  1. I've been using Mandriva for a few years now, and decided I finally need to bite the bullet and dual boot with XP, as uni requires me to use some win stuff that runs horridly under wine. So, a fresh XP install went fine, using only a small part of the drive (really only need web browsing with IE and shockwave/flash etc), and then I booted with Mandriva 2008.1 live cd and installed - all went ok. When I go to boot to windows it gives me the bl**dy bloo screen. I start remembering why I stopped using it in the first place! (I could boot to windows fine before mandriva went on). Error being STOP! 0x0000007B. Blah blah blah, damaged disc etc. Can boot to mandriva perfectly fine, just not windows. Windows part of boot menu reads (i'm using grub): title windows rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 fdisk -l Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 1355 10243768+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda2 1356 41345 302324400 5 Extended /dev/sda5 1356 2438 8187448+ 83 Linux /dev/sda6 2439 2979 4089928+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda7 2980 41345 290046928+ 83 Linux Can anyone assist with my annoying problem? Suggest a cure, or something I've done wrong? Looking up the windows troubleshooting with the error code proved pointless, and I've re-installed both twice now, so it wasn't just a one off problem. At the moment I've got XP only on there, and am using mandriva 2008.1 from the live cd, have not done installation again yet in case there is something I can do beforehand that will make it all work properly! Thanks
  2. Apparently there is no such package, grr. Ok, my next next step is ... ok I don't have a next step. I need my files, so if I backup via command line, I have no problems reinstalling Mandriva, might even upgrade to 2008.1 ... I see no other option, which is sad. I switched to linux to avoid this sort of thing, I hated having to reinstall windoze every time something went wrong :/
  3. Yep, a whole lot of updates ran that night coz I hadn't done it for a while, could that have caused a problem? Deleted /.kde and all the files ... nothing, and still no option to login to kde at the login menu. Getting desperate now!
  4. So, last night I shut the laptop down as normal, and tonight when I start her up, she gives me a login screen. I have auto login set, so thought it was a bit odd. Logged in, only to find myself in IceWM instead of KDE. Logged out, but there were no options to login to KDE or Gnome, and using anything other than IceWM (custom/default/failsafe) spits me back out to the login screen. I've googled but nothing seemed relevant. Can anyone suggest anything I can try? Anywhere I can find details on why suddenly my laptop hates me? I'm using Mandriva 2007 Spring and would love to be back in my nice safe KDE where I can access all my files, because I don't seem to be able to use much apart from a browser in IceWM. I'm uh, slightly technically challenged, so I like it when my computer just *works* Thanks :)
  5. Any ideas? Something I read said to turn the hardware overlay off of the graphics card, but nothing tells me how to do this?
  6. I'm trying to use Xvidcap to take screencaps of a .avi, but all i'm ending up with is a pile of blank blue images. I've tried capping to .jpg and .xwd but they turn out the same. Apparently it's not a common problem, I can't find anything anywhere about what causes it! I'm using Mandriva 2007 Spring, but it's also happening on my laptop that runs Gentoo. Any suggestions? I'm perfectly content to use another program, I just can't find one that will take continuous shots at specified intervals. Thanks.
  7. My /etc/fstab: /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/Patch ntfs-3g defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/Ariel ntfs-3g defaults 0 0 sda1 now is doing the same thing as the other drive 'Permissions Denied' when I try to access it.
  8. So, I come here admitting defeat after exhausting every other avenue for fixing my issue. I'm trying to mount my NTFS external HDD using ntfs-3g. In control centre it's showing as 'Type: ntfs-3g, which I assume means that part of it worked, but when trying to mount it, it spits me out this error: Couldn't mount device '/dev/sda1': Operation not supported Windows did not shut down properly. Try to mount volume in windows, shut down and try again. Mount failed. Anything I can find reporting this error states to reboot windows ... but I'm having issues with this as I'm 100% Mandriva, no dual boot or anything :o Whilst I was in the process of mounting this drive, I decided to see if my other internal NTFS hdd would mount (Ariel) ... and it appears to have worked, but doing the same thing for SDA1 doesn't work (I should also point out that whilst Ariel seems to be mounted, I can't access it. It says 'Permissions Denied'). /dev/hda1 7.7G 3.3G 4.1G 44% / /dev/hda6 26G 22G 3.8G 86% /home /dev/fuse 38G 3.5G 34G 10% /mnt/Ariel I feel very stupid, so please excuse any ignorance on my behalf. Thanks!
