  1. First off, the support I've been getting here the last two days has been phenomenal. I've asked loads of probably really stupid questions, and I've gotten lots of very patient answers. But I think I've figured out the bane of my existence, the cause of my problems: Right. I'm using a laptop, with Drake 10.0, KDE desktop. I'm trying to get power management working. I've tried enabling acpi. Now when I turn on my computer, it gets stuck on "looking for new hardware". And if I turn off looking for hardware thing, I lose my mouse. (generic optical USB). So I dumped everything, and re-installed, advanced mode, and got the following error: There's somethig wrong with this file: mkisofs-2.01-0a27.2mdk.i586 Do all these things have something to do with eachother? Wouldn't bloody surprise me. Here's the deal: Help me out with this, Come to Bournemouth, and I'll buy you a pint. -demonic
  2. Ok! I think we're almost there! I need to install ACPI stuff or something now, I think.... Thanks for all the help!
  3. All I have in Power Control is the EnergyStar thing, for my screen.. No plug thingy anywhere...
  4. I have NO idea what I changed, but now when I turn my computer on, it goes through all the normal boot stuff, and then when it gets to "looking for new hardware" it just stops. However, if I turn it off and turn it back on and do failsafe mode, and then load KDE, it seems to work. I'm using KDE on Mandrake 10.0 official, on my laptop. Can anyone help me? Can I disable the looking for new hardware thing? I'm not planning on gettng any, anyhow... -demonic (Brand New User)
  5. I can't get check.sh to do anything. I'm brand new to Linux, and not quite sure how to do anything. I tried it in a terminal window, and it said command not known. Then I to right-click it and it did sod-all. Help? -demonic (EDIT--- Nevermind. I figured out how to run it.)
  6. I'm the only one on this computer. (It's my computer!) Do I still have to log on as root?
  7. Hi all! Brand new Linux user here. Not by choice, but I accidentally deleted Windows and can't find my install disk. Needed a new hobby, anyway, and so I'm going to give Linux a try... But anyway, I keep finding references to urpmi, but apparently i don't have it on my computer. I've tried using it from the command line, tried the whole "help urpmi" thing, and it says "bash: urpmi: command not found". Do I have to install it? BTW, I'm using Mandrake 10.0, with the KDE thingy for my pretty desktop. Thanks in advance! -demonic [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  8. I'll worry about my ATI drivers later, I think... For now, though, I can't find that applet. It's not on my taskbar (though I did find a nifty little weather thing!). I did a search on my 'puter, and it couldn't find the file anywhere. Let me tell you something, this whole getting-rid-of-windows thing has turned into a headache. But I'm having fun, so sod it, let's keep trying. Thanks for your help, anyhow. it's much appreciated. -demonic
  9. I can't find that energy management. I found one that's all about turning my screen off, but nothing about batteries.... Your beer is in the post, anyhow... -demonic
  10. Right! I buggered my Windows and got rid of it, in a fit of drunken rage. I installed Mandrake 10.0, with the KDE desktop on my Asus A2 laptop. I have NEVER used Linux before. Ever. So I have NO idea what I'm doing. But I need to have some sort of battery monitor. I was out using my computer in the library, and all of a sudden my battery died and my computer turned off, no warning or anything. Does Mandrake even know I'm on a laptop? So yeah, I need help putting a battery monitor on here. I'm sure one of you lovely people could help me... :-) Also, I could use some help installing new graphics driver. I have an ATI Radeon mobility 9600 card, and would like to update my drivers. All the games that came with KDE are messed up, graphics-wise. Hope someone can help me! (Actually, could you come over to my house and just fix my whole computer? It would probably only take a couple hours, and I'll buy you a beer.) -demonic
