to the internet, using Mandrake with the Speedtouch 330.

However, I then found it doesn't support Shorewall wall.gif Still, 1 major hurdle has been cleared - onwards and forwards
