Hi board,

I cannot get sound under SuSe 9.1, which is a bit strange since the 9.1 LiveCD detected it perfectly. I also get a few weird errors in Yast:

1. When starting the sound detection module, it says:

QUOTE

The number of currently running cards doesn't match the number of configured cards in your configuration files. Try to restart sound system?

Choosing yes or no does not seem to make a difference.

Then it correctly detects the soundcard, nforce Audio (but says 'not running') and when I want to configure it, in the last configuration step it says:

QUOTE

An error occured during installation of 82801BA/BAM AC`97 Audio.
The kernel module snd-intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded.
This can be caused by incorrect module parameters including invalid IO
or IRQ parameters.

Any ideas??

Seemed like all that was needed was a reboot of SuSe (after installation it went to post-installation and then straight to a login, no reboot. After I rebooted the next time, all was OK.)

glad to hear that you're up and running. i still can't get the LiveCD 9.1 to boot, so i'm waiting for the real 9.1 to go onto the mirrors.

has anyone heard when 9.1 will go live on FTP?

had same problem upgrading via ftp from SuSE 8.2 to 9.1
AC'97 had worked in ALSA mode with 8.2 before.

SuSE suggests to remove kdemultimedia3-mixer. Do it!
After rebooting ...
... system crashes. But seems due to an overriding of GRUB over the initial LILO.

System repair won't work, upgrade does not fit anymore.
So, everything has gone. Restart at zero.

Lesson learned: ALSA support for built-in sound chips is buggy in 9.1 (driver, mixer, configuration). Wait until Suse delivers an update.

well, i have had no luck with the Suse 9.1 LiveEval CD - I havent been able to get it to boot on ANY computers.

so I mirrored the FTP site, planning on doing some network based installs. it figures, just as i am ready to start tinkering with the net install, my 9.1 Pro DVD arrives in the mail as part of Novells Linux Tecnhical Resource Kit. So I install 9,1 Pro, and configure it to do daily system updates. both before and after running the updates I run into a number of problems, including

1. dead sound
2. inability to detect the high res modes of my monitor
3. lockups when attempting to resize the display
4. keyboard mapping errors
5. failure to detect a multi display installation.

in some respects, Windows is starting to look good....

Windows looking good?

sounds like it's time to try another distro...

I haven't got problems with it. But then, maybe I got lucky cuz my hardware is all "made in germany", as I fond out recently.
