  1. Sorry if I bumped this topic up, but I didn't mention that I also have a digital camera as well. My digital camera is a hp Photosmart 735 3.2MP digital camera and I was wondering will this particular camera work on Mandriva? Also, is there a program out there that I can download my pictures from the camera to my computer?
  2. I've been thinking on this issue for some time and I greatly apologise that this thread has been "bumped". Now, I'm considering to migrate all of data from Windoze and planning to upgrade my system into a full Mandriva system. The problem is, I have a DVD burner (in this case, I have an LG GSA-4163 Dual-layer DVD burner) and I want to put all of my data from Windoze into the Mandriva environment. It's like migrating from one Operating System into another. I want to backup my data from Windoze and then migrate it into the Mandriva environment. If I were to install Mandriva first (on one hard drive) and then Windoze (on the second hard drive), how do I configure my boot settings? I know it's a little easy if I install Windoze first, then Mandriva last. I also want to know if there are any applications for Linux that can: - Backup/Restore data in case of a computer crash - Play music (mp3s, m4as) and video (wmv, avi, mpg, etc.) - Play my old skool DOS games - Enabling me to run Windoze applications within the X environment - Creating data CDs, audio CDs, copying CDs, bootable CDs - Bitorrent - Watch DVD Movies I never actually installed Linux applications on a Linux environment in my entire life before. I also have my hardware peripherals that I want to run seamlessly in Mandriva. They are: - My M$ wireless keyboard and mouse combo - My ATI Remote Wonder remote control - ATI TV Wonder VE PCI TV Tuner Card - My Creative Webcam GO Plus Webcam - My USB 4-port hub (non-powered) - My Canon Canoscan FB320P Scanner - My Epson Stylus C64 Colour Inkjet printer Any advice you people can give to me? Please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you.
  3. Well, based on your advice, I'm still trying to find a disused computer somewhere in order to make that machine into a Mandriva print server. By the way, what are the exact computer requirements in order to have a fully-functionned print server? What are the drawbacks? As for the printer, I'm going to use the Lexmark Z705. It's been storing in my closet and hasn't been used ever since. It's a USB-based printer and it's an inkjet. I heard about CUPS (Common Unix Printer System), but I don't know how that works.
  4. I'm planning to set up a print server to share all of my three computers in my household. We recently got a wireless router in our house and we set up two wireless-G USB adapters for our two systems. These two systems that are equipped with Wireless-G adapters are my Pentium 3 computer at 500Mhz and the Celeron D system at 2.66 Ghz. They both run on Windoze XP with SP2 of course. As for the third computer, I'm running on a Pentium 4 at 1.4Ghz. I'm also running Windoze XP, though I'm planning to install Mandriva on my system in the future - until I can find another hard drive to put it on though. My question is, what is the exact requirements on setting up a print server on Mandriva? I haven't found a disused computer in my sighting somewhere as far as I know. I have two USB printers and one parallel port printer. Call me crazy, but that's all I got.... I found that idea from these websites: http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/ http://www.howtoforge.com/samba_setup_ubuntu_5.10 < Although that has nothing to do with Mandriva, this link is loosely based on my own idea and the proposal. So, what's your advice folks? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. - P.S. refer to my diagram attached. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  5. As for plugins, Is there a media player (for playing audio/video) and/or Quicktime plug in for linux? I'm just wondering. Can anyone clarify for me?
  6. Hey there, I'm planning to install Mandriva 2006 on my computer after my long absence from using Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition on my computer system. The reason of that is I had installed Mandriva on my dual-boot Windoze XP Pro SP2 system and tried it out a little. I had removed it off the system after my lack of interest in the operating system. My computer is listed as the following: - Intel D850GB Mainboard - Intel Pentium 4 CPU at 1.4GHz - 120GB Western Digital 7200RPM, 8MB Cache hard drive (currently occupied by Windoze XP) - 30GB Quantum Maxtor 7200RPM, 2Mb cache hard drive (currently vacant) - LG 16X DVD-ROM (equiv. to 48x max CD-ROM) - LG 16X Dual-Layer DVD CD burner - Nvidia RIVA TNT2 AGP video card at 32MB - Intergrated Intel Sound - Intergrated Intel 10/100 networking - ATI TV Wonder VE PCI video card My install of Mandriva in my opinion, won't happen until I completely reformat my Windoze's hard drive and reorganize it into separate partitions on my drive. The proposed configuration for the 120GB being split into partitions goes as follows: 15GB for Windoze and programs (formatted in NTFS or VFAT aka FAT32) 65GB for downloads, music files, photos, etc. (formatted in NTFS)* * I may have the option to split into different segments for each of the files consist of those listed above for the 65GB proposed partition (and formatting it into NTFS or VFAT) Anyway, I've already downloaded the ISO images for the distro, but yet to burn it on the CD. I verified with the md5sums and they are all correct. One question, when I downloaded one of the images from the mirror, I had realised that there's a "mini" and a "live" distro. Can you give me a clear explaination what does the two mean? The biggest hurdle for me is the ability to read to an NTFS partition whenever I run Linux. Is the latest distro have the capability to read NTFS partitions? I also understand that it cannot write to one (except with the VFAT partition). Also, how do I install certain applications (such as Realplayer, Firewall, Antivirus) whenever I'm in Mandriva? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  7. no one caught that? it should be; fdisk /mbr :woops: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I used to pilot project the Mandriva 10.1 operating system on my computer couple months ago, but I hardly used the OS. Is the fdisk /mbr command is safe? Also, do i need to backup my Windoze XP data before doing the fdisk process?
  8. Hi, I wanted to know that if there's a bittorrent client program for Mandriva Linux you would highly recommend. The reason that I'm asking this is that I want to download things using bittorrent. I hope that you people will able to provide me a solution. I'm still a Mandriva n00b and I'm trying to get my "teeth" into this operating system along with my dual-booting habits with Windoze XP Pro with SP2. I hope this helps.
  9. Hello, I was wondering that if there's a program out there or any program that allows me to emulate an acutal video gaming console such as Sega Genesis, Game Gear, NES, SNES, Atari, etc and so on. I have a Pentium 4 Computer System and I'm dual booting with Windoze XP Pro and Mandriva Linux 10.2. I also want to know that is there any websites you people suggest on downloading games that is actually based on these gaming consoles couple years back. Is there a "Universal" program that allows me to emulate these video gaming consoles listed above? Have one of your Mandriva (aka Mandrake) users have done that practice before? If so, how do you like it? What are some of the things that I show know about emulating a video game console on my system? Shall you have any questions, comments and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to do so. Thank you. Moved from Games Forum to Emulation Forum - Artificial Intelligence
  10. I've installed the program into my /home directory using these instructions from a .bin file of RealPlayer. Here are those instructions and I am sorry if the admins see me post this: Installation Instructions - Ensure that the .bin file you downloaded is executable. You can make the .bin file executable by running the "chmod a+x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin" command from a terminal window. - Run the .bin file by typing "./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin". Follow the prompts provided to finish installing the player. - When you launch the player for the first time, a set-up assistant will take you through configuring your player. - Enjoy your RealPlayer10 for Linux!
  11. When I went into my /home directory on my system, I realized that RealPlayer was still there! It was installed there when I was attempting to install the program. The /home directory is where I tried to install RealPlayer in the directory. So how do I safely remove that program off the /home directory? Is there a command to do this? If I simply delete it right away, it would cause major problems with my system!
  12. I've just uninstalled RealPlayer 10 off my system, but even though it's uninstalled, the application still appears and I want to know how can I eliminate it completely. I've tried playing the same video clip that is in RealVideo format and it still closes the application without any warning. Any suggestions?
  13. How do I uninstall realplayer 10 off my Mandriva system btw?
  14. Hey there, guys! I've recently got Mandriva 10.2 on my computer system and I'm getting to know each and every feature built-in to this great operating system. Not only it's more stable and secure unlike windoze (which I currently have a dual-boot with), but best of all, I can customize the way I want to appear. There's one question that a Linux n00b should have in mind: "If I've installed a Linux application either by mistake or not been using it for the time being, how do I uninstall it from my system without causing a catastrophe to my Linux system?" I'm familar with uninstalling apps from my windoze system, but not on a Mandriva system before - in my life. Would anyone give me a hand on how to uninstall applications from my syster? I'm trying to uninstall RealPlayer 10 and Helix (both Video programs to view RealMedia video) after an somewhat "accidental" install.
  15. I've also got the similar but related problem as well. I recently installed Mandriva 10.2 on my system and I also tried to configure RealPlayer 10 for Linux as well. The web browser I do my web surfing is Mozilla Firefox. When I tried to configure my player as provided from the RealPlayer website, it did not play all RealMedia files (even Video). I even tried the advanced install (RPM form) as well. If I can comprehend properly, I believe it's been "conflicting" with the other media player program, Totem Media Player. Before the RealPlayer install, I was able to play RealMedia Files flawlessly (RealPlayer G2 was installed as a part of my Linux install, prior at that time) But after that, when I attempt to play Real Media files using Totem, I've been given a warning that it could not play that particular file because one of the codecs is missing, so I have to install additional plug-ins in order to play the file. So do you people have any suggestions related to my problem? btw, I'm just a Mandriva n00b, and my computer is already configured dual-boot with Windoze XP.
