This may be a bit cheeky but does anyone know of an open source firewall for windows?
So far I have been unable to find one but I wideally would like one that can be used on both windows and linux.

Hmm.. that's a tall order, an open source firewall for windows.. hehehehehe
Anyway.. there is such a project.. but not sure how good it is
http://sourceforge.net/projects/firewallpapi/There are a couple of more located in this link, just go to that link and go to the firewall section

tried several of them they seem to be definct web sites, which is a pity. Tried macafee but there is some kind of conflict with my other software, kerios almost wrecked my computer, sygate wouldn't uninstall completely which i find annoying, looks like I will have to go back to zone alert which seems the best.

Try Sygate personal firewall I know you can get the free version on Tucows.com
I use it on all my windows machines and I have never had a problem with it.

Tried sygate but there seemed to be no facility for upgrades. I will probably go for the whole kit and caboodle but was experimenting first to see which i liked.

If you have an old PC sitting around gathering dust, look into:
IPcop or
Smoothwall Both are opensource and provide some of the highest quality firewalling available for free!

Id also suggest pulling the old 486 out of the garage or find one at a school fete for less than $20AU, if ya lucky there could be a pentium or sumthin, then set it up with Smoothwall or one of the other suggestions of capnkirby.
Whatever you do -- DONT USE NORTON PERSONAL FIREWALL
its terrible, my father has it on his computer.

I've used zone alarm for windows firewalling and it seems fairly good. It's not open source, but it is free.
