  1. well, guys, really thanks for the help, but i solved the problem. or actually more kinda found a way around it: i installed Ubunto 7.04... (this solved my network problems, but not my sound problems, but this is a matter for another post :) )
  2. i don't think this is it, because my winXP machine that is on the same lan has no network problems. but i will check those values when i'm back home...
  3. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 DEVICE=eth1 BOOTPROTO=dhcp IPADDR=10.0.0.4 NETMASK=255.0.0.0 NETWORK=10.0.0.0 BROADCAST=10.255.255.255 ONBOOT=yes METRIC=10 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no USERCTL=yes RESOLV_MODS=no IPV6INIT=no IPV6TO4INIT=no DHCP_CLIENT=dhclient DHCP_HOSTNAME=OFRI-LINUX NEEDHOSTNAME=no PEERDNS=yes PEERYP=yes PEERNTPD=no i can access ftp://ftp.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/Mir...ia/main/release from FF, but when i tried from konsole, i got this: # lftp ftp://ftp.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.mandrake.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release cd `...release' [Connecting...] [... long pause] same here: ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/mandrake/offi...a/main/release/ works in FF lftp ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release cd `ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release' [Connecting...] [...long pause] and just to make it complete voodoo: ftp://ftp.il.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD works fine in FF, and also works from konsole: # lftp ftp://ftp.il.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD cd ok, cwd=/pub/FreeBSD lftp ftp.il.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD> ls drwxrwxr-x 6 1001 1001 512 Apr 05 2005 CERT lrwxrwxrwx 1 1001 1001 15 Mar 23 17:52 CTM -> development/CTM lrwxrwxrwx 1 1001 1001 17 Mar 23 17:52 CVSup -> development/CVSup drwxrwxr-x 4 1001 1001 512 Jun 25 2004 ERRATA lrwxrwxrwx 1 1001 1001 17 Mar 23 17:52 FreeBSD-current -> branches/-current ... now about pinging them, it failed for all of them (even the one that i managed to ftp to) but i think i am doing something wrong here. can you check me here: # ping www.cnn.com PING www.cnn.com (64.236.91.23) 56(84) bytes of data.   4. my favorites for browsing opensource projects are http://www.ohloh.net/ and http://freshmeat.net/
  5. i just made another test: i have access to at least 1 FTP site, from within firefox. i tried the same site using scp from konsole and no go... is this because i disabled ipv6 in FF? or maybe it says my problem in not what we think it is? i am posting my /etc/modprobe.conf file, maybe you can spot something in here alias eth0 ipw3945 alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel remove snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel install snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-hda-intel && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; } alias eth1 e100 install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe ata_piix; /sbin/modprobe ahci; /sbin/modprobe ide-generic; /bin/true alias ieee1394-controller ohci1394 install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off note that eth0 is my wireless, which i am NOT using right now. i am working with eth1.
  6. hi krisbee2000, i am having somewhat similar problems: i have a winXP machine connected to the same LAN that has no network problems. i don't use irc, but some sites didn't load in firefox (disabling IPv6 in FF fixed that), and i can't get to ftp mirrors in urpmi. i can connect to http mirrors in urpmi. do you want to try that and let me know if it works for you too? that will make it almost certain we have same problem (and we have a saying in hebrew that says "the problem of many is a half of a consolation...". ;) i'm not sure it has an english equivalent) you can have a look in the topic i opened about it here. update: there is an english equivalent: "Trouble shared is trouble halved"
  7. tried like 10 mirrors. all ftp mirrors fail, and all https mirrors work. :huh: ?!
  8. first i made the change to about:config in firefox, and it worked a charm (thanks guys, now i can read my mail :D ) then i also added the 2 lines to /etc/modprobe.conf but when i try for example urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.informatik.hu-berlin.de/pub/Mirrors/ftp.mandrake.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2007.1/i586/media/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz i get adding medium "main" and then nothing :huh: ... so i guess ftp still doesn't work. any other suggestions?
  9. thanks. i read that post and i'm installing it now. i hope that will help me solve the java problem, but, i am afraid my original problem (some sites not loading in FF) is worse. i also noticed in the installation of the urpmi media, that when i selecet a mirror that is ftp and not http, the installation just waits (i didn't wait long enough to see if there's a timeout). i think these 2 problems are related. my guess is that i have some default firewall or security issue. i will go read about that more. if anyone has any idea, i would love to hear.
  10. thanks. yes no message. just timeout of the request i read in a post on how to install java, that i should download from there. how can i install if from the repos?
  11. terminal says there no such program either
  12. "Caller ID" and "Off Hook" have 00 above them. Master and PCM do not. not since i installed linux. the computer came preloaded with windows vista, and i think it had sounds then. when i open the run dialog and type in alsaconf, i get: Could not run the specified command maybe i didn't understand what you asked me to do... what are the relevant updates? when i finished the OS installation (yesterday) i installed a lot of updates. how can i make sure i have the right ones need for my sound card?
  13. some sites won't load in my firefox, but they do load in konqueror: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:1 www.gmail.com any ideas as to why that may happen? (firefox v2.0.0.6 withoug java installed yet... because http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=11283 is not working [both in FF and in Konq]. OS is 2007.1)
  14. bah! on the preview it looked better :) the bar above the "master" and the bar above the "pcm" are at the red zone. anything else to check?
