BOXED SET POWERPACK CD's

Ok

Here goes.

Having so much hassle with 9.1 I'd given up. Even expert text was still screwing up.

I tried 3 sperate and completely different machines and everything kept falling over.

Yesterday I got a magazine with disks 1-3.

The quality of the boxed set CD's is awfull. They aren't even round and judder about in the CD like a jet taking off. The edges are all rough.

Previous installations have failed to find packages or bombed out on seek errors on the CD (SCSI SENSE since its using IDE-SCSI).

I installed 2 computers with a basic 9.1 yesterday from the magazine CD's which are much better quality.

Now I have to update sources to get the powerpack stuff.

Anyway, obviously the installer is crap if it gets errors. I know lots of people have successful installs, how many from boxed sets? Various previous fall overs included writing partition table and various RMP's.

Has anyone else got crappy boxed set CD's (my 9.0 ones are nearly as bad). I ended up doing the download for those andwriting my own.

Anyway, this worked for me, obviously Mdk need some work on their installer, mainly its failed on RPM's I could live without but it still screws the whole process and leaves the installer in an endless loop eating CPU cycles. A little more attention on the boxed sets would be nice too.

Im in France in case anyone missed it so perhaps they rush out pre-press boxed sets of crap quality??? Maybe the ROPM's on the magazine included critical updates???

My 9.0 boxed set was flawless. The mandrakestore customer service was another story, so when iwent 9.1, i went with the CheapBytes CD's. I think it was 11.99 for CDR's (My CD burner is busted and i was in too much of a hury to dl on 56k)

my take on this whole deal is that MDK should not have changed over to a new installer setup on such a critical version of their product. They should have stuck with what worked (9.0 was good for practically everyone) and maybe changed in the future when they weren't trying to pull out of bankruptcy.

I used the download edition of 9.1 and had no problems, but like I've said many times, I seem to be one of the lucky ones.

I bought my FULL official one at FNAC in Paris.

The edges of all the CD's are rough. By 9.0 was a bit that way but not so bad (Official Boxed set) and my 8.2 and earlier was perfect, just like a commerical CD.

Who else bought the official boxed set, if so where (mail order (just joking your probably still waiting) or Store.

The ones I got yesterday were from A French Mag that specialises in distro's 5 euros. Wheras I piad the full retail price for the defective powerpack.

I pre-ordered the Powerpack edition of 9.1. It was delivered (within France) a few weeks ago and I have had no problems at all installing. All hardware was correctly detected and all my chosen packages installed without problem. I couldn't have been more impressed with how well the install went. I know some (maybe lots) of people have had problems with Mandrake Store, but this is the second time I have ordered from them and had no delays or faulty goods. BTW, the CDs themselves were perfectly circular :D

My experience is the opposite, mail order version 9.0 (the 3 disc standard ed) took for ever to arrive, but everything was recognised, except the scanner.

Since then, I now have the 9.1 powerpack dvd only, which again took for ever to arrive, when it did, bingo, everything installed/recognised INCLUDING the scanner.

Happy as "larry"!!!

regards

John

Yeah, its starting to look like either bad luck or the boxed sets shipped to stores (or certain stores) were inferior quality.

I tried them on several CD readers although to be honest they were all DVD readers in reality. The rough edges, roundness issue is still there though. They shake around when the Cd spins up and the edges are generally rough. I'll scan one and show you :-)

I bought both 9.0 and 9.1 at FNAC becuase I work next to a massive one (la Defense for the french inhabitants). I wonder if they do there own repro of the Cd's???

I don't like mail ordering becuase 9/10 the package gets retained at the PTT and I have to take time off work to collect it or it gets destroyed after 14 days if Im away.

I wanted the DVD powerpack but I don't have a DVD-R so I couldn't make a backup copy ...

I do not know how mandrake's customer service will respond to this problem. But, in every product produced anywhere, a certain percentage of the product will be inferior. Mandrake needs to know about your set, and they need to replace it. My concern is that, although they might even want to respond to this in a professional manner, they just simply fail in customer service. At any rate, tell them and put the ball in their court.

Your right its just I can't be bothered anymore.

Where do you report it for one. They have taken all the stuff away they profess to read.

Last time I sent a email to customer service who repsonded by saying I should go to mandrake expert.

Seriously, what are they going to do, recut the CD over the phone.

The whole purpose of buying was to support Mandrake but I really don't feel like they care anymore.

MandrakeStore Customer Service

gowator : 25:04 07:41 : Incident created

MandrakeSoft, its becoming more like M$Soft.  After using Mandrake for

years and purchasing several retail packs I'm at an end.

Firstly, the last release I bought was on poor quality CD's.  Every

installation on every machine failed because it couldn't read the CD's.

Not a single one but errors on everyone.  Free magazine CD's are better

quality!  Not only that but the NEW improved RPMDRAKE was broken by the

install which left me in an endless loop.  Noone wanted the new perl

one either, read the reports of the 9.0Beta2.  Having seperate ADD/REMOVE

just doesn't make sense.  Its such a shame, all the effort spent

indexing the CD's and everyone is forced back to a command line or KPackage.

Perhaps I could have been politer but I'd just trashed a partition table in the installer. (See Steve Scrimpshire thread on this).

So far as I can see they really don't seem to care nor want to replace the Cd's. I can hold out and wait ... or find an alternative source for the CD's. Given it was an act of philanthopy in the first place actually buying them in a store I just don;t see the point ...

Ahh... I maintain that if Mandrake is going to be successful, they must be a business! The fact that so many want them to succeed is a plus. But they seem to rely on that, rather than driving their business to a higher level. I suggest, if you have the time, to clearly state that the media is defective and needs to be replaced. In the US, there are consumer laws governing such things, and I suspect France has similar protections for the citizens. Telling Mandrake about this helps them to improve, if they handle it appropriately.

In the end they have lost my faith. I'm a big believer that things should work commerically and I'm starting to think they've lost it.

At the back of my mind I expect they'll just tell me to reurn it to the store!

Then the store will argue its opened... sooner or later my French will run out when I get frustrated and I'll have achieved nothing.

As it happened I bought this set from a different FNAC becuase it was a sunday and I was just dying to get 9.1 Its a real detour to go back tot he one on the Champs de Elisee just to be put in a retailer/vendor circle.

I agree with you I should and Manadrkae should wake up but I feel like I had enough effort. I beta tested 9.0rc2, along with almost everyone we complained about the new RPMDRAKE, their answer it was being rewitten in Perl so it was changing.... We all said it sucked but they didn't listen and that's the feeling they leave me with right now.

Its sad but Ive seen a lot of companies go under through not listening to their clients but ultimately I guess that why some well known support/developers are leaving....
