kristi
Mandriva 2005 fully updated a few days ago. I installed klamav with MCC software install. Install was quick and easy. I found the klamav icon in Menu, System, FileTools. It asked if it could update, I said yes. It didn't take too long. Clicked on the scan tab and since it was pointing at my /home/kristi/ I told it OK. Took about 5 minutes. (450MB) (A full system scan takes a long time). The scan found 4 things it didn't like and quaranteened them. I'll check them tomorrow. Very easy. This install apparently includes the Dazuko modules which check files on access. Clamav is apparently one of the best AV checkers around. [by comparrison, I spent hours and hours trying to get klamav to install on a debian based system. Never happened.] I do not know if an A/V is necessary. This simply proved that it could be done on Mandriva 2005 very easily. I would suspect that one would notice a 5% system load with an AV installed.
Red Knuckles
Did you get Klamav from the Klamav website? Or somewhere else? It isn't in my MCC in 2006. :o

michaelcole
I do not know if an A/V is necessary. This simply proved that it could be done on Mandriva 2005 very easily. I would suspect that one would notice a 5% system load with an AV installed. Some people say n o because they think there is no viruses for Linux, Sorry to say there is.. But further to that is being a good net citizen. We all download files share, send to others. The viruses can be found in these files then forwarded on to others that think it is clean. It is good to have protection, for your self in the future and for others who have the unfortunate inability to change over to Linux. I think it should be mandatory to have something on all computers, Not all are 100% effective but they will help stop the spread of most of the nastier viruses out there. Having something like tripwire is also a good idea. Which can see and check any file changes which you may not know is being done. Once you have tripwire and antivirus we should all use at least once a week to detect any changes and make any updates that are required. I also read the mails generated by the system each day to see if there is anything special I should know about.

Greg2
i installed tripwire from MCC, but i cant find it in the menus. where can i find it? It's not in the menus, it's a cli app. From the rpm description (available from mcc > software management): After installing this package, you should run "/etc/tripwire/twinstall.sh" to generate cryptographic keys, and "tripwire --init" to initialize the database.then in a terminal doman tripwire to read the manual, and set it up. Welcome to the board! :) and why did you post this in this thread?
