  1. i tried both firmwares PA48 and PX47, flashed them with windows but they both fail as well. actually for the first time a simulation was successfull using the PX47 firmware with a write speed of 2x but when i tried it again it failed with the usual input/output error. Are there any kernel modules or some package that could be causing this? I think the kernel cannot get the proper configuration for the device and thats why it fails. in any of the simulations, the write speed even though set at auto has never exceeded 2x and the drive is capable of 8x. There are no messages in dmesg. .xsesson-errors shows this (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed. its funny how the simulation actually completed successfully but the second time it failed. i am clueless though.
  2. Thanks for the reply, the drive works in windows and i am burning on Sony DVD-R's, i have tried on a no name brand as well but same thing. I have also tried burning cd-r but no look there either. It's possible that the drive is not compatible with linux, but i am hoping i wouldnt have to spend money on a new one if this one is functional. Funny thing is it wont even simulate successfully, and it fails at different percentages everytime. do you of any usb burners that are 100% compatible with linux? id rather have an internal one but 3 different distros fail me and i am starting to lose hope. Ill give this a try thank you very much for the sdparm as well i was a little confused about that. feel stupid reading all those manual pages and then finding hdparm doesnt even apply for scsi devices heh. But ill try out the firmware with crossed fingers.
  3. Guys i am running mandriva powerpack 2008 on a gateway mx6750 laptop. There are a few issues that piss me off but i will try my best to figure them out before botherring you guys but this one is just pissing me off. I switched from Fedora 8 to openSUSE 10.3 to powerpack 2008 ( current ) because of this but still nothing so the problem goes deeper than i thought. I have a philips sdvd8441 cd/dvd burner and k3b/gnomebaker fail to burn or simulate anything and gives me an input output error. This is the output from the debugging window on k3b. There are no other error messages displayed there (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed. (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed. (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed. (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed. this happens right when i click on the burn button in k3b. I tried enabling dma on the drive which was suggested to me on suseforums but i dont think it works for scsi devices anyways it gives me this error which i dont think it should just by doing hdparm /dev/sr0 /dev/sr0: IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 256 (on) HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device My burner works on windows xp so it is not a hardware problem. This is really frustrating and if someone could just give me a hand id really appreciate it. I like linux and am trying to learn as much as i can and i want to replace windows with it but ireally need my internal burner. Any help will be appreciated
  4. no i did that but it did not work with the kickoff memu... so i did a search to find where the original mandriva button is coz it kept going back to it even if select to use default K button. But then the kickoff menu is kind of buggy as it freeses my taskbar once in a while so i switched to the default menu for better performance and then i can change the icons in ~/.kde/share/icons/apps for it to have effect, but not using the kickoff menu.
  5. guess i gotta bump this topic ... hehe well i am using mandriva 2008. i did all of the above, i copied the default kmenu.png over the mandriva one as well as added entry to the kickerrc but the icon is not chaning. i am also using a different icon set from kde-look.org but that kmenu icon doesnt change the default mandriva one. i am also using the kickoff menu so i am guessing the icons are stored in a different place. any ideas ? EDIT: I just got it... /var/lib/mandriva/kde-profiles/powerpack/share/icons/crystalsvg/64x64/apps/mdv_kmenu.png guess i just had to learn how to use find properly :)
