Full Version: Re-install on new disk

Good evening everybody,

I have man 9.1 and win xp on a single 80 gb disk. I partitioned it using partition magic 8, and gave linux 10 gb and left the rest for windows.

And, it works great, and has done since the spring.

However, I've recently stolen a 10gb hard disk from work, and it strikes me that it would be cleaner and more hygenic to have linux on its own disk. I think I can also get my hands on a DVD of man 9.2, which will have more stuff to play with than the 2 cd 9.1 I originally installed.

The hookey disk is installed and working (fat32 formatted). I'm comfortable with re-installing Linux and using PM8 to remove my old linux partitions and give the space back to windows.

What I'm not comfortable with is getting rid of LILO, so that my puter thinks Linux never existed. I just want it to boot straight to windows, so I can do my thing with PM8.

I confess that there are pleny of LILO threads here, but no-one seems to have done what I want to do. I've searched, but please correct me if I'm wrong and point me towards the thread.

Any help, as always, greatfully received.

Cheers,

Tox

Boot from the first cd, hit F1 at the splash screen, type "rescue", and choose the option to restore the mbr. That'll do it.

As root type # lilo -u and say good-bye to lilo. This will not only remove lilo, but it will also reinstall the XP boot loader. I have done this several times and it has worked everytime.

Thanks a lot gentlemen.

Either solution sounds good.

This is a great board. One of the best.

Thanks again.
