  1. mmm, well... I did, some time ago, but I still get some soft asking me for some dependencies that I must install by hand. It's alright, I will be buying the official version anyway so I can get the 4th CD ;)
  2. You know what it bothers me a lot? that easy urpmi is kinda easy once installed, but for some apps it keeps asking me for the freakin CD4 (that I don't have)... so it's back to the basics. I must still install some dependecies by hand (tried to install VideoLan player and it needs a lot of stuff from CD4, so I must install one by one if I want it )

    tuxracer very slow

you MUST install the rigth video driver for your vid card. I did for mine (nvidia drivers) and the output improved a lot [root@localhost root]# glxgears 22203 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4440.600 FPS 27044 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5408.800 FPS 27074 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5414.800 FPS 27074 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5414.800 FPS 27046 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5409.200 FPS 27075 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5415.000 FPS 27076 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5415.200 FPS the only drawback for me was that there is no easy (poin & click) way to install the dammed drivers
  4. Very interesting information :-) Just one question: Is Totem the best player for these files? or should I get VLC or something else?
  5. You don't really have to format or partition anything to try Knoppix since it runs from the CD B) Before I installed mandrake or got into Linux at all, I tried Knoppix in my winXP box, and here I am.
  6. It's funny now that I remember how I downloaded so many CDs for Mandrake (version 6, 7, 8 etc) but I never got the nerve to install it. Now with 10 I am very happy (I just gotta find how to disable my PCI sound card so I can use the onboard sound) I heard SuSE was garbage. lol but I can't really say since I've never used it. And as a new Linux user myself, I can only give you one advice: Know thy SHELL (TM by me )
  7. only problem is... I have no IDEA what [/b]mcc[/b] is... and because of that I don't know if I was messing around with it last night. Oh wait... now that I think about it... MCC could me 'Mandrake Control Center'? I remember I was trying to get the sound working (I have an integrated sound card for audio playback { VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller] } and a PCI sound card for audio input and recording {QSound ThunderBird PCI Audio} and none of them seem to work, even when thye are both listed) so maybe that caused the problem? If that it's so, then I am afraid that this display thing will happen again (and I will have to re-install the driver again) because I have to get this sound thing working somehow... so I've been looking around  Anyway. thanks for your help. I feel alittle more confident. As far as my secondary machine, I was unable to get the visual working, so I will try a internet install of the Nvidia driver if possible, or just re-install everything from scratch.
  8. ALRIGHT I followed your directions. After I started Linux on my MAIN PC, I got a console, and from there I tried the startx command, and I got a lot of text similar to the one I posted before, but this time it said something like 'nvidia module found, but no screen configuration usable' or something. So I typed SU - password - ENTER from there I did the 'modprobe nvidia' and it semmed like nothing happened. Then I typed exit then again startx... and here I am! I will probably re-install the NVIDIA driver... but my question is: will this happen again for (apparently) no reason? Do I have to get a specific NVIDIA driver or the one from the nvidia.com site it's alright? I mean.. I just want to setup my system and work, not really fight with the SO. STILL AHEAD!!! In my second PC (the old one with Linux only) I did exactly the same procedure... but I had no success... and I was wondering again WTHELL! Then I remembered that on my second PC I did not installed the NVIDIA driver yet. All my second PC has is the generic Geforce2 nvidia driver I selected during the installation of Mandrake 10 (for the first PC that Im using now, I did not selected any driver, because I was sure I was going to install the newest one later anyway)... so maybe that's why when I did the: modprobe nvidia command on my second PC, I got a 'module not found' and I am still stuck at the console  I do not worry much about the second PC, because I could do a clean installation again, but I would like to know if I can still 'save' it. BWT (again), how would I be able to view or edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file from the console? I tried cd /etc/ to get there, but then I didn't know what command to use in order to view or edit the file (I used the old DOS commands with no luck... lol ) thanks again.
  9. well, I did the startx command... and I got a long list of processes related to the XF86 or something. In short, it was something like this: (Im copying from what I am able to see on the monitor) Build date: 24 March 2004 Before reporting problems, check http://www.xfree86.org/ to make sure that you have the latest version. Module loader present Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting, (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) Informational, (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. XIO fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 unknown processed) with 0 events remaining. :o Fatal server error: No screens found... oh well.. don't know if this is helpful, but the funny thing to me is how it happened in both PC's at the same time after they were working properly. btw, I haven't tried the startx command on my main PC, so I will now and I report. thanks.
  10. Well, hello all. I am new to Linux (only a couple of days with it) and I installed MDK10 on 2 machines. In the first machine I installed Linux and nothing else (an old PC) and on my second machine I installed Linux on a partition (along with winXP for gaming). Everything has been pretty smooth so far... until today  Just yesterday (well, it was already today early morning) I was working with Linux using KDE in my main machine (the one with partition) and I shutdown and went to sleep. Today I turned on the PC and selected Linux at the bootloader (LILO) and the system started to load all of those complicated things that make Linux run. Then, intead of getting KDE, all I got was the console asking me for a login. :o So I was like "that's weird... but let's see what I can do" So I input my login and password, then I use the su to get root, then I input password again... then I use init 5 (previously, I installed NVIDIA drivers, so I got that command from this post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=4567 ) To my surprise, nothing happened. So then I write init 6, it kills all the processes and all I get is a reboot :o So at this point I was like "do not panic, I was probably too tired last night and changed a setting without knowing"... so I fired up my second computer (Linux only) and to my even greater surprise... I get a CONSOLE too!!! I was like.. wthell!!! so basically I'm stuck now I had to restart my main PC and login with my winXP partition to be able to post this message. what to do, what to do.... thanks.
  11. Well, I have been up and discovering Linux since last night at 9pm (now it's 5:30am), and it has been the same (or 'worse') for the past 3 days... LINUX is ADDICTIVE! I am documenting my experiences, and one of my goals is to get more people in the video editing and graphics design field to use Linux. I am documenting pretty much everything... since the very few and useful Console commands I am learning to my actual feeling for Mandrake over XP (the one I've used for years now). I'll keep you posted (and asking questions too). thanks
  12. Hi phunni... Hey, thanks a lot for the advice. You can tell that I am a complete incompetent in Linux (for now) But thanks for your advice. I installed libopenal and after inserting one of the installation CD's I was able to setup Blender with no problems, and it works! btw, so far I've been geeting the RPM's from rpm.pbone.net... is that a good place to go? Now Linux is getting familiar for me
  13. hi anon (I am using KDE on an Athlon XP machine) the RM command works perfectly. Now I just gotta read the manual to understand the options. thanks a lot. As far as getting Blender as a RPM, I couldn't find my Contrib folder (and I looked! lol) so I went to google and found the next address: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/1221083/com/blender-2.33a-1thac.i586.rpm.html and from there I got the file called blender-2.33a-1thac.i586.rpm (2.3 megs) That one is the latest release btw. Well, from Konqueror I double click on the file (or right click and select 'Software Installer') and first I get this: You are about to install the following software package on your computer: /home/luis/blender-2.33a-1thac.i586.rpm You may prefer to just save it. What is your choice? I say Install it and then I get something saying: Some package requested cannot be installed: blender-2.33a-1thac.i586 (due to unsatisfied libopenal.so.0) do you agree ? so I say YES and... that's about it. Nothing happens either I don't know what's going on so I will try with an older version of Blender as RPM and see what happens. Also, I will try to install Wings3D to see the results I get. Thanks for your comments.
  14. Well, this is the first time EVER that I try Linux (in fact, IM posting from the lastest Mandrake release <10.0> ) and I had several problems with the installation, but everything works right. Windows? I know it inside out, so Linux is a test for me. The only thing I've done so far is installing the NVIDIA drivers under Linux for my GeForce FX 5700 Ultra (and that was a hassle  ) Since I am a multimedia designer (in win: Photoshop, Lightwave, Vegas Video, etc etc.) I decided to start using Linux to create all of my work with Open Source and free software for Linux (Video, audio and graphics editing software), so to get me started, I wanted to install Blender. After downloading and unpacking blender to /home/username/blender/ I double clicked the blender 'executable' (latest version of blender <2.33a> ) and nothing happened, so then I read that from a Terminal window I could unpack it to /usr/local, and I did using Konsole (following the instructions from blender site), but still it wouldn't work for some reason (it just doesn't load). So now I have a folder in /usr/local that I can't delete from Konqueror. I tried the Konsole, but a DEL or DELETE command is useless (since they are not commands recognized by Konsole). Any help about why Blender doesn't work or how to delete the Blender folder from /usr/local ? thanks, and welcome to me to the world of Linux, [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
