As stated in my own topic in the hardware section, Mandrake 9.2 did give me problems and 9.1 did not. The Xfree packages, as well as how the systems load via lilo changed once again in 9.2 and my system will not unload the kernel. 9.1 as well as other distros (older ones), such as 8.2 mdk and rh 7.3 worked like a charm, while newer versions of distros didnt like my system although it too is very new. If I could get mdk 9.2 working I'd be a happy man, but for now I'm cranky, and will not deal with the pain. Mandrake is a good distro out of the box, but if something they dont need to change is changed, it might not be for the better. Ofcourse this is my own opinion, but security is not an issue when you have a slackware box in which will pass any security exam in front of the Mandrake Box or even Wintendo for that matter. Some things are meant for the better, but some things are not. Its just that a few things like the XFree version and Lilo should not be changed until they work perfectly. A distro is not a distro when it's too cutting edge for even the newest hardware to work, even if using Gentoo is the case, atleast Gentoo loaded without a problem. One thing that should be added as an option on Mandrake is loading bzImages off floppies so that I don't have these issues.

Passing those options and resetting the video card did not work. I'm probably going to download version 9.1 and do an upgrade. Hopefully this works. Otherwise I will compile my own kernel, copy it from a floppy through gentoo to the boot partition, and chroot to update lilo with this new entry and forget the Mandrake optimized kernels. My security setup is high enough on the entry level side, that I seriously doubt any of those extra kernels are needed. I hope this explains my status, and I believe that this topic should end.

That sucks man... clouds will make your directway slow as hell and sometimes not even connect. There is significant lag, and it is no better than any other shared provider, but since you cant get dsl, I would recommend it. I have directv for television, and rarely have problems, and I could get directway and t.v. off the same satillite cause I got dual uhv, but dsl kicks so much ass I'd rather not pay double for lag, cause I like games. Cable is not an option... they are 15$ more than my dsl and are half the speed both directions. Satillites are usually 1500/512 or 1500/256, which is double what I have, but they sometimes have problems with clouds and sometimes don't run stable enough to use. I am paying 24.95 a month for verizon online dsl, which after the directv internet snaffu, is under control. Their service is untwarted, and I am enjoying over 95% of the dsl's potential, as cable you would not. It's up to you, but I recommend getting an ok router and not hooking it up using usb, cause Linux doesn't work too well with such things.

After installing mandrake 9.2 without a hitch, I proceeded to boot into Linux. On the bootloader, I have failsafe, enterprise, secure, and normal linux. I tried every one of those, but they either blank the screen or get stuck after the bios check before the kernel unloads. I am running a Geforce4 MX 440SE @ 4x AGP on a Syntax KT400 board with 1GB pc2100ddr and a 40GB drive. The front side bus should be running at 266mhz, but wont work at 266 due to an unknown problem that may have occured when it was shipped to me. The system runs Redhat 7.3 and Windows fine, as well as most of Gentoo, but MDK 9.2 doesn't want to boot. Please tell me what can be done, and if putting in another video card would be a good idea. The video card has a problem once in a blue moon where the screen shifts and looks fizzy and then goes back to normal upon resoultion change, such as after the default Windows 2000 boot screen.

I use Slackware as a router because I don't need all the spiffy options using my non-existant ram. Even disabling services wouldn't matter, as I lost my copies of MDk 8.0 and 9.2 probably wouldn't install with that amount of ram. That router has significant uptime and I don't want to disturb it =p. This discussion is interesting because of the vastly different types of pcs and what they have all running Mandrake without a hitch.

If you need to get nvidia drivers, you'll have to put a line in the xconfiguration. Just open up an xterm, su, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and change the driver line from nv or vesa to nvidia. Then hit ctrl + alt + bkspc and ignore the error. Ctrl + Alt + F1 to go to console. Login as root do sh NV* in the directory that you downloaded it in. It should compile a custom module, if you installed the necessary development tools/libs. After it finishes, either reboot or restart gdm, login, you have glx! If you just want to start with console, open up Mandrake Control Center, Boot Configuration, and Uncheck Auto Start. B)
