  1. Here's another idea... though you may have already thought of this. Set him up with the bookmark to these forums that he can just browse whenever he has some free time. I jumped into linux about 6 months ago, and still spend an hour or two a day just browsing the "today's active topics". It has taught me a lot, and I found that when I encountered a problem on my system I recalled reading something about it on these forums, came back and usually had the problem fixed in no time. I don't think I would have gotten anywhere without the help of the people on these forums.
  2. Just your luck! I got a new HP ZD7010 this past weekend and have installed Mandrake 10 OE. It was actually the easiest install of Mandrake I've ever done. (I've gone through at least 10 installs in the last 6 months on various other computers) The only issue I really incurred during this install was with the screen resolution, as this laptop has a 17inch widescreen monitor, so I actually had to go into the XF86Config-4 file to add a resolution of 1440x900. I also needed the NVIDIA kernel patch, but that was automatically taken care of during install. I however am not using the conventional modem, as I have a cable connection and would rather shoot myself then deal with dialup internet :D So I can't help you there. I've been up and running for 4 days now, and have not run into any problems. ( Knock on wood :P ) If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to share my experiences.
  3. Does anyone know when the pre-ordered powerpacks from mandrakestore.com are going to start shipping? I paid for mine at least 3 weeks ago now and when I track the order it is still sitting at "waiting to be processed". I am not normally impatient, but the least they could do is send an email update or something.
  4. I'm not sure about everyone else but during my partitioning section of the install I had the option to "auto allocate". I just clicked on the drive I wanted to use, clicked on the auto allocate button, and that was it. Oh and if you have a USB mouse, you may lose it during install. It happened to me and I've heard a lot about it happening to others as well. There are fixes for this though, so if you have a usb mouse try reading up on them before you start the install. I was able to fix mine, but I have no idea how. It just decided to work after have a dozen reboots :P
