  1. im back on linux for those who would remember me in this forum :). just want to know how i would add my linux pc to my windows network which is already setup and configured. cant figure out what im supposed to use to set it up. got mandriva 07 connect with cable modem. need any more info on it lemme know :) Bonnie
  2. I'm back heh, wondering how this wine stuff works??? I hear you can get yahoo messenger with all its features if you download the windows version and have wine?? If anyone knows how to do that please do tell, I'd like to get my cam going and well the linux yahoo messenger is pretty outdated and i don't care for the whole gyach thing.. thanks :D Bonnie
  3. easyurpmi??? mcc??????? i guess that means i dont have the most recent version? anyway i tried it as root aswell and it does the same thing. i could try downloading it from a different location ill look for their official site <if they have one> thank you anyway oh and Happy Vetrans Day Bonnie
  4. i want to install a player that has music stations so i dont have to download everything so i tried installing mplayer.rpm and i get this: [tenebrous_paradise@localhost Desktop]$ rpm -Uvh mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm error: mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 16a61572 error: mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm cannot be installed or when i click it... "unable to register RPM file" Bonnie
  5. hey, if anyone knows any good links or advice on learning how to untar files feel free to send some my way, i dont actually need help with the untaring i can get to the point where it extracts all the files into a folder but after that i dont know what to do with them. its just a general thing.. something id like to learn how to do *smiles* Bonnie
  6. hey, im still having a java prob but my BIGGER issue is i messed up my sisters computer.. she finally decided to put linux on there and when i did it for her something went wrong..i rebooted the pc after installing mandriva and it comes to the screen where it says "linux" or "failsafe" i tried selecting both and it says "bios data check sucessfull... uncompressing linux ok... booting the kernal... " then it shuts off i cant get past that point... shes not too happy with me right now.. but i tried installing it twice and the same thing.. its not the cds though because they are the same i used on my pc... obviously there is an issue "booting the kernal" i guess its possible that my mandriva cds arent compatible with xp? if not what can i get that WILL install and work <because its too late i already got rid of xp.... oops.. heh.> im not sure if i gave enough info on her computer.. its an hp desktop... intel processor somewhere around 23 gigs of hd space.. thats all i can think of off hand Bonnie
  7. alright i got it where it needs to be </usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.2/plugins> its still got the lock on it im not sure if that matters then i went to edit, preferences, web features, enable java, enable java script were both marked but when i go to a java site it still tells me im missing javascript plugin.. i typed cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.2/plugins su ln -s /home/tenebrous_paradise/jre-1_5_0_05-linux-i586.rpm/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so the libjavaplugin_oji.so is in my /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.0.2/plugins folder so i closed the browser opened it enabled java and javascript, went to a site that involved using java it told me im missing the java plugin..... Bonnie
  8. ive already tried that about 50 times. im probably doing something wrong but ive tried fallowing the instructions on the java site and it made the plugin but it didnt put it where it belongs <in the mozilla plugins folder> and i cant move it to that folder because it tells me "permission denied" even with the konsole when i type out the command it does the same thing says "permission denied". bonnie
  9. im having a problem AGAIN sorry... but im trying to put java into my browser and it keeps telling me permission denied.. im logged in as root maybe i have the command wrong, but i found the file and it has a lock thing on it, so i looked at the properties, under permissions and i cant change anything on it to make it accessible.. i was going to mannually move it to my mozilla plugin folder but it wont let me do that either. ive been toying with it for a while and ive run out of ideas as to what to do.. bonnie
  10. yea i got it, limewire is workin now, now im just trying to install it onto my browser ill see how that goes hehe. i should be ok after this java thing is working at least for a while anyway. so ill let you know how that works out.. thank you again for all who have helped me get past my clueless point on this OS. i think im starting to get the hang of it aside from the confusing command lines. but im working on that, but i must attend to non computer related tasks today so ill try to finish up on my java issue tonight, later *smiles* bonnie
  11. *sigh* cant install that either , im stuck on number three i go to the konsole and type "su" it works then do the pw thing then on three i type "cd/usr/java" it says no such file directory.. so i tried "cd/usr/local" like the little note at the bottem says and same thing... Follow these instructions: 1. At the terminal: Type: su 2. Enter the root password. 3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type: cd For example, to install the software in the /usr/java/ directory, Type: cd /usr/java Note about root access: To install the JRE in a system-wide location such as/usr/local, you must login as the root user to gain the necessary permissions. If you do not have root access, install the JRE in your home directory or a subdirectory for which you have write permissions. im trying to install java by the way those are installation instructions for java <part of them> anyway i seem to be having a HUGE problem with the commands..... Bonnie
  12. ok i found the file i was looking for now " some package requested cannot be installed: LimeWire-free-4.9.37-0.i386 (due to unsatisfied j2re[>=1.4.1]) continue?" is an issue maybe i just wont bother with it i guess i should figure out what this stuff means before i try to do something complicated.. *sigh* ill take that beer now haha anyway, thanks but im frustrated so i need to get away from this thing for a bit *hugs kisses and all that* bonnie
  13. what is /user/bin?? i dont comprehend this is so confusing bonnie
  14. this is what i get when i open the file im sure that somehow tells me how to get into the program but im not sure because all that looks pretty foreign to me. i know i am probably a real pain right now but the up side to this is that is the only problem i am having so far, trying to open files via command or at least finding them so i can click on them and try my luck that way, but im no longer looking for yahoo i have that installed and working fine right now im just trying to find out where i put limewire... thats what all that lot down there is for too by the way *points down at all the stuff below my text* #!/bin/sh PATH=/usr/bin:/bin umask 022 NODlibthread_path= diskSpaceRequired=58920 MIME_TYPE=application/x-java-jnlp-file echo_args="-e " tail_args="-n " more <<"EOF"OT_VERSION=150_05 javahome=jre1.5.0_05 platform=linux PACKED_JARS="lib/rt.jar lib/jsse.jar lib/charsets.jar lib/ext/localedata.jar lib/plugin.jar lib/javaws.jar lib/deploy.jar" ARCH=32 LINUX_RPM= JAVAWS_BIN=bin/javaws i hope all this stuff will help you guys figure out what im trying to do because im having difficulty explaining what i am trying to do.. Bonnie
