I have a problem with X, or rather two problems that may be related as they appeared at the same time. I don't know if these problems are due to the beta nature of cooker or misconfiguration on my part. I boot to the command line and start KDE (my preferred desktop environment) with startx. The first problem is that I can't exit X from within X. It seems like regardless how I try to exit X, text mode is not restored. In order to get back to text mode I have to use CTRL-ALT-F1 to return to the virtual desktop I started X from and then press CTRL-C. The other problem is that X sometimes (about every other time) dies when I press any key on the keyboard. When that happens I press CTRL-ALT-F7 and then ALT-SysRq-K to kill off all remnants of X (still no text mode), CTRL-ALT-F1 and startx to get X back

I Can't start X 1.4. Version 1.3 works, but if I try to start version 1.4 I get this error message: What am I doing wrong? Solved. The problem was that x11-server-xdmx wasn't upgraded to 1.4 and that blocked some other packages from being upgraded and there was a version mismatch in X. Reading the description I didn't think needed it, so I removed that RPM and then X worked again.

Newly Mandriva Cooker has started compressing some man pages with lzma, but I must have som misconfiguration on my part as all man pages compressed with lzma just print out gibberish;

What I think you want is to only show the applications running in the current desktop in the task bar and no applications running in other desktops. Start KDE Control Center -> Dekstop -> Taskbar Uncheck "Show windows from all desktops" /Per Lindström

I have problems with USB. When I restart the computer USB is working, but it stops working within 24 hours. I'm running Mandriva Cooker, but I'm more suspicious to the fact that I've recently changed motherboard. If I run grep -i usb /var/log/messages, the last line is from 13 hours after the restart: This message is when I disconnected the mobile phone from the USB port. When USB isn't working, the mobile phone battery isn't even charged. Now I get nothing in /var/log/messages when I (dis)connect the mobile phone.

The problem seems related to the nVidia driver. When I changed to the 'nv' driver the problem went away.

I solved the problem by adding FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc" to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Now I'm back with my old problem with all applications showing almost no text. KDE applications seems worse in this regard than e.g. Firefox. In Firefox text can be displayed if I select it. It then may disappear again after a few seconds. This trick doesn't work in e.g. Konqueror. One odd thing is that even in Konqueror the top menu has text when I start it, but if I move the mouse there, or use a keyboard shortcut, the text disappears.

I'm running a recently updated cooker and recently the fonts have been moved from /usr/lib/x11/fonts to /usr/share/fonts. I changed the FontPaths in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to point to the new location. I noticed that some fonts were missing as some applications used other fonts than earlier. After a resart of X many applications, such as konsole and kate, were missing much or all of their text. An X restart later after having removed an non-existant directory from the XOrg configuration file X wouldn't even start.

I'm not sure what I did to fix the problem, but now it's working again.

Unfortunately no change. I found that an xmessage process is running trying to display this message: It's at lines 337 and 338 of /usr/bin/startkde. It even tries to write this to standard out, but I've not seen this message.

I can't start KDE with my normal user. I'm currently running IceWM and the only KDE applications I can run is those that don't access the internet. I can for example run kmail, but I can't enter my password (it doesn't react to the keyboard). I can't run kontact at all. The problem persists even if I rename the ~/.kde directory. If I run as root I can start KDE normally. I didn't test it too much as root as I don't feel too comfortable running X as root. Does anybody have any idea how to fix this problem. I managed to start X by adding a ModeLine to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. <CTRL>+<ALT>+<+ on the numerical keupad> still doesn't work though.

I have an nVidia graphics card, but am running unaccelerated X as the nVidia installer wants gcc4.1, and a couple of conflicts prevents me from upgrading from gcc4.0 at the moment. As I'm not running accelerated X I get a warning message from the monitor that it can't display the selected resolution. Prior to upgrading to X.org 7.1 (from X.org 6.9) I could fix that by pressing <CTRL>+<ALT>+<+ on the nmerical keypad>, but now nothing happens when I press that keyboard combination. It still complains about the same resolution. Looking at the output of top it seems that X (with KDE) is starting OK. The only changes in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is the changed paths to the fonts.

I managed to start X. startx still doesn't work, though. I tried xinit and got the error message (translated to English) Unknown switch -n. I changed the link etc/alternatives/xvt and pointed it to /usr/X11R6/bin/rxvt instead of /usr/bin/konsole. Then I could start X (wihout window manager) with startx and start KDE with startkde.

There defietely was some error with the file you mention. It contained ShowUser=All on the first line followed by more than 14000 lines of AllowShutdown=All. I deleted all lines except the first two and added the lines you mentions, but the problem persists. One thing that I forgot to mention is that I can start X as root, but not as a normal user.
