What if SCO succeeds in discrediting the GPL, and the courts rule it is worthless? Does this mean that everything we hold dear will be lost?

They won't and they can't, so don't worry. They case is pretty much dead, the only people that have not realized that is SCO themselve.

IMHO SCO never had a case.
They are manipulating the juctice system for profiteering.
Every new case just pumps the shareprice up temporarily and the directors sell.
