  1. Bellies, Perhaps try setting ACPI = force in lilo. I remember having the same problem with LinuxSMP and I believe this was the fix. Maybe someone else can confirm this?
  2. Hi. Any help would be most appreciated. I recently did a clean install of MDK 10.1OE. In preparation for this install, I backed up any important files like bookmarks, .bashrc, etc, onto my usb pen drive. The device worked fine in 10.0 OE. After the install, I stuck the drive in the USB slot, and typed cd /mnt/removable, which worked fine. However, when I attempted to list the files on the drive, nothing appeared to be there. So, I tried the usb drive on another computer running XP pro, and it worked fine, all files were accessible. Apparently the device is working fine. I then went back to mandrake and typed mount /mnt/removable (never had to do this in the past, but worth a shot), and, after a bit of a wait, I got the following error: "/dev/sda1 is not a valid block drive". I have no idea what that means, or how to proceed from here. If you have any ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear them. I researched the error on google, but could not come up with any definitive answers that worked for me. I will certainly post any system information needed. Thanks in advance.
  3. Devries, thanks for the reply. I have tried adding the /kde3.3 directory as a repository, but what do I put for the hdlist? Thanks.
  4. Hi all, First of all, I apologize if this question has been answered, but I searched and couldn't find anything. I have the MDK 10.1 powerpack DVD. I am doing a clean install and would like to install KDE 3.3 instead of the default 3.2. I have searched the directories on the DVD and have found all of the KDE 3.3 rpm's at /kde3.3, so I know they are on there, but I don't know how to get the thing installed. Any help if most definitely appreciated! Thanks. Pete
  5. Ok, I found the KDEWM part of the startkde script..see below. I'm not sure exactly what I need to change, though. # finally, give the session control to the session manager # if the KDEWM environment variable has been set, then it will be used as KDE's # window manager instead of kwin. # if KDEWM is not set, ksmserver will ensure kwin is started. # kwrapper is used to reduce startup time and memory usage # kwrapper does not return usefull error codes such as the exit code of ksmserver. # We only check for 255 which means that the ksmserver process could not be # started, any problems thereafter, e.g. ksmserver failing to initialize, # will remain undetected. test -n "$KDEWM" && KDEWM="--windowmanager $KDEWM" kwrapper ksmserver $KDEWM if test $? -eq 255; then # Startup error echo 'startkde: Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.' 1>&2 xmessage -geometry 500x100 "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation." fi Thanks.
  6. I would like to use enlightenment 16 as my window manager in KDE 3.2. I've read that it is possible (see http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16264 ), which says, "For a WM, GNOME uses Metacity by default and KDE inludes its own KWin. This WM can be changed. " I've played around with enlightenment a little, and would like to try it as the wm in KDE. I really have no idea where to start with this, other than installing enlightenment, which I've done (version 0.16.6-2) Any help is appreciated! Thanks.
  7. Hi guys, I need a program that will take screenshots with the mouse pointer/cursor in them. I've used ksnapshot and the gimp, but both seem to remove the cursor...unless, of course, I've missed a preference somewhere. I've got a lot of screenshots to take (illustrating a how-to book), so ease of use is important. Suggestions? Thanks! Moved from Software Forum to Art & Design Forum by Artificial Intelligence
  8. Thanks guys! That is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm at work now, but I'll try it out this evening after I get home.
  9. Is there any quick method to find packages I installed as dependencies that are no longer needed? For instance, if I install a program and it has 3 dependencies, and then I uninstall the program, the dependencies are left behind. I know you can do: $ rpm --query --requires <package_name> to list all dependencies, and then try to remove any that seem unneeded, since RPM won't let you remove a package that another package requires, but that is cumbersome. What I am looking for is a quick way to scan all installed packages and remove unneeded ones.
  10. I've tried 'minimized windows only', and that is not exactly what I want. I would like to specify that certain windows never have a taskbar entry, but that others do whether minimized or maximized. If 'minimized windows only' is as close as we can get, I guess it'll have to do. Thanks for your help.
  11. Anna and spinynorman, I do not see the entry "show only iconified windows' in configure taskbar. Below is a screenshot of my "configure taskbar" window. I'm running KDE 3.2. Any ideas?
  12. Is there any way to remove entries for running programs in the taskbar along the bottom of the screen - in KDE? For instance, I leave several programs running at all times, such as Konsole, and don't want the entries for them cluttering up the taskbar. Any ideas? Thanks! 13. Holy moley that site has got a ton of network utilities! I looked through it and am not sure which ones will do what I want. Can anybody offer any ideas as to particluar programs I should investigate?
  14. I have a small home network set up, 3 computers connected to a router. am looking for a program that will monitor traffic on my internet connection. I have tried iptraf, but that appears to only show traffic on my computer, not the entire network. Basically, I would like to know how much of my bandwidth each computer is using at any given moment. Ideally I would like something graphical, but that is not of paramount importance. Thanks - Pete
  15. I've installed wine (via RPM) so that I can run the one app that has kept me as a windows/linux dual booter...National Geographic Topo...a mapping program. It needs access to the maps stored on CD's to work properly. I can run the program in wine, but I can not load any info off of CD. The program behaves exactly as it would if no CD was present in the drive. The drive is mounted, and I can access /mnt/cdrom and see the files there. After reading another recent post on this topic related to a spiderman game (see http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16498&hl=), I ran winecfg and got the following message: fixme:winecfg:WinMain The winecfg tool is not yet complete, and does not actually alter your configuration. fixme:winecfg:WinMain If you want to alter the way Wine works, look in the ~/.wine/config file for more information. Unfortunately, I do not seem to have a config file in ~/.wine/, or anywhere else. The contents of ~/.wine are as follows: file:/home/pmorris/.wine/dosdevices file:/home/pmorris/.wine/drive_c file:/home/pmorris/.wine/system.reg file:/home/pmorris/.wine/userdef.reg file:/home/pmorris/.wine/user.reg In the nonworking winecfg setup utility, there was a place to add the CD rom drive, which leads me to believe that this config file is where the answer lies. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks, Pete edit: sorry, this discussion http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16018 is the one that mentions winecfg.
