I've discovered a linux project to make it possible to adjust your desktop colors using a pantone huey, that is FAR simpler than trying to use one of the higher end colorimiters and Argyll. (not to mention cheaper since a huey is about 1/3rd the cost of a colorimiter that will work with Argyll or lprof) It's available here- http://sourceforge.net/projects/mcalib I'm hoping that somebody out there has access to a huey so they can test this before I run out and buy one. Some notes on testing this: You'll need 'scons' to compile/install the program which is available at www.scons.org If you've already used Argyll, lprof or a Windows application to generate an icc profile for your monitor, you can remove the profile with the following command xcalib -clear Don't worry, it won't have any effect on what you've done to make the profile load automatically. Once X restarts, it will reload your profile. If you're running Monica, Nvidia-Settings or manually entering gamma corrections using xgamma, be sure you reset all those values first. In addition to scons, you'll also need xgamma. Almost every distro out there comes with xgamma, but for some reason, mandriva 2007 didn't install it by default for me. Don't worry, if 'xgamma' doesn't return current gamma values from the command line, you can install xgamma from the MCC. If you're using a different distro, it's almost certainly there already. I had been trying 'javaws calibrationaider.jar' clearly it was just me. Unfortunately, that program seems to be a lot less than advertised. Anybody else know of a good programs for monitor calibration in linux?

I've been doing a lot of digital photography and image editing lately, and decided to try and calibrate my monitor a little better. I don't dual boot with windows, so using a windows tool to create a color profile for xcalib is out of the question. I've found two differnet linux tools for calibration. The first is Monica, which works fine, but is WAY too basic for what I want to do. The one that looks great to me is called CalibrationAider available at http://www.imagingassociates.com.au/color/...ationaider.jspx They have a version designed for linux that is written in java. I have the latest version of java installed and working properly, the plugin works fine anyway. Every time I try to launch CalibrationAider, I get the java splach screen, followed by a brief pause (~3 seconds) followed by an error window that just says "Unable to Launch the Application." Okay, I think I've got it nailed down now, the best of luck to anybody who cares. 1. go to the linux-wacom site and download/install the latest and greatest version from them. 2. Open up the mandrake control center, go to system>processes and disable harddrake from running at boot, and stop the process. 3. As root "modprobe -r usbmouse" 4. As root "modprobe -r wacom" 5. As root "modprobe -i wacom" 6. As root "lsmod" check the list and make certain that usbmouse is NOT there, and wacom IS there. 7. Blacklist the usbmouse kernel module. I actualy had to do this in two separate places, which was not necessary in the past, but whatever. 7.1 Add the line "blacklist usbmouse" to /etc/modprobe.conf 7.2 Add the line "usbmouse" to /etc/hotplug/blacklist 8. If you're using the Gimp, click edit>preferences>configure extended devices, you should see all 3 wacom devices there. NOTE******* I have discovered that for most people, /dev/wacom or /dev/input/wacom simply does not exist. Also, using event0 etc can change every time you connect or disconnect a piece of hardware. That's a pain. If you look in /dev/input/by-id you will find simlinks to your input devices which are listed by name. These links may change what they point to every time you plug in a new device, but the links themselves are always there, and never change. Pointing you xorg.conf to "/dev/input/by-id/usb-WACOM_CTE-430-UV3.1-4-event-mouse" the way I did will save you a lot of headache. Of course, if you're using a volito, you'll have a different name to link to, but the idea is the same.

I have a graphire 4x5 and I've had no luck what so ever with the current release of mandriva. In the past, it has worked very well. With the default configuration applied by mandriva, I can get it to work in relative mode with no pressure sensitivity (pretty useless) If anybody else has a clue..... What I have figured out is that the kernel for 2007 once again has a usbmouse module that conflicts with the wacom module. I've had limited success removing both modules and then reloading wacom. However, I have been unable to blacklist usbmouse. I have explicitly placed it in the blacklist file, but it auto-loads anyway.

Never mind. All the FAQs I read said it was a rt2500 chipset, turns out half of them are rt61. works fine, just needs a different driver.

Okay, I've purchased a new WiFi card using a chipset which is verified to be linux compatible. I've downloaded and installed the kernel module driver for it, which is known to work well with my kernel. I did not encounter any errors. The module loads correctly when called by modprobe. The problem is that Mandriva 2k7 can't seem to figure out that the card in my computer adn the driver I installed go together. How do I tell Mandriva to use a psecific driver with a specific card?

Okay. Now that I have 2006 installed, I must say it's fantastic. The new kde, better designed logo's, 70% shorter boot times. It's just wonderful. It's everything that linux should be. Fast, stable and beautiful. I just wish that someone with a clue ran the store.

well, after having nothing else to try, (since I didn't want to wget the enitre repository which includes aobut 70gb of iso's) I decided to register my copy. Of course, It hadn't occured to me earlier, since I hadn't installed anything to register. To make a long story short, it turns out that registering entitles you to one month of Silver membership at the club. Therefore, I wa able to download the iso with bit-torrent. I'm 95% done now. As for being able to isntall all the extras without buying the powerpac, I know. I was just hoping they might ahve improved the store enough to where I could support them financialy again. 2006 seems like a big step up, so I'll probably use it fora while. However, when I'm done with it, I'll be finding a new distro unless I've heard great things about the store changing.

I almost forgot. There is a link in one of the confirmaiton email they sent my wife. It says "direct Link for Customer Care" or something to that effect. when you click the link, a mandriva page opens with the following error: Module not found The requested module company could not be found. Possible reasons for this are: * The module name was misspelled, try changing the URL. * The module does not exist on this site. * This site uses siteaccess matching in the URL and you didn't supply one, try inserting a siteaccess name before the module in the URL .

This is a rant. My first successful linux venture was with Mandrake linux 9.0. I was so happy, that I decided to purchase a retail copy of the power-pack from the Mandrake store. My order took more than 3 times as long to arrive as projected, and I got absolutely no support of any kind from anyone associated with mandrake while I was waiting. When I finaly got a response from somone, it was the day after my Power Pack had finaly arrived. All this was when 9.0 was the new hot thing. I have not bought any product from the mandrake (now mandriva) store directly since then. Fast forward to last week. I just turned 25, and my wife purchased Mandriva 2006 powerpack for me from the Mandrake store. Given the trouble I had in the past, I told her to buy the download version, and NOT have them mail me a disk. On my birthday, she had a URL I could download from and all the info for a stand alone FTP client. The url was in the form of ftp://username:password@download.mandriva.com for the ftp I was given a host name, username, password and port. For 2 days, I was totaly and completely unable to log onto the ftp server with any browser or ftp program. Yesterday, I was suddenly able to log on, and the ISO's are there, but I can't download them. The size is listed incorrectly in the download manager, they download in a quarter of the expected time or less and consistently fail an md5sum. One time the 2gb DVD iso hung and crashed mozilla when it reached 4gb. How that's even possible, I'll never know. I have tried to download from two different browsers and an ftp client on a windows XP machine and two browsers and 3 ftp clients on a Mandriva 2005ltd machine. All with the same results. I can log in, and start the download, but it simply will not download a proper iso. What's worse, is that there is no bittorrent for people who paid for the product directly, only for people who paid for the club. If I dont' have mandriva 2006 downloaded, burned and installed by the time I go to bed tommorrow, I'm going to best buy and buying a fresh copy of windows XP. I love linux and I especialy love Mandriva, but their store hasn't improved in 3 years. I could almost cry.

If anyone encounters this problem, the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe supports PATA, SATA, AMD64, Dual video cards on pci-express and Registered memory.

So, I did something dumb, and I am now stuck with a 1GB dimm of DDR400 REGISTERED memory that can't be returned. As some of you know, registered memory doesn't work in most motherboards. I was planning on building a new pc this fall anyway, so can any of you reccomend a motherboard that supports registered memory, AMD64 and pci express x16? Thanks.

Broken record time again, remember that the CVS version of cedega is NOT the same as the commercial version. In fact, it is lacking numerous libraries and functions that are basic to the opperation of many games. For most people the CVS is not worth the time it takes to download.
