  1. For me I always seem to head back to Java - it's a nice language, and does what I need to. I quite like the NetBeans IDE - version 5 is loads better than 4.1. Having said that, I also like the MS IDE's. Not had chance to play with Qt yet (I'm still new to Linux) but may will give it a test run one day. Thanks for all the feedback. Adrian
  2. Just a quickie about what programming languages/environments people use. I'm primarily a Windows programmer (because where I work is a Windows environment), but I've an interest in Linux and cross-platform development. I've nearly completed a project in Java, but wondered whether people here use C++, RealBasic or what? What compilers/IDE's do you use, and anything for cross-platform development? I'm talking mainly of desktop development, not web based, though feel free to comment if you want to. Thanks all, Adrian [moved from Terminal Shell Commands, etc by spinynorman]
  3. Has anyone used wxWdigets for cross-platform C++ development? If so, how did it go, and what compiler did you use? (I used the mingw one, for Windows, and a simple program consisting of just a frame ended up being 20Mb in size!!). For Basic, there is RealBasic, which is downloadable for free for Linux development. To do crosss-platform stuff, you'd need to pay for the Professional edition. I've used Java too - I quite like Netbeans 5. You get the JDK and IDE all in one download, and the layout thingy (Matisse) is great. I'm considering doing some cross-platform stuff, as I've only developed for Windows before now. Still trying to decide between Java, C++ (with wxWdigets) and C#. I've heard of Mono, but last time I checked there's been no development w.r.t. Windows forms. Hope it helps, Adrian
  4. Sorry, but I'm really new to wireless/Linux. I know some Netgear equipment works with Mandrake, and some don't (according to the Supported hardware on the web site), so which models do you have? It'll give me a better idea of what to get! Thanks again, Adrian
  5. What are the speeds like with 11b as opposed to 11g? Also, if I get an 11g kit, would I be able to make it 11b, or would I be better off getting 11b kit?
  6. Thanks for the replies, though I'm more confused now. I'll dig out that copy of Linux Magazine if I have it. I know Linksys was quoted but wondered what they (and the others) are like, and which is better. Thanks.
  7. Hello. I've installed Mandrake 10.1 Official (from Linux Magazine) and would like to create a wireless network. My current setup is: The main PC (which I'm using now) is dual-boot between Win XP and Mandrake 10.1 Second PC is Win XP only, though may install Mandrake 10.1 on there too! Wired network, and connect to internet is though main PC (ADSL modem). So, I'd like a wireless ADSL router, and either a PCI card, or USB adapter (preferably) for both PC's. Can anyone recommend products that will work with Mandrake 10.1 without much configuration? I'm new to Linux, and some threads on this board have confused me (though they're very informative). Many thanks, Adrian Johnson
