  1. Seemed to find the problem, using ftp was causing the problem. When I went to using http repositories instead, it worked flawlessly. Not sure why this is, but might be useful for anyone else who has the same problem to give this a try. I have been able to use ftp repositories in the past without any issues. urpmi.addmedia main http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update main_updates http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...ia/main/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update contrib_updates http://mirror.cricyt.edu.ar/MandrivaLinux/...contrib/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-free http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz Crundle
  2. Every time i try to use easy urpmi, I keep getting the following type of error: urpmi.addmedia main ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz added medium main wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "main"... ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/..._info/hdlist.cz ...retrieving failed: curl: (28) connect() timed out! retrieval of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed no hdlist file found for medium "main" examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.main.cz] problem reading synthesis file of medium "main" found 0 headers in cache removing 0 obsolete headers in cache wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg] unable to update medium "main" I have tried using different mirrors to no avail, and this has been happening for about 4 weeks now, whereas before I was able to use many of the mirrors. I recently had to reinstall mandriva 2007 because of a power failure corrupting my hdd, but now I am unable to get the software I need onto my system. I have cleared the media with urpmi.removemedia -a any help would be greatly appreciated, as Mandriva is definitely the system I love to run, but I really need to be able to get media onto there, such as PLF free and non-free. Is this just a problem with the mirrors, and if so, how far off being fixed are they? If anyone has a file of media generated by easy urpmi that still works, could that perhaps be posted also, to see if that will solve my problem. the following is what easy urpmi generated for me; urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...se/binary/i586/ with hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia main ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update main_updates http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...ia/main/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update contrib_updates ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...contrib/updates with media_info/hdlist.cz regards, Crundle
  3. not absolutely sure what the problem ended up being, but a fresh install of mandrake and that same routing table worked a treat. about the only thing that changed was using the latest ndiswrapper instead of the one on the mandrake base rpms. btw, the fresh install of mandrake also solved another problem of getting the system to recognise my flyview 3000 tv card, which now works a treat as my new video recorder. thanks for the help provided, crundle :)
  4. once again I'm in trouble!! I have recently reinstalled mandrake 10.2 after breaking some things whilst playing with configurations. I am trying to get my routing to the local wireless AP in my neighbourhood working, but I am stuck at a point and can't think of how to proceed. I have the belkin wireless card going under ndiswrapper, have done ndiswrapper -m to add it to the startup, and have entered a script to set wlan0 to the AP, but I can't ping it at all, but I can see it when I do an iwlist wlan0 scan, with the results being; wlan0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx - not the numbers shown! ESSID:"www.southernwifi.net" Protocol:IEEE 802.11b Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1) Quality:0/100 Signal level:-64 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm Encryption key:on Bit Rate:1 Mb/s Bit Rate:2 Mb/s Bit Rate:5.5 Mb/s Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Extra:bcn_int=100 Extra:atim=0 the wep key is set correctly. the AP is set to 10.123.192.33, and my ip is 10.123.192.34 my route table is; Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface dial-lns1.sa.ch * 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 ppp0 10.123.192.32 * 255.255.255.224 U 0 0 0 wlan0 10.0.0.0 10.123.192.33 255.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0 default dial-lns1.sa.ch 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 ppp0 my question is what is wrong with my routes that i can't see out from my computer? i don't know why the 10.123.192.32 route is in there, but when this worked before it was also there, and I don't know enough about routing to go much further in case i make it worse. I'm sure its something simple as it always is, any help would be much appreciated..... crundle :) [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  5. might be an idea to give that a try a bit later, not quite a priority atm, but after about 3 months of running linux, i am on the whole quite happy about it, but i think i need to do a clean install again, as i seem to have quite a problem getting rpms to work atm due to dependencies not working out, even though the list of rpms is quite ok for some stuff. go the penguin, crundle :)
  6. My wife has joined a group on msn chat, but is unable to get into it with mandrake. it comes up saying that the operating system isnt supported and we must use ie. so i tried the trick in opera of altering the ua.ini file to tell the website that we were using xp and ie6, but it still doesnt work, even though it did work for a problem i had getting into internet banking. just wondering if anyone has overcome this problem and if so, how? not sure if it might be something like activex instead of being a java issue, of which i have very little knowledge currently..... thanks for any help that can be offered, Crundle :D
  7. woot! after rebooting the system and installing java 1.5 rpm, my internet banking now works under linux!! using opera 8.01 and setting the browser id to 5 which hides the true browser completely did the trick. thanks for all the advice offered, now i can almost see the time for no more need to dual boot with xp and all it's constant need for security updates!!! yay!!! crundle
  8. I will keep trying to persevere in getting around this problem. I used option 5 in the new opera browser id to tell the bank website that I was using ie 6 under xp, but it still wont let me in. I have called the bank now, and will keep doing so until they fix the issue ta crundle :)
  9. Here again... I have done some research that says that my bank wont allow me to use a browser other than netscape or ie on a windows os to use their online banking. so because of this, i have to keep a windows partition on my mandrake machine. i have tried to change the browser id in opera and in konqueror, but although the browser changes to ie or netscape, the os remains unix, which results in the page not working. everything i have looked at so far will only let me change the browser type, not the os type. is this correct, or is there a way to change the os for this one website, so i can get rid of xp for good? this one is quite perplexing for me, any help would be great, especially for konqueror, as i like that browser especially. ta, Crundle :)
  10. Am I stupid or what? I had changed the black ink cartridge in my printer about 2 days previous to the problem occuring, and it hadn't started taking ink out of it untill just now! so I made up some pages of pure black boxes and printed them until the ink was flowing properly. btw, the problem with the scanner is partly fixed in that I managed to get it going in another profile, but will explore what the problem is there after my exams, in aweeks time.... thanks for the help as always, crundle (one more problem solved, about a million more to come) :)
  11. will give that a try. the other interesting (?) thing is that now my printer is not printing, it goes through the processes, but doesnt put ink to paper. so i am thinking of unplugging the scanner unless it needs to be used, to see if it is a conflict of sorts between the two of them. i feel stupid for having to keep asking for help here, but every time i just get it going right, i find i need to do something new so then the learning curve starts again, and i shoul dbe studying for exams now, so the printer is the priority, now i did manage to get the scanner going after going into another user profile - will have to deal with that issue later.... thanks again for the help crundle :)
  12. I was using Kooka previously on my setup (mandrake 10.2 canon fb630p via serial? port with a canon bjc 3000 piggybacked into it. this setup worked before in xp and also in mandrake earlier this week, but when i tried to scan something whilst stupidly finishing some printing (something xp would not let me do at the same time) the printing hung up and now when i try to run any scanner software, the scanner makes a noise, then i get the following fault the application kooka crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV) when i backtrace, i get (no debugging symbols found) Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.so.1". (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] [New Thread -1232886080 (LWP 18771)] (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) (no debugging symbols found) [KCrash handler] #7 0xb68a6cb0 in strcpy () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6 #8 0xb61f2c36 in sane_canon_pp_control_option () from /usr/lib/sane/libsane-canon_pp.so.1 i hope this is something i can fix as the scanner is quite useful to me. i have no idea how to remove the scanner from the list of scanners, i thought maybe that might help things if it has to reinstall the scanner thanks for any help offered, crundle :) always something i've done - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair....PEBKAC
  13. thanks for the help everyone, i have tried to get amule running, but it doesnt like the default server list, and when i try to put in any other, it doesnlt like them either, but i will print out the edonkey instructions and give that a try now. just found out about superkaramba and the weather forecast, love having that on the desktop! linux rocks, no doubt about it, I'm just slow to adapt from thinking in windows mode... the community atmosphere here is awesome, you people are a great credit to new linux users like myself crundle :)
  14. um, this is probably a stupid question, but how do i install edonkey after i have downloaded it? i have got the edonkey linux 1.1 tar.gz. i have tried doing tar -zxvf in the terminal, but what am i meant to do next? have tried googling for this to no effect, it seems that everyone should know what to do!! any help would be greatly appreciated as always, crundle btw, if there is something better out there that uses the edonkey network, dont be afraid to point it out...
  15. ok, I fixed it by blowing away my xorg.conf file and then running XFdrake. it built a new one for me and now i can see my monitor working. thanks for all the help with getting this going again, its appreciated. crundle
