  1. yeah. that's the interesting thing though. I've got no guest account enabled. in mcc, if i go to the user management and view the system users, there's a bunch of system accounts, some user accounts, but no guest account. According to the permissions shown on the link, it says i am the owner, i tried deleting it but it won't let me! I can't delete a link which says i own it without being root? Anyway I did delete it, but better yet I still want to know how that link was created in the first place!
  2. I just noticed that there's a link in the home dir called guest that points to my home dir... is that needed in mandriva? i've tried a few other linux distros and never saw that before....
  3. it says: General: confirm logout - check offer shutdown options - check but i get no shutdown options only "end current session" and end session doesn't work. only lock screen works.
  4. Last night I installed and updated the downloadable 2008.1 CD from mandriva. When I go to the menu and select logout, i get the confirmation screen, if i press ok to logout then the screen turns black and puts me back into my current session. waiting 30 seconds for logout also does the same. There seems to be no choice for shutdown or restart, only logout. The only way I can turn off the computer is by logging in as root and doing shutdown -h now. I'd like to get these things solved, so when my wife turns on the computer and logs into her account she doesn't have to ask me to type stuff in the terminal to turn it off. Any help is appreciated!
  5. i do lspci and it shows that it is a broadcom 4311 lspci -n shows its 14e4:4311 which according to the ndiswrapper wiki, uses bcmwl5.inf the ndiswrapper version I'm using is one that can be installed from the repository. Also, I notice that the wireless button doesnt work in linux. how can i get the button to work, or at least be on when the system boots? (the laptop bios already says that wireless is enabled.)
  6. I've installed the ndiswrapper packages from the package manager, and have followed the instructions for installing the windows drivers. The laptop is a compaq C300. I have done ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf upon nidiswrapper -l i get: bcmwl5 driver installed, hardware present then modprobe ndiswrapper but when i do iwconfig: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. sit0 no wireless extensions. doing ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:D4:44:DC:B6 inet addr:192.168.1.10 Bcast:192.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::216:d4ff:fe44:dcb6/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:9324 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5810 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:11992220 (11.4 MiB) TX bytes:486025 (474.6 KiB) Interrupt:17 Base address:0x2000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1260 (1.2 KiB) TX bytes:1260 (1.2 KiB) searching the system logs i get: Feb 21 07:34:11 localhost loadndisdriver: loadndisdriver: load_driver(361): couldn't load driver bcmwl5 Feb 21 07:34:11 localhost kernel: ndiswrapper (load_wrap_driver:113): loadndiswrapper failed (65280); check system log for messages from 'loadndisdriver' Feb 21 07:34:11 localhost loadndisdriver: loadndisdriver: load_driver(361): couldn't load driver bcmwl5 Feb 21 07:34:11 localhost kernel: ndiswrapper (load_wrap_driver:113): loadndiswrapper failed (65280); check system log for messages from 'loadndisdriver'
  7. linux is installed, its mandriva2007, 32 bit.
  8. hp pavillion dv2000. amd turion 64x2, and windows tells me this: nvidia geforce go 6150 chipset (when i was able to log into linux, it was a 6150 video card and an mpc51 audio), 1gb ram, 100gb sata hd, nvidia nforce networking controller, broadcom wireless network adapter.
  9. well, i tried to boot into linux from this laptop, in order to try if some generic graphics and sound drivers can work, but now the boot process is stuck on loading the HAL daemon. when it gets to HAL, the dvd-rom pops open and the system just waits there. If i close the dvd-rom, then it just pops open again. anyone have trouble booting into linux after using win xp?
  10. Which laptop makers generally have the least problems running linux? And which ones have the most? Acer Avertec Compaq Dell HP IBM The reason I'm asking this, is because I had bought an HP laptop (dv2000 turion 64 w nvidia graphics/sound/ethernet) from best buy and tried to run linux on it with no success. the nvidia drivers I downloaded don't work yet, and I've checked on the net that others have problems with the nvidia geforce 6150 and nvida soundcard together (I found this post http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=75808), however the beta nvidia drivers didn't work for me as it did the other people... since I found that the laptop has a few bad pixels, I'm planning to exchange it this weekend, perhaps for a similarly priced laptop of a different brand and configuration.
  11. well, I found out how to reinstall mandriva with the 32bit option, but now I have reinstalled it, and I can't mount the cdrom or usb drive as a normal user. only if I su and then mount manually can I get to see the usb or cdrom. is there a way to allow regular users to mount those devices while keeping the msec at 4?
  12. well, I just found some other things don't work well in 64bit, like scim, and scribus now crashes frequently.... so, how can I force the i586 install of mandriva on this x86-64 laptop?
  13. When I installed mandriva 2007 on the laptop, it installed the x86_64 version. but the 64 bit can't run firefox with flash... how can I either get flash to work in the 64 bit mandriva, or reinstall the 32bit version? if it makes a difference, the laptop has a turion 64x2 processor
  14. when mandriva installed, it created these partition: /, swap, and, /home. now, I want to resize home and make a partition /var/www/. I already have apache installed, so what's the best way to add the www partition and move all the web files there?
  15. I've been looking on the web for a tutorial on how to setup the invictus firewall, but I can only find advertisements about it being on mandriva 2007. has anyone configured this? and is it compatible with firestarter?
