  1. I think this is a NAT issue. I don't know exactly why but I know that this is not an apache specific thing if you can access the server from an xy pc with no problem. Somewhere I read that you can't access your server's WAN IP from your LAN.

    home network + adsl

Hmm i've tried also the internet connection sharing (although I'm not going to share the adsl connection) and it was the same..the moment I try to have to ip addresses (lan + wan) adsl stops working and it wouldn't connect..

    home network + adsl

Hmm the difference is that I don't have a router so each pc has to know how to connect to pppoe by itself. The problem is that ppp0 and eth0 are somehow related because if I just switch to static local ip in eth0, ppp0 doesn't work because my adsl has a dynamic ip. This would be easy to solve if I had 2 lan cards in this pc but I have a barebone pc so this is not possible. AND under winxp pppoe and lan lived together happily so forget about routers and connection sharing. So what I need is to convince my pc to use 2 ip's: 192.168.0.2 and an external wan ip, everything with ONE network card. By the way, I don't need to configure modem because I can't do it since it's connected to pcs with a lan cable only and it doesn't have a UI. Thanks, Matej
  4. Do a google search and type <your-file-system> windows and you should get some drivers for this.

    urpm how to do this?

thanks all! well the reason I was asking this was that using that rpmdrake was a very slow method if I just want to quickly check what version of a rpm I have.. now it's much faster ;) thanks, matej
  6. hello, i've searched the web on this but found nothing. let me give an example: i'm not sure if i have a package called abc-def-ghi.rpm installed but i know it exists. how would i check if there'se a package called something like abc installed on my system and maybe obtain additional info about this package? thanks, matej
  7. The default is kfmclient openProfile filemanagement I'll try your command and see if it's better.. tnx Matej

    home network + adsl

Thanks but what if I don't have a router? Just 2 pc's into a switch and from switch to adsl modem. I can have two simultanous connections then. So I have to have pppoe support in linux, too, in addition to lan configuration..that's the problem.. thanks again, matej
  9. In my opinion it's really good. Simple, plain and very clean. I prefer having the default desktop this way although I did some modifications to look fancier (thus I made a compromise between good look and system resources). But it's better having everything clean at start and then add your own modifications than getting many eyecandies on default desktop and then removing many things. Maybe just the size of the taskbar and buttons down there.. in my opinion it's more useful if it's set to Normal and for my taste Large is even better. I don't know about others but I find the Virtual Desktops very useful - so I have set them up to have 4 of them but maybe for start 2 suits more people..i don't know. I also like to have a Root icon (pointing to /) on desktop in addition to Home and maybe even with superuser rights..but that would be cool for home use, for corporates it's better not to have it.. I like to have a Kwrite icon in the kicker rather than openoffice. I like to have a mcc icon there, too.. And I don't need the Korganizer run at startup.. Otherwise I really like the menu structure and icons..Just the mouse pointer is too "oldish" and it's the same as few years ago. I changed it into the red theme built in mandrake. I also like transparent menus but maybe it's better not to have the on the default desktop. What I miss is a setting button called "Put everything back on default" but maybe it's more of a kde thing rather than mandrake's.. Well afterall I think it's better to have simple things at start with possibility for users to modify them than having an eyecandy with lots of system resources at start. I haven't tried other linux distro's but comparing to windowsxp desktop it's just so much better.. Matej
  10. Hello, I was reading the forums around but couldn't find anything about this.. I have a linux pc and a winxp pc each with one network card connected to switch and from switch to adsl modem. While I can connect to net with both at the same time, I don't know how to establish also a network connection between the 2 pcs. I've configured samba but in konqueror if I type smb:/ it says there's no workgroup on the network. Somewhere I read that if I want to access internet I must not type a fixed ip in mandrake wizards. If I add a new LAN connection in mcc the adsl stops working.. What am I missing? Where to start? What to read? (the network howto's are too complicated for me as I have linux for 3 days now..) thanks for any info, Matej
  11. Now the 3.3 is released..how long does it usually take to wait for Mandrake rpms? And when they are released - does the installation overwrite default mandrake settings or what? Will it be available in the Update feature or not? Ok it isn't time for this yet but I wonder how things went for previous versions (I have linux just about 3 days now..) thans for any info, Matej
  12. Hmm thanks but that doesn't work..I also changed to some x drivers, close mcc and then set the snd-intel8x0 again but didn't work either..and I can't find that file.. any other idea? thanks, matej
  13. Thanks..another thing I noticed.. every time I reboot I need to do modprobe snd-intel8x0 (for the nforce card) before it gets listed in lsmod..how to make it load on boot? thanks again, matej
  14. Ok problem solved by reinstalling rp-pppoe...
  15. hello.. I have a mandrake 10.0 pc and a windows xp pc connected to a switch and from there into an adsl modem. i've done the network install of mandrake and everything worked perfectly (well..as far as network and internet is concerned). after installation I was able to connect to net and do everything except I didn't have LAN between my to pc's configured. So I decided to try to configure it using the wizards in mcc. The wizard did nothing smart, in fact they destroyed the settings needed to connect with adsl. after that I used the "remove connections" and removed everything from there, then I went into hardware configuration and run the wizard for network card from there to make an adsl connection. That didn't work so I started searching in forums and did everything I saw (edited the conf files manually) but still with no success.. modules.conf: alias eth0 forcedeth lsmod | grep force shows that forcedeth is running ping 127.0.0.1 is ok. i run adsl-setup and adsl-start then adsl-status shows it's not running and so does adsl-stop then i found out that adsl-setup actually does nothing because /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf is empty! what should I try to do then? I just want the things to be like they were when I installed mandrake! thanks very much, Matej
