  1. I WAS AFRAID YOU WERE GOING TO SAY THAT . THIS MAKES ... I THINK THE 5 TIME
  2. Did the reboot> That worked. Did the different mirror, but it said that I already had them. Do I need to uninstall and do it again??? Thanks, Ron
  3. OK I downloaded all the updates from Easy Urpmi for 10.1 OFFICIAL. Probably did it wrong because It said Installation Failed.some files are missing, then the mirror sites I used followed by you may want to up date your urpmi database. Anyway when I rebooted, I ended up with 10.1 Official. Things are a little goofy but I will cross that later. I did urpmi ImageMagic. It said it was already there. I opened MCC to find ImageMagic. Software> Install. Typed in ImagicMagic. It found 3 things ... all documents I think. It would not let me down load the abiword " due to unsatisfied abiword[==2.1.7]". Not sure what that means ,Other than "YOU AIN'T GETTIN IT!!". Tried the other two. Could not do it as when I put CD 2 in hdc it would not read the CD in the drive. I had the same problem when I first down loaded Mandrake 10.1ce. I had to put it in the hdd drive. Also sound does not work in hdd. It worked before I down loaded 10.1 Official. Even If I get the documents. I still can not find the ImageMagic program to install just the info for it. Of course even if I could find it not sure how to install. Now I went back and typed urpmi ImageMagic and it said it urpmi database locked. Have messed up again??? Boy, I do not know what is going on.I must have locked the workstation somehow...human glitch. I rebooted because Rosegarden locked up. Now just for grins I did urpmi ImageMagic. It came back with The following packages contain ImageMagic. ImageMagic ImageMage-doc.So I did mcc again with the same problems as above with the cd drives. I do not know whether it is a hardware or software problem. I am thinking software. Thanks Ron
  4. I spoked too soon. Just when I thought I had it all done. Adelphia cable went out. I was right at the end too. Oh well I have started all over again. I need to anyway as I only had 5 GB set aside. It now has 10 Gb. That should be plenty for now. I have another question. At Easy Urpmi [ I thought it was a mystical web site for so long, because I could not get it to open ] I clicked on :Penguin Liberation Front, and jpackage. Was I supposed to add them too??? Also what does this mean and what am I suppose to put in the box or do I leave it blank??: Prefix to be added to each media name (optional): ?? And am I supposed to checke this box?? : Use compressed index, much smaller than normal, with less informations. OK After I did all of this. It said Installation Failed.some files are missing, then the mirror sites I used followed by you may want to up date your urpmi database. I thought I had done this??? ALSO tHE FIRST TIME IT DID IT, I WENT BACK TO easy urpmi AND CHANGED MIRROR SITES, BUT GOT THE SAME MESSAGE. Have I done something wrong??? Thanks, Ron
  5. Wen all has finish, How do I get out and back into the desktop? Thanks, Ron
  6. OK . I played with digikam and it and the Gimp drove me crazy. It did see my camera and let me down load the images, but would not let me put them into a folder I saved for them??? Then neither would resize the images or shrink them down to a size I could use to upload to ebay or my web page. I know I hit every button on digkam with no luck. I went to their web site and it show all kinds of things that I could not get the program to do. Maybe I am missing some plug ins or something[ could be operator error] did open up a the terminal [myname@localhost mds63]$ urpmi digikam-plugins bash: urpmi: command not found [myname@localhost mds63]$. I probably did that wrong too. Gimp was the same way only a whole lot more intense. I know that was operator error. So I went to the ImageMagick web site. This looks to be what I want. How do I get it??? Remember I have never done this before. Is there a How to some where for this? I know with windows you click on the down load button, it puts it on your desktop as a .exe. You click on that and it loads. I know that it is not that way in linux and I have really been dreading that I would have to try and do this. I have already messed up 3 times so far and have had to uninstall and reinstall. I do not know what is going to happen with this one as I read in one of the post that you could put more than one distro and windows on a hard disk in any order as long as windows was first and the boot loader would see all of them. I put windows ME first along with all the programs I need for it on about 5gb, [ boy was that fun] That left me 10 more GB'sThen I deleted the messed up M 10.1 ce. Put on Ubunto. Booted and Ubunto came up fine. Then M 10.1 ce again. When I booted back up it only saw linux, safe and windows. When I clicked enter on linux it booted M 10.1 ce. No ubuntu to be found. I belive I have bit the big one. So although I am not afraid of trying different things , I am tired of screwing up and having to start over again. Which I see that in my near future. I do not want to shut my computer down till I learn how to down load programs. I figure this will save me a few headaches. PLEASE Thanks, Ron I even found a way to screw up my avitar
  7. bvc. urpmi I think you are right. EZ urpmi I have no problem opening other web pages. I can't open it in windows or mandrake or on any other computers I have. Desktop Environments (DE's) I would suggest using gdm as your display manager, In the Mandrake Control Center>System>Display Manager you can choose your DM I open it. It gave two choices. One was KDE and the other was XDM. I checked it. It went through a set up and came to Welcome to localhost. It asked for Login and password. It let me type in my user name, but not my password. I believe I have screwed the pooch. Thanks, Ron
  8. I am new to linux. In fact this is my first week. Please go easy. Do not assume I know anything. OK, here goes. I do ebay. I need to know how to get the jpg's that my camera [ I have an Olympus C-3030] puts on a smart digital card on my computer [without using windows programs, I already know how to do it with windows programs]. I have a usb cable that hooks up to my camera and I have a card reader... one in one of my computers and one that uses a usb port. Then I need to know how to find the files so I can use a program to resize them. I also need a program to do the resizing. After that I need to know how to find them so I can upload them to ebay or my web page[using some kind of ftp program...not sure if linux has something simular ]. Is there a how to for this?? I used google.com/linux and the form search with no luck. Surly there is a photo buff out there who knows how to do this. I know I can't be the only one who wants to do this. If there is someone close to Port St. Lucie, Fl. That would be willing to walk me through this, I would be very greatful. I used to run dive and fishing charters and could swap info for info. Thanks Ron
  9. bvc, Thanksfor the help. I opened a terminal , typed su <hit Enter> <type root password> Hit Enter urpmi --auto --auto-select It said Unknown option: a Do I need to go to "Easy Urpmi" and do something there first? I hope not as it is still down. Also very strange, I just turned on my computer and instead of opening in Gnome like I had checked in the begining it opened KDE. I did it twice and it open KDE each time. I guess that is ok, but how do I switch between the two?? I want to be able to use Gnome because that is what Ubuntu has and I want to switch back to it after I learn how to make my cd player work. Can I use the partioning tool in Mandrake 10.1 ce for dual booting windows ME or XP home and Ubuntu. I have two other puters I want to convert. I would get rid of windows all together if I knew how to down load jpg's from my card reader and resize them so I could put them on ebay or upload them to my web page. As soon as I learn how to do it , windows is history. I see that you are an Ubuntu fan too. Have you had problems with it ?? Thanks, Ron
  10. OK, I am having the same problem with up dating 10.1 ce. I am very new at this in fact this is only my second week with a linux system. I first started out with Ubuntu. It was ok, but I had problems with sound working[finally got it to work] and my cd player[still not working]. So, after checking the forms I decided to switch to Mandrake 10.1 ce. Everything is working so far. YEA!!! When I get the terminal up, how do I change from user to root?? Also I do not seem to be able to get the "Easy Urpmi" web site to open... even if I did, I am not sure what to do with it after that How ever I will cross that bridge after I get the web site to open. Is anyone else having the same problem and is there any other way to update if that site does not work again???? I do not know where to find MCC as in: "If you go to MCC and click on boot I think the first screen that comes up is to confirm which bootloader you are using then the next screen shows your kernels." and "also urpmi --auto-select does not install the latest kernel by default , but you can do that later in MCC after the upgrade" . Can anyone tell me where to find it? One last question, when I was down loading it, I was asked which desktop I wanted I chosed Gnome. How would I change it to KDE ? Thanks Ron
