Is there a correct way of prounouncing the various linux filenames, commands such as etc, fstab ,fsck, usr? I can't imagine there is given linux is so international. Anyway here's some of mine:

etc - et cee or etcetera

fstab - f s tab (I know someone who always uses "fast tab" which started this whole thing)

fsck - f sack or f s check

usr - user (never heard different)

sbin - s bin

var - as in the first sylable of "variable"

mnt - mount

tmp - temp

I'm curious as to what others use.

Have no idea what is correct, but I have been using something different for three of those,

fstab = f stab (goes along with m tab)

fsck = f suck (5 letter variant of a similiar 4 letter word)

var = var (rymes with bar)

etc - e t c

fstab - f stab

fsck - never actually pronounced it...probably would just use fisk (fish with a k instead of h)

sbin - s b i n

mnt - mount

I pronounce chmod as 'CHEE mod' and chown as 'CHEE own' (dunno why). I know someone who pronounces chmod as 'commode'...lol

I have actually wondered about linux pronunciations too - but more along with prog names, though...

such as gedit... I call it gee edit, but I wonder if others call it ged it (with a hard g) or jed it.

I don't talk linux with anyone in person, so I've never actually heard linux words pronounced.

Hi there,

that's how I pronounce them, probably hugely incorrectly. ;)

etc - etcetera or e-t-c

fstab - f-s-tab, sometimes f-stab

usr - u-s-r (doesn't have anything to do with "user" AFAIK, at least I never associated it with "user")

sbin - s-bin

var - var, a as in "par"

mnt - mount

tmp - temp

initrd - init-r-d

etc - just 'et'

fstab - f s tab or sometimes just tryin to say itas 1 word, fssstab

fsck - fss-uck - one word

usr - user

sbin - s bin

var - like bar

mnt - mount

tmp - temp

What's *Really* frustrating is trying to help a noob on the phone

"Ok, browse to root, then usr --"

"im in root but theres no user"

"no no, not /root, i mean just plain /"

"oh ok, theres still no user"

"try u - s -r"

"oh k, yep."

What about vi?

v-eye

I believe usr used to stand for "Unix System Resources" and so has nothing to do with users.

etc - et c

fstab - f s tab (or sometimes f stab if I am feeling violent)

fsck - f s c k (sometimes, fs check)

mnt - mount

sbin - s bin

tmp - t m p

usr - u s r

var - var (rhyme with bar) - It really should rhyme with air, since it is various/variable, etc. But this is English, the language where spelling doesn't indicate pronunciation.
