I managed to follow the directions on downloading and compiling MPlayer from the Ubuntu forums. I got it all working except there's no sound. I got clear video but no audio. I'm also using gxine and vlc and xine, I got audio and video from them, but not from MPlayer. I even recompiled the player and codecs twice, but to no avail. I've tried every combination of audio codecs in the MPlayer prefs, but to no avail. I am about to give up, but I really want to use it because of all the rave reviews it's getting. devries Posted January 29, 2005 Report Share Posted January 29, 2005 If you don't have a /dev/dsp running it as root won't help. :) What dsp do you have? /dev/dsp1 or dsp2 etcetc. Try with mplayer -ao oss:/dev/:dsp1 (or 2 or 3 whatever you have) (That is if you are running with oss. If it shows in lsmod it is means the module is loaded (translation: the driver is installed) Forget about /dev/rtc (real time clock). You don't need it. The error is can't find /dev/dsp. devries Posted January 29, 2005 Report Share Posted January 29, 2005 When you say you tried every -ao in mplayer are you sure you tried -ao esd? :) Try that. Else do (as root) fuser /dev/dsp. (Alsa is your sound architecture. you can only use -ao oss when you are using oss.) You have to build mplayer again. This time just do ./configure (just use the default settings. You'll be fine with them.) Then do -ao help again to see what options you have. Hopefully alsa is one of them. Good luck. edit: libindustrial would be part of gtk. Not needed for mplayer. Forget it.
