  1. I'm running 9.2 at 800-600 res. My out of the box fonts in 9.1 were beautiful and sized correctly in almost all apps. In 9.2 all the fonts were really tiny, I bumped up the font size for KDE in the Look&Feel but all the Mandrake stuff (MCC, Login Windows, etc) still have the very small font size. Anyone know how to set the default font size that 9.2 uses? Thanks, Sal
  2. I found an answer to the problem! It involves an easy edit of the /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap file. If you know the vendor and product id of your PTP camera I believe this would work for any PTP camera that is seen by root. Check out this tutorial by Peter Toft. 3. Sure, here it is. 4. Using MDK 9.1 I'm having a problem here with my Canon A70. It works fine when logged in as root, KDE sees it as a USB PTP Class camera and I can use GTKam, etc with no problems. But as user it is still seen by KDE but I get the "Unable to initialize camera Check your port settings and camera connectivity and try again. (Details-Could not find the requested device on the USB port)" and the "could not list folders in ./". errors. So I know I have a permissions problem but can't figure out how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sal
  5. That just opens the SaveAs dialog box but thanks any way. Sal
  6. Thanks, yes that works but an awful PITA to use. There must be a way to get the embedded viewer to download to a temp file and then play. It did work in 8.2 with KDE3.0.2. Thanks again for the reply, Sal
  7. Using Konq as a web browser if I click on an mpg link (any media link actually) it will not download? I've tried changing the settings in KControl for file associations from Kaboodle to Noatun, etc using both embedded and external options with the same results? Either way the associated media player opens but then nothing happens, checking the lights on my dsl modem I can see that the file does not download. The last time these features worked was when I was running MDK8.2 with KDE3.0.something. My last few installs have been custom hacks but I just did a clean install of MDK9.1 and I still can't get things working? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Sal
  8. Problem solved in 8.2! I found the answer posted on the old MDKuser board. What a shame that this wealth of info is going down in a few days and all this archived info will be lost. Deno, can't we do something about this? Isn't there a way to store these archives? Anyway here is the answer that was posted by a user named Sargek last Nov. I think it may also apply to 9.0 "OK, got it! I did two things, but it appears the first actually solved the problem. In my /home/username directory, there is a .desktop file that read DESKTOP=KDE and I changed it to DESKTOP=GNOME. I also renamed the files in /etc/X11/wmsession.d from 01KDE and 2GNOME to 01GNOME and 02KDE. All is well and now my system does the autologin thing with GNOME as the desktop. Thanks again." The answer really is the .desktop file. In my case I just changed it from DESKTOP=KDE to DESKTOP=KDE3 and all was well. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. Sal
  9. kdm-gdm? I'm a little over my head here. Id need some more info to try this. Thanks, Sal
  10. Thanks guys, but thats not it. Tried the MDK Control thing and the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file is KDE3 DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm This is on the 8.2 box I have access to right now but I've tried MDK Control-Boot Conf. on the 9.0 box also and it still loads Gnome? Thanks for the reply, I'll keep looking, Sal
  11. One thing I've never been able to figure out is how to change the default desktop after setting it to something else during install? I have one install of 9.0 that was set up to default to Gnome with no KDE installed, then I installed KDE3.1rc5 and now want it to be the default load. I changed it in lilo through MDK Control, also in KDE Control, no difference. I also have a different computer with 8.2 that has the original KDE2.2 installed as default. I later installed KDE3.02 in /opt and all is OK in 3.02 but the computer still defaults into a corrupted version of 2.2. I then log out and back into 3.02 and all is fine. I would like to remove the 2.2 install but I'm afraid to as I can't change the default load and don't know what would happen if I tried to boot and 2.2 was missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I really suck at command line so any help here needs to be very clear). Thanks, Sal

    eth0 close command?

Wow, just found out an interesting thing, either command "service network stop" or ifdown eth0" shuts down printing from Cups? Bummer! Anyone got any other ideas on how to close my internet connection without killing Cups? Thanks, Sal

    eth0 close command?

Got it! "service network stop" takes down the network card "service network start" brings it up again. Funny I never heard this issue discussed before? Am I the only one worried about leaving my computer open to intrusion 24/7? Thanks, Sal
  14. Just installed a D-Link DI-604 broadband router to route my dsl connection to 2 computers. After a little fiddleing I got everything working OK, here's my question. When my dsl was hooked up directly to my ethernet card I used to shut down the port with the command "adsl-stop" and open it with "adsl-start" as root. I would like to be able to do the same thing now that I'm useing a router. What would be the correct commands? Thanks, Sal
