nVidia driver -> direct rendering: No [solved]

I have my nVidia-driver installed correctly, everything works, glxgears and even Quake3 Arena.

BUT:

Doom3 doesn't :(

I have an nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 (Abit Siluro) with the latest drivers (at least, the were the latest last week)

Does anybody know how to turn on Direct Rendering?

As root, type "nvidia-settings" in a console. You will be presented with a gui that has nuts and bolts adjustments. :thumbs: I also believe you will only have available that which your card can do.

Well, I've done that now. But no luck.

By using both the

    Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so" # 3D layer
   Load "glx"

lines, I still get GL-Extensions in Quake 3.

But nothing changed in my output of glxinfo.

And Doom3 still ain't working :-(

I forgot to say, I've had Doom3 working under mdk 10.0 without any problems.

I did no different now than I did then, except for the first line of the above post.

I still don't really understand the problem. I mean, glxgears works fine, no complains. Same goes for Quake3 Arena.

I must admit I really have no idea what this "Direct rendering" does, I'm not even sure it really is the problem, it's just something I caught up searching the forums.

I also know my son has an ATI card and his glxinfo does say he has Direct rendering enabled. (He runs mdk 10.1 too). Doom3 runs quite good on his machine (although he has to keep the resolution down to 640x480, but that's no different from what he had to do when he still used winblows)

try changing:

    Option "DPMS"

to:

#    Option "DPMS"

that is, comment it out.

 

Direct Rendering basically gives the job of rendering the screen (it's contents) to the graphics card, where as normally your X server renders the screen. It's only used when running 3d graphics programs, IIRC.

Well, tried that too now...

Didn't do a thing. But I was wondering. Is it enough to restart my X-server by running:

service dm restart

as root?

Or should I reboot my complete system for these changes to take effect?

I solved it using the nVidia forums. I'll give the solution so all can use it. Even if you don't have problems, you should do this, it will speed up your graphics to over twice it's speed!

 

If you're output from glxinfo looked somewhat like mine before (especially the difference between the server GLX and the client GLX, you should run this script:

Note these 3 parts:

direct rendering: Yes
and
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.3
and
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx version string: 1.3

I now have over 3500 frames/sec with glxgears, whereas I had only about 1500 before running this script!

Strangely enough, Quake3 ran before it, Doom3 didn't. But now Quake3 has a much higher framerate, as does tuxracer!
